i downlaoded the ubuntu install cd the other day and tried to burn the image to cd using nero. i was using a cd-rw and i both finalise and didnt finalise and both times the cd was not booted from and when i looked at the contents xp just crashed. what happened - any ideas.

also i has a broken gentoo/98 dual boot with grub on the 3rd partition. i reformated the 3rd partition forgetting about grub becasue unbuntu is going on (networkless) and now grub is messed up. can i reinstall grub off the gentoo install cd? if so what base commands do i need.

thanks very much in advance

blink.gif What is ubuntu ? is it a free linux ?
If tye CD does not boot on your system, that probably means that your hardware is not known from the linux on the CD. Then, have a look at the ubuntu web site and look if there is a boot floppy disk.
However, the fact that you cannot read the CD from Windows seems to indicate that your burner is not able to burn any cd, just test that with some other files.
I usually use Mandrake, and when I break the Lilo booting part, I simply boot on the Mandrake CD and it automatically starts the Lilo reinstall program and everything works fine again.

1) Did you corrctly burnn the CD ? Dont burn the iso as a data CD, burn it using the special option (Burn ISO cd image)

2) Is your BIOS set to boot from the CD? see your mmotherboard manual on how to set bios to boot different disks.

you can re-install grub by booting linux (off a cd, or on an installed linux partiton) logging in as root, and entering the command

CODE

grub-install --root-directory=/ /dev/hdX

where hdX is the disk that you want to install grub to, and assuming the boot folder is /boot (and if on a spererate parttion, boot IS mounted)

hda = primary master
hdb = primary slave
hdc = secondry master
hdd = secondry slave.

eeeeeeeasy.

@xboxrulz : he cannot create a bootable CD, so he will probably not be able to boot from the UBCD...

I just re-read, that seems to be the problem, try reinstalling NERO.

Befor re-installing Nero, I would suggest make a test : create a bootable CD using a bootable ms-dos floppy disk, and check that this CD under dos.

thanks for all the advise. here is an update on what happened.

strangely enough after the two cd-rw's that didnt work using nero, i used nero express instead and used cd-r's and they worked fine so there is a bit of a mystery for someone.

the grub issue has gone too. the Ubuntu installer bulldosed through all problems and now has installed a great os on my p3 which is very nice and so easy. Linux in 2hours with only the install cd and knoppix for qtparted to avoid file loss - very impressed

thanks

This probably means that your CD reader has problems reading CR-RW. Some old hardwares have problems reading CD-RW, or booting from CD-RW. You are right, the symptoms are that everyting is fine (but more costly) with CD-R.
So, congrititulations, you solved everyghing by yourself. Have a good time with that perfect OS.
