What i fail to uinderstand why would they do such a thing ..other than Ubuntu (for humanity)

its not like that thye would be breaking the monoply of Red Hat or Mandrake on Desktop..but do you think they can make money out of it . I mean think of it..people would love Ubuntu cause tehy send free CDs. The day they stop offering free CDs they are as good as Fedora and OpenSuSe.

There were rumors that Google might actually use Ubuntu as its Desktop OS . They are already using it internally.

They do not want to get any profit out of of sending free Cd's, people just gets the Cd's a lot of which in my opinion are used not for installation purposes, but even though 1 out of 50 Cd's become a new Linux user is great, I got my free Cd's too, I gave some of them to my friends, and say because of me and their free Cd's we have another 4 persons who are using Linux.

As I understand, Ubuntu is sponsored by private persons, who have their own stuff, they gave the money because they have a lot of them and wanted to do something "good" programmers are paid, Cd's are shipped and stuff.. maybe I told it that it is so easy, but..

yeah, they have been doing this for ages. its not just a crazy one off thing.

Personally, i dont understand al the ubuntu hype, but i usually get a cd or 2 delivered when they release a major new version, just to see whats happening in the non Gentoo world.

BTW, you've to use the Advanced Search option - I searched for the word Ubuntu ONLY in the topic title and NOT message body.. hence I got only about 6-7 hits. That's how I found it.

In some interview with one of the head guys for Ubuntu, they said the cd shipments are actually their biggest cost currently. The main reason they do it is to make linux accessible to everyone, not just those with broadband who will be able to download the iso files and updates. With the cd at least they can have a base linux experience even on dialup without having to pay for it. They're really big on not paying for linux, so they don't want to charge for any version of it like most of the others do.

D00d who runs the company is a bazillionaire anyways, he can handle it haha. I've never bothered ordering some cds from them but I think I might. I've been running ubuntu at home lately as one of my OS's and I use it here at work so may as well have an official copy of the disks since, as I think someone mentioned, they are free

well, there's many other places that ship Ubuntu for free.

I think it really is very nice of Ubuntu to ship CDs for free anywhere in the world, but many people abuse it. Lots of people I know ordered these CDs just because they were offered for free even though none of them even use Linux. Maybe they should try to spend a bit towards telling people about the advantages of Linux rather than spending lots of money to ship free CDs. It's not that they ship one CD per registration or anything ... they'll even ship 20CDs if you ask them!

I never bothered to order because I'm not particularly fond of Debian in any way. Although, I will say, the root thingy in Ubuntu is quite annoying.

Well the thing is ...its based on Debian ..but its very differnt. It has a really good bundle ..with easy setup of things like USB devices and installatin..the shipped version comes with a live cd. I think you should give it a try.

And wats so annoying about not logging as root. Its the best security policy. You should do every thinng as sudo. Even in my gentoo KDE i am not allowed to login as root. I presume this will be tru for any major distor using latest desktops like KDE 3.4+ or Gnome (2.6?)

I did try out with a liveCD I borrowed from my friend. It was pretty good, in the sense that, without any configuration it detected my network card, dhcp, sound and everything. Pretty neat. I don't mean to say it's bad, it's just that I like to play around quite a bit with Linux and felt that Ubuntu just doesnt' give me enough freedom to do that . Hard to explain that.



Gentoo without root?!! I dont' think so. I've been using Gentoo for the past 4-5 months and of course it has root. I don't mean logging into a Desktop Environment or Window Manager as root. Even if that's possible it's not advisable at all. Sometimes, when you've got to perform a lot of things in the console as root, it's quite convenient to not have to type 'sudo <command' all the time. Besides, if sudo is allowed, anyone will be able to do anything to my system at any time. Also, it will be even more irritiating if sudo has password enabled and you have to enter the password for every 'sudo' command you enter.

Of course, some people prefer it that way, but I prefer the regular way of having a root shell login to perform adminstrative tasks. I guess in the end it just boils down to what you're used to. I know a couple of guys who stand by Ubuntu no matter what. But after using Gentoo, I won't be using anything else in a hurry .
