We live in a world where everything you want, you pay it for. Open source is an idea of distributing software free of charge, that is, you can pay for support if you like, but the application is free in most cases. With that said, there is a list of the 46 best EVER freeware programs, I have used many of this(microsoft anti-spyware, FireFox, EditPadLite). Seriously I know many people like to pay for software, others steal it, but try out the freeware programs, there are a lot that are Top Quality Applications, you'll love them.

The first 46 programs are on the website, but to get to know the programs 47-48 you have got to subscribe to their monthly newsletter. That's a bit strange.

Yeah, I see what you mean... you'd think it would be the other way around - you want to see the Top 46 list, you should have to subscribe. Oh well... poor marketing, I suppose.

Either way, they aren't lying on the "best freeware ever" part - really good stuff they're showcasing.

I wonder if one would have to pay to have their freeware posted, or perhaps they could bribe for a higher position. Or, maybe, for the the sake of the article, it's simply a gratuitous matter to get your link posted on the site. Who knows... and I just realized - who cares?!

You know what they need to make freeware... calculators... as if those aren't already freeware to begin with.

Yeeeees ... ... that's the point! Deep down in my heart I can feel exactly what you're talking about!

Even if a freeware program is better than a commercial program, where's the fun? The triumphant feeling you get when you read "Thank you for choosing Pagemaker" after you've entered the serial that your keygen generated for you. The more complicated the activation routine, the better the feeling you get when the whole thing is installed. But with freeware .. NO FUN!

Well, it's very good to know the both of you deal in Warez, a "civil wrong". While I don't approve, it is and can only be a "civil wrong", and nothing more.

Talking about silver spoons, the last thing taht I licked from the silver spoon was "Hummingbird Exceed PowerSuite 2006", if I lick it from the golden spoon it costs me 745 US-$, so I really do prefer the silver spoon.

I think ALL software should be free for private use. Some companies do so and give away their software for free for private use only, and still take money for professional/commercial use. Sun Solaris for example or Oracle Database software or Ragtime DTP program.

If NOONE on this planet would use pirate software on his desktop, the power of companies like Microsoft or Macromedia would be much smaller. Their power lives through the high number of illegal installations. That's why they don't really act against private MS Office installations for example. In other words, even if I install cracked software, the software companies still earn money through me.

I completely understand where you're coming from, but you also cannot deny the downsides of piracy and the ramifications of such.

That, plus the fact that piracy is illegal; at least, from a civil standpoint. the fact of the matter is that piracy could not become anymore illegal than it is now. Still, one would have to look at their own conscience for what they believe to be correct, then go from there.

In any case, I couldn't pirate worth, well, *bleep*. I suppose it's a good thing, 'cause, chances are, if I knew HOW to pirate, I wouldn't be surprised if I WOULD pirate... then again I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't either - !

But - hey, whatever floats your boat...

Yes, sure everybody has got to do what his consience tells him. In case of unlicensed software I have absolutely NO consience of doing something criminal. I don't have the feeling that I'm taking away anythig fron anyone. If I steal an old lady's purse, I sure would feel like a robber, like a thief. Bit in this case I absolutely don't. In using this software I do increase the power of the software company, so in a way I could say I work for them, I am kind of an embassador for them. With every Microsoft Word document I sent away as an email-attachment, I spread the power and the profit for Microsoft. So to be perfectly honest, I think that they should pay me money for using their software!

I LOVE freeware! If nothing else, it gives me a good idea of how the program is essentially supposed to work. And then, if I hate that company's freeware, I can go out and look for another company's non-freeware. Or something.

I also love guiltware. it's not common, but the concept is pretty sweet: tell users that it's free to use as long as they want, but if they feel guilty about not paying for their programs, they can make a donation (any amount that they want) to a charity.

There was one non-Windows version of Notepad years and years ago that was guiltware. Naturally, I've upgraded to newer computers (and have had quite a few total system crashes) since then ... that was like eight years ago. I can't remember the name of it, but it was a really sweet, stable, easy to use Notepad type application. I wish I could remember what it was called so I could go look for it.

Very cool link! I've got several of the programs installed and in use. Others I've tried, used, and simply left them behind. The thing about registering to view the last 30~ or whatever is a bit .. odd. Heh, oh well. Top 46 is good enough for me.

well I always been a great supporter of freeware software to the extent that I always find a freeware replacement for a commcerical one I am already using .

but so far nothing can replace these :

3DS Max 7.5
Autocad 2006

seriously , I've tried everything else ... yes they might be GOOD but not even close , and plz dont even start recommending that GIMP thing , It's very good indeed , but I would replace MS paint with it not my Paint Shop .

Same idea for MAX , there's dozens of freeware modelers out there , yet none of them is even 1/10000 close to max

CAD software .. the standard since I was born ,.. Autocad !

Which one does not install ? And, by the way, are you using vista ? Are you really administrator ?
