Does Windows XP/Vista 64 bit editions work well with 32 bit applications? How about in terms of the processor (64 bit Dual Core) being compatible with a 32 bit Windows OS and its applications?

This is my results and it is very conclusive. The support for 32-bit application on Windows Vista x64 is superb (however, some may cause system hiccups). As for Windows XP x64 ... don't bother.
