Hello,

I'm doing an Information Technology Certificate through OTEN here in Australia and am having some issues that you might be able to help me with (they expect me to work weekends but there not open >_>).

I have an assignment that requires me to Install, Configure, Update etc an Windows XP Professional Operating System.

I don't have the Professional flavour of this Operating System, and the Windows XP Professional trial that they link to in the Assignment material is only the 64-Bit Edition of Windows XP Professional.

I could not find a 32-Bit version, though I have emailed Microsoft as well, just in case they do.

Now as far as I know, a 64-Bit Operating System (A Windows Operating System in particular) will not run with a 32-Bit cpu, is that right? As mine is not 64-Bit capable.

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Regards,
Chesso

You are correct a 64-bit OS will not work with a 32 Bit CPU, however, the dual core 2 processors do support 64-Bit, but I would double check on that just to make sure. Now as for 32-Bit Windows XP Professional, I believe this is the copy you might be looking for
. I double checked everything on that page and it makes no mention of it be 64-bit Operating system. Again the smart thing would be to look for a cheaper price and in that case I would check out amazon as I fould the lowest price for $145USD, and thats better then paying $286USD for.

So hopefully this helps you out Chesso.

Well buying it isn't much of an option.

I don't have any money lol, no job and it's only for an assignment (I have XP Home SP2 but they require professional).

They should be open today so I'm going to bug them on the phone for providing such a dumb link from material that is quite old and there is no way even a good minority would have 64-Bit CPU's when the material was written.

Thanks for the help!

Well, it seems like some illegal downloading is in store. If you go on one of those p2p websites and download the Windows XP, then chances are you will be downloading a non-genuine version of windows. I'm not sure if you will be able to install updates on that, because one of the updates will be the windows genuine advantage program, which will end up putting a pop-up on your screen that says your version of Windows is fake and that you should get a genuine one. That's always one option that you can use. It's up to your conscience to decide whether or not it's the morally sound thing to do.

Or you can just wait to hear back from M$. That's always a good bet.

etc. Windows XP only needs a personal serial typed in, to replace the OEM blacklisted one, and Microsoft can't tell the difference (over the internet, that is). But depending on the level of expertise, looking over your machine in person they might be able to. Even if they just ask you for proof of purchase. then you're stuck bigtime. How about borrowing the cd off of a friend?

I don't know many people with PC's, and the ones that do only have Windows XP Home edition like I do.

Microsoft were useless, and to add insult to injuyr it was "mohammad" or something that replied with a message that had almost absolutely nothing to do with my enquiry what so ever and took longer than 24 hours.....

It was about 5 sentences consisting of telling me to go bug the people who handle Microsoft products here in Australia bout purchasing decisions (I made no comment on any kind of purchasing or locally, and I specifically mentioned the TRIAL I was looking for, FOR STUDY), I think this guy needs to learn english again.

Although his reply in english was good, he clearly can't read it very well lol.

And even OTEN themselves are in a bind because all of their idiot employee's and teachers can't see what the problem is, apparently they don't have any understanding of CPU, 32-bit, 64-Bit and Operating Systems, heck the woman on the phone practically encouraged me to go and download it from anywhere I could (just not in so many words).......

And this isn't the first or most major floor in their course work I have pointed out and had them correct, and I'm being smashed and cottled on my work by (only female teachers) trying to tell me that a Library is not IT heavy enough for me to use for an assignment looking for insight into an IT business (libraries look pretty darn IT heavy to me....) and yet they can't understand what a CPU is........

Where on earth do these people learn to be teachers, and while I am ranting lol, how on earth do people get employed by Telstra when every single one I have spoken to (around 20+ different technical support people), can't even outmatch me in whits with there own job. Heck they went as far as calling me a liar the other night (upper management and several technical support officers), for about 2 hours until I pulled the undeniable, and most basic mathematics to prove them wrong and a simple screenshot to shut them up.

LMAO indeed, and people I know wonder why I get so cocky tongue.gif.

And now my rant is finished, it feels good, hope nobody minds lol.

first off Chesso ROCK ON!!! teach those noobs a lesson laugh.gif, second, just don't get caught, third after you finish all that work I would apply for a job there and start firing people when you get to upper management. Heck I would take her advice it don't take much to wipe a hard drive clean and start over.

Well yeah it is only for this assignment.

I have a spare partition ready for it, and they expect assignments basically weekly and I have been behind due to some work that I can't get done, either due to lack of their assistance or ability to answer questions (rather than give off answers that are pretty much not relevant what so ever to what I asked.....).

I have been under the assumption, that they had improved the work material since the last time I checked into it (when my missus was doing the Certificate under my current one, which she failed miserably even with my heavy assistance), and why?

Well they had assignments on things such as, business only printers made by Apple in 1986 that cost $1000+, that were discontinued in 1988. Mostly to do with it's installation (using serial ports, I haven't used a com port for a pinter in over 5 years and I'm technically new to computing) lol.

That and the fact that it was based on an Apple Mac computer (the printer only worked with Apple Mac as they apparently had somewhat different hardware to todays ordinary PC's), so it was impossible for her or me to do the work, and they couldn't let it off and expected it done anyway :S
