I was just wondering what your opinion is on a project I want to take on. It's called www.oboists.co.uk and will be a community for players of the oboe to get together and exchange information and opinions on the most beautiful instrument in the world.
I was browsing the web for websites about the Oboe, and they are incredibly bare. The ones that exist are dreadfully designed, many of which are on angelfire, and none of which have a lively community for Oboists to discuss reed making techniques and the Oboe instrument in general. Would it be suicidal to embark on a project to promote the oboe, since there has to be a reason for there to be so few in the first place? |

Well you shouldn't let the figures bog you down - you probably have no idea how many are there all around the world. If you can indeed come up with a really good feature rich site - you'll be getting mass visits from every corner of the world !! Even though I'm not much of a musician from any angle, I'd say it's definitely worth a try.. for things that you really love, always try and pursue till the end...don't stop in between even if you don't get good response. For any kind of site, it takes a lot of hard work and primarily patience - till you start getting a decent crowd or see a fair degree of success
All the best |

Go for it! And when it's up, I'll be happy to swap links with you from my harp page on CountryNaturals.com. (My harp page is empty right now, but it should be ready when you are.)
Good luck. Suz |

I think the fact that there are very little sites on oboe, and none of them are good, that is PRECISELY why you should set up your own site, and make it really good, so it'll be the benchmark. I don't know how many really content and community-rich sites I've seen, introducing themselves as the first really good site for this particular genre, because at that time all the other sites were crap.
Go for it! I think it'll be better than if you were making a site where there are already a lot of good sites on the subject. I think the reason for why there aren't so many sites out there in the first place would be, 1. Very little other oboe players have the passion and the drive to set up a good webpage, or maybe they're just not well-equipped enough to make a webpage. 2. There hasn't been a benchmark good site yet, and they're all thinking like you right now. My advice would still be to go for it. I think with your kind of enthusiasm and idea for the site, it'll turn out good. |

I say If you want to achieve something you must go for it. You try hard and good stuff will go to you. Anyway Im a musician too, so I think that it's good idea to make an community for specific people (like Oboa players) anyway because if there is no quality sites for oboa players on internet - that is your chance for sucess...

well, i don't know why oboe players would want to talk about teh electric guitar, besides that it is the moet beautiful instrument in the world...
no, serious, you should do it. it will take lots of time, but you are no noob, so it will be a good website. than you only need advertising (hard part!) and if you have established the biggest oboe-community you will be soooo proud! it also is a good site for google ads or similar, because they will be about buying oboe (parts) which makes your visitors click on it and make you money!! conclusion: do it! |

Yes I think website solely for oboeists would be a great idea. It would also be cool to put alot of information on the site to entice beginner musicians to start playing the oboe, as it seems not enough young musicians see the oboe as a good choice. I think you should also have sound clips and stuff like that. A fun and informative site on the oboe would be great! Good luck!

Maybe you could try a huge forum, with any instrument available, I think that would be better, but if you want oboe, go for it.
