so i thought i would work on this tonight and transform my Windows 7 into a metro looking Windows 8 RTM :)

I hate to admit but it kinda looks appealing to me, nice, neat and simple - especially with the task-bar being available

Ok so i notice how boring it is using Windows Desktop and i'm wondering if there's any tweaks or tools out there (preferably free) that will allow me to have wobbly/snap window effects and some of those eye-candy stuff Compiz or most linux have available

cheers

so i'm starting to like the feel and look of Windows Media Player... only problem, it can't play most file formats like VLC

so i'm wondering if anyone know of a codec pack that works perfectly fine with Windows Media Player 12? so i would be able to play formats like .mkv and other non-supported ones on WMP

cheers

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how to quickly set desktop wallpapers on Win 7 to be separate on each screen, i know there are third-party apps that can handle this but i'd rather let windows do so if it does have the feature

I do a lot of Windows Installations on friends and relatives machines, even my own setup gets re-installations every now and then... so i figured i would create some Windows ISOs that already have latest service packs, updates, patches

Any recommendations on tools for this purpose? Mainly just to add updates/sp onto my original Windows 7/XP ISO/DVD

I have played around with nlite before but that was sometime ago, just wanna see what you guys use or have in mind

cheers

For about more than a year, I have been trying to shift from windows ecosystem to linux ecosystem. I have made three or four attempts but for one reason or the other, I have had to go back to windows. The main issues that forced me to go back to windows included inability to effeciently use the UI, huge issues with multi-monitor setup, inability to properly use the terminal, and so many more.

During this period, I have tried a number of linux distros to see which one suits me best. I started with ubuntu 11.10, but I left it because it had serious issues with multi-monitor support that I use alot. I also had issues with playing multimedia content on it which appeared to be very laggy, especially when playing high resolution movies. Then I tried openSuse (KDE), which for some reason was very very slow. Then fedora, the interface of which didn't suit me and I left it because I wasted most of my time in navigation. Then I tried linux mint, lubuntu, xubuntu but couldn't stick to them as well. And finally I tried the openSuse(genome) where I always missed a dock from where I can quickly open my applications.

Finally I gave a try to ubuntu 12.04, which gave me a great first impression but somehow I managed to crash it to the point that I got frustrated and returned back to the Windows 7.

But this time I gave ubuntu 12.04 another try and now I am more than satisfied with it. I have not repeated the mistakes I made previously and the system is stable and fluent and I am happy with it. The multi-monitor support is awesome (I have ATI video card) and I am very impressed. There is one single little glitch, that I will discuss later, but other than that I am very impressed by how it handles two displays.

Under this topic I will try to describe the difficulties I am having while using the ubuntu 12.04, based on my background in windows operating systems and hopefully, I may help other people to decide whether transition to linux is good for them or not.

As we know, Microsoft has released the consumer preview of its newest OS under development -- Windows 8. Since this OS is not like those previous versions of Windows, some people, including me, think that this OS is going to be something good and refreshing while some others say that they'll be just sticking to Windows 7.

I haven't installed the consumer preview on my computer since I don't want installing previews on it. But, I have seen some videos about its new features and user interface. For me, its tiles-based UI is one of its good points. That way, things such as the weather and mails can be easily checked and some applications can be easily accessed. Uninstalling the programs (on tiles) can be easily done by just simply right clicking the tile and choosing the uninstall option at the bottom. That saves some time. ;)

The 'snap multitasking' can also help me since mostly, I run more than one programs at the same time. Searching and sharing can also be navigated by just clicking the upper right corner of the screen. Another thing that I liked is the Windows Store. At first, when I heard this, I thought "Is Microsoft trying to imitate Apple's Mac App Store? " But... I don't really care about that now. Actually, I'm looking forward to this Windows Store. ^_^

These are the system requirements:

QUOTE

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster

RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device or higher

To use touch, you need a tablet or monitor that supports multitouch

To access Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768

To snap apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1366 x 768

Before, I thought that Windows 8 would have higher system requirements than Windows 7.
That's some things I like about Windows 8 so when the stable release comes out, I'll probably switch to it. :D What about you guys? Have you installed either the developer or consumer preview? Did you like it? Would you stick to the previous Windows versions or upgrade to Windows 8 when it comes out?

