Personally I prefer one of the free anti-viruses. They are usually less bloated and I trust them a lot more.

I would go McAfee over Norton. Norton is WAY too bloated. It's more like a brick than it is useful.

Anti-viruses are becoming more and more resource intensive, Norton Antivirus being the most hungry one. Its not feasable to use it on systems like mine (Intel P4 3.0 HT, 1 GB RAM). The slowdowns were so annoying that I decided not to keep any of them (Anti-viruses). I do install any of the evaluation versions from various vendors, once in a while and do a full system scan; after which they go back to the bin.

McAfee is one of the most lightweight products out there. My personal favorite happens to be Panda Antivirus which uses various kinds of herustic scans to detect even the newest of viruses. Also, its much lighter than Norton.

It is possible that I am insane but, I do not keep any anti virus constantly running on my PC. In my experience they tend to use more overhead than I am willing to give up. Particularly on the low end machine I am currently using.

Thing is I have never had a virus problem in my many years of computing. This may well be because I am bright enough to avoid the most common ways of getting them in the first place. I think actively running programs of that sort are mostly useful to those who do not know better than to do things like click the pop up that claims you have a virus and need to click it's links to fix it, ironically causing tons of trouble. Using web mail helps as well given I never actually download my mail or any attachments.

None the less I need to install a new active anti-Virus on my fathers PC as he tends to NOT avoid doing things to get his PC infected. In his defense he is 66 years old.

If I have to choose between Norton and McAfee, then I'd definately go for McAffee, Norton still slows down your system too much and it's just too big.
If I can choose another one, I'd go for Avast, been using it for a long time and I'm happy about it :) .

I use both Norton and Mc Afee, and I frankly prefer Mc Afee.
Mc afee works fine with Ad-Aware 2007 free anti-spyware. Ad-aware 2008 refuses installation when McAfee is present.
And McAfee SiteAdvisor is nice, when it finds a not-tested-yet site, it asks you if you want it to test if for you, and then it tells you if you can trust the site or not.
And, yes, exactly like wutske, I hate the way Norton unattendly starts scanning your hard disk at boot, you have to wait until it finishes it makes me get angry.

Unlike other members of the forum, I highly recommend you constantly running an antivirus software to make sure that your system doesn't get infected. If you have a lightweight system, it shouldn't eat a lot of resources causing a substantial drag to your system.

I agree with this. Even if you don't see it, a correctly running antivirus is protecting your computer, sometimes it destroys some attacks even without letting you know it. I have seen file simply disappearing during unzip operations, because the binaries were infected an automatically removed by the antivirus.
The best antivirus is sometimes not enough for preventing an infection, but it's absolutely necessary for the commont known risks.

I prefer norton over mcafee just because Im please with the use of norton 360. It provides everything that needs to protect my system from viruses and my browsing transaction needs. It also offers your a online backup storage account with I believe 20gb or 2gb of data that you can store in case your system bites the dust. Norton 360 also does not use alot of your computer resources when running in the background like its older software. This software actually does everything that you usually would do for your computer manually in one simple click. For example, it cleans or temporary history, and optimizes your hard drive space, update its virus definitions, and scans your computer of prone viruses that are lurking around in the internet today. It also is very simple to use even a baby can probably be able to run the maintenance control on your computer for you. They definitely simplified the user interface and added a lot of useful tools to help the user protect their system and sustain its privacy. You would definitely not be disappointed if you were to use norton 360.

I have had both norton and mcafee and they are with no dout in my mind the best anti virus systems on the market, the only soul little reason that keeps me from finding them as equal is that mcafee needs to restart the computer way more often and norton has more options as far as turning stuff on and off and function options.

I had mcafee on but it stopped updating because i had to pay for it :/, not a fan of payingxD. After that my computer started getting slower and slower. Adds starting popping out of no where (addware/spyware) and my Rams started decreasing(viruses), my power management was affected even. Anyways i formatted, added rams, fixed power and reinstalled Mcaffee and i can update for a while until i get that you need to pay to update again thing. Then it'd start over:D

So basicly if you keep updating Mcafe your computer will remain safe=)

I have been using Norton Security. I have been using Norton Security for a few years now, because that was installed when I was in college classes. I was able to get a good deal with my subscription through an education plan. When I was working on other students' computers, I would probably put AVG Antivirus on their computers because I was able to customize it and, oh yeah, it was free.

I was running Norton Security on my Acer laptop, but the subscription has run out. So it is just running updates, and I am really not doing much else. I will probably just load AVG again on this laptop... But I do a lot of reformatting, and then I find a deal on new antivirus subscriptions. That, and I have an old version of like Norton 2003 that I keep installing, and it is good for like a year or so.

I have used McAfee when it used to run on my PCs, but I don't right now. I just don't have it on any PCs, only what was defaulted, which was Norton. I guess it is not as vast as Norton Security, but it still does its' job well. If it were already installed, it would be in use.

So go with the free subscriptions, and then when they run out, either shell out a years worth of money, or go get free AVG, and there are others out there, but don't know how reliable.

I think Norton Internet Securety is a good Antivir programm.
I use it for 2 years and i never had a crash because of a virus, the virus search is very fast and it doesn't slow down your pc.
I have Norton IS 2008

Never tried mcafee but i currently have Norton Internet Security which is great. I guess everyone has a different opinion, they lean towards many things such: how simple it is to use, features, cost, system use etc. It's your choice.

Mcafee has to be the best because, norton takes "control" of your computer so you can't do what you want.. And I get Mcafee free with my cable service..

Norton Antivirus ProblemNorton Or Mcafee?

I have been using Norton 360. A couple of weeks ago it did a live update that stopped my antivirus from working. I contacted Norton because I couldn't unistall it. Norton said to use the removal tool, but that didn't work. I contacted Norton chat support where they accessed my computer remotely and tried to use the removal tool to unistall Norton. That didn't work. They tried deleting files and while they did this they lost my internet connection. Norton said I had to ring my ISP because it was a problem with them. I told them it wasn't a problem with my ISP, since I have two computers hook up to the same modem and the other computer works fine. Anyway they said they could not help me until I contacted my ISP. I contacted my ISP and they checked my line and said there was  nothing wrong with it. (what a surprise!) Contacted Norton and told them my internet connection was fine. I had to do a system restore just to get my internet connection back. Norton now were asking if I had installed any other programs or done anything to my computer because the problem is with my computer. I told them my computer was fine until the live update error. They accessed my computer to use the removal tool again. I said to them how many times are you going to do the same thing, it obviously doesn't work. They left me with a frozen computer, no help, no support, no nothing. So I sent Norton an email letting them know I was not happy with what they had done to my computer and their reply was you can contact Norton chat support. A week after Norton rang my mobile at 12:30 in the morning with someone on the other end I could barely understand. The next day I received an email asking me to reply to a customer survey asking if I liked their support. What a joke!! So basically I now have a computer that I can't go online with and I can't unistall Norton. I will never use Norton again.

Did you try a system restore to a point before the live update, and then use the removal tool ?

McAfee the bestNorton Or Mcafee?

I am using McAfee since 10 years. Although I allowed a virus inside my computere I called up Norton and was really frustrated about Mcafee. But norton couldnt help me. I again contacted the macfee, to my goodness I got my virus removed remotely by a technican from another department where I paid only $90. They done  a good job. But norton told me that I may lose some files ifthey do that. Hats off to MacAfee. But thisis the first time I'm infected with a virus with MacAfee installed. The time taken is just 30mins to remove virus by the technician, also explained about the way the virus got in throgh the conversaction.

Macafe is best
