AstaHost Free Web Hosting, No Ads does not offer SSH account. However, ComputingHost paid account provides SSH.

The "typo" will be fixed shortly. I apologize for the out-dated information and introduction. In the past (before there were only two hosting plans) the original 4 hosting plans included SSH. However, due to account security, the offer was removed.

I badly needed that also.. but for the security of the whole userbase, i guess a lost of that will be ok.. @NoMore Do you really need SSH? I may find a host for you that have that one.. Please Private message your answer for this one.. we are not allowed to talk about other host on the forum board... the way i remember it.. [for the free one] thanks.. |

we are not allowed to talk about other host on the forum board... the way i remember it.. [for the free one] I'd like to clarify that "advertising" another hosting company in this forum is strictly prohibited--both free or paid. This would be like biting the hand that feeds you...if you will However, you can give review(s) of another hosting service(s). And you can do this without advertising. I will not go any further since I know we are all intelligent enough to figure out the way. |

I knwo this is slightly off topic, but why would paid hosting companies offer SSH access. Not only is it possible to look at data that is not in the root folder for the account but their are methods of gaining root access through SSH. Hopefully xisto was able to manually tweak teh kernel but some managements really don't do this. Well maybe im a dinosaur since i haven't manage a linux - cPanel server for a year or so, but still.

WRONG
you cant look at data that only root can, the Shell limits you to your own folders you can get to the folder but have no premisions there is a Limit Shell for SSH2 users if its installed on the server and hosting my somtimes offer a Shell Access, all you have to do is ask for it (and add some $$) NoMore |

Hopefully xisto was able to manually tweak teh kernel but some managements really don't do this. Well maybe im a dinosaur since i haven't manage a linux - cPanel server for a year or so, but still. it depends on the access level of the SSH login.. if your folder in the server is read global then you are in trouble.. some admins sets all folders that are system wide into read global but that is wrong.. some admins sets the SSH user to read all and that is a big nono.. using such access level will enable all users to read each others data.. ********* why do we need SSH.. will to make a simple example of it.. sending files.. SSH file uploads are encrypted.. if you are in an FTP upload, chances are someone can hijack your file access.. i think we dont want that to happen.. we can also create patch servers or patch clients or even remoting of our servers.. using SSH.. it depends on your imagination.. i myself have been relying on the SSH technology much more than the FTP and Cpanel.. whatever your reason for SSH use.. it drops down to encryption.. |
