For Those Who Want A Message Board
Reviews and experiences on forum hosts. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By: Andy Lee Created: September 23, 2005 So you want to jump on the bandwagon and create a message board, eh? This is an article that details my hilarious adventures on forum hosts. Hopefully, this forum hosting guide will help you in your endeavors of running your very own forum-life of solitude. Disclaimer: Astahost is not responsible for your choices brought as a result of this guidance. Ezboard - Ezboard is a global online community host. Basically, you choose your own username and can use that username throughout the network. Ezboard is like a prostitute. A prostitute that leeches money off of you but never gives you what you paid for. The ezboard Staff doesn't care about you, the little people. You'd be best off avoiding it. http://www.ezboard.com InvisionBoard - InvisionBoard is great. InvisionBoard is reliable, fast, easy, you get your own server. Basically, nothing can go wrong with this host. Except for one thing. InvisionBoard demands many stacks of cash per month. If you're planning to keep your community intact on it long term, you have to be some rich, bourgeois guy that uses one dollar bills to wipe up with. On the bright side, there are some imitation InvisionBoard service you can go with. Have at that. I recommend InvisionFree. http://www.invisionboard.com http://www.invisionfree.com http://www.invisionboardforfree.com IkonBoard - Like many things, IkonBoard is generic. It's basically a regular paid message board host, just average I guess. One glamorous thing about it is your community gets a domain name. Watch out though, the Administrators can see your password, which makes it quite a fradulent thing, I guess. If you don't really want a community but rather a place to drill personal information at, sign up for IkonBoard. http://www.ikonboard.com PhpBB - Probably the best thing to go, long term. The price is affordable, you are guaranteed reliablility and stability. In fact, the largest message board in the world, GAIA Online [dot] com, uses this. You won't regret using this host. http://www.phpbb.com http://www.phpbbforfree.com With these experiences in mind, go out there and achieve your forum-life of solitude. You'll have something to look back at in your retirement home. |

ForumPlanet
License : Must run a GameSpy hosted site Site : http://www.forumplanet.com ForumPlanet is the fastest, reliable forum host I've ever seen. Because it's GameSpy owned and GameSpy operated, ForumPlanet is guaranteed to stay for years to come. The requirement is you have to have a GameSpy operated site in order to receive their services. And because GameSpy is a multi-million dollar company (or in other words, the largest videogame review site in the world), you probably aren't guaranteed such forum hosting. Proboards
http://www.proboards.com Fast and reliable, I highly recommend proboards. They do have adverts which you can pay to have removed, but if you don't they don't ruin the look of your message boards, like the adverts on ezboard do. (You didn't mention that PHPbb and other message board systems can be installed on your asta hosting account) |

Well, I like MyTopix from Jaia Interactive. The latest build was released in January, but that's because the developer has decided to jsut add a million features and fix every bug possible before releasing the next build. It's really nice, and doesn't have bloat like some forum systems.

phpBB is free open source and also available here as as astahost user.
It is also the forum used by the PHP-Nuke CMS which is also free, of course if you only go to sites that give you a little package then suit yourself. I have been using forums since 1999 with Mercury Board and Invision (when it was free until September of 2004) and phpBB, PUNbb, Yabb, YabbSE (now SMF), and more. |
