well last year i was downloading vector linux and gave up on it cos i only had dial-up. but i remembered about it a while ago and the new version looks so cool! i wanted to know if anyone out there has used it before and tell me what its like! i might download it tomorrow. ill probably get the SOHO (small office/home office) edition, it has a better design!
they are currently in version 5.8. so basically, anyone used it before? whats your opinion and should i try and install it on my old hard drive and get rid of centOS? my old hard drive is picky, all i can get to install is centos and kubuntu, thats why i got a new one, not even windows will install on it since i got a virus in the boot sector (i formatted the drive at least 10 times)

I tried Vector Linux during the time when I tried many Linux distributions. After searching a bit, Vector Linux isn't really good. Especially since there aren't a lot of precompiled packages for it. You'd have to compile a lot of your own software. That's why I stuck on to SuSE Linux most of the time.

I just installed Vector Linux last night and am using it right now. I downloaded and installed the newest standard version. So what do I think? Well, the installer was text based, but fairly easy to use and also very fast. It took only about 10 minutes to install. It installed faster than all the other distros I've tried so far. It installs the Lilo boot loader which I do not like as much as Grub, however, this is a minor issue to me.

Though initial boot up was about average, this is by far the fastest linux distro I've used (except maybe for damn small linux). My experiences with installing packages in Vector Linux have confirmed what I had already believed. That is that despite the help of advanced packaging tools like slapt-get and gslapt, dependency issues are much more of a problem than what one would be used to using a debian or rpm based distro. Adding extra repos like the one available from http://slacky.eu helps a little bit. Still there are far less packages available for Vector Linux than there are for other more popular distros. I do somewhat like it, however, I'm not so sure I'm going to stick with it. Though I'm capable, I'm just simply not committed enough to deal with all of the dependencies issues I've been having with this. I think I'll stick with Fedora or Debian.