It's been out for a week now, and has already recorded more than a million downloads. Windows 8, the next version of Microsoft's Windows, is available as a consumer preview, or in other words, as a beta release. It can be downloaded from here free of cost. This is not a new move at all. Windows 7 was released to the public in two different flavours as well; first as a Beta version and then a Release Candidate version. In case of Windows 8, the pre-beta (developer) version itself was made public, and now the Beta version has come out. I'm not sure if there will be an RC version or if the retail version will be out directly.

Talking about the Consumer Preview version, it has surely come a long way from the Developer Preview version. The immediate difference is the GUI. The Metro interface has been made smoother and more visually-appealing to the eyes. More importantly, the background colour of the interface can now be changed at will. The DP version had a constant green colour in the background. Also, the setup process has been tweaked a bit, so that towards the end, the user has a whole-new setup screen, which once again, is visually appealing.

Other changes include the inclusion of the Microsoft Store, where Metro apps can be downloaded. At the moment all the apps in this store are free of cost. The pre-loaded apps have also changed, with Pinball and Solitaire being the sole games (the DP version had more pre-loaded games), and social apps taking up much of the screen.

Another change is the floating bar on the right of the Desktop which appears when the mouse cursor is taken to the right edge of the screen. The bar contains options to share the content on the screen, the "start" button (which takes the user back to the Metro screen) and an options button.

In Windows explorer, the ribbon interface has been modified as well. The interface in the Developer version looked quite ugly, and it has been tweaked in this version.

So far the performance of the new OS is decent, and the Metro apps are interesting to play with. The whole OS gives a loud statement that it is meant for touch-enabled devices, but it installed well enough on my 2-year old netbook. It looks like Microsoft has another bestseller on its hands, although not everyone will look kindly upon the forced change to the Metro interface, and especially upon the removal of the start button!

I have a number of email accounts with different hosts. Most of the time, it gets very difficult to manage all these accounts and as a result, some of them get neglected. To solve this issue, I decided to go for an email client that can handle multiple accounts for me simultaneously and that can make some sound when a new email arrives (basic stuff I guess).
I have heard lot about outlook but I wanted something lighter and simpler. So I went for windows live mail. The program looked good in the beginning. It had good features and setting up accounts was simple too. I was quite happy with it but after using it for a few days, I began to note some flaws. Some of them were really annoying. For example, in the "unread emails" the messages from some of my email accounts appeared twice. While the same message when seen under the specific email, appeared only once. This was quite annoying. Another thing was that the software didn't download messages. It did download the titles and subject but I had to wait for a few seconds before I could see the entire message after clicking on the message. This was also quite annoying for me. Third thing which I didn't like was it showed lot of errors. And the errors would interrupt anything I was doing at that time.

As a result, I have now decided to look for some other program. I have installed inbox2. The interface is quite nice and the setting up accounts is very simple too. In fact it is much simpler than than what windows live mail had to offer. The other problem, that is downloading entire message also seems to be solved in this application. The start is very good but I will be able to tell more about this program only after I use it for a few days. Hope it provides what I need from it.

As you know widnows 8 preview or should i say, developer preview is out. For those who are into development. I think they are going to like one news that .NET is here to stay. I am feeling good about this because i don't have to move my stuff to linux for that. They also added HTML, JS and stuff for the metro UI. Okay before talking about the user interface stuff let me tell you that you can download the OS from the MSDN site. You can search for that in the bing. I got the torrent link and frm there i downloaded. There is nothing different in either web download or the torrent link. Same stuff. Just seeded by some another person for those who prefer torrent. I knew it was kinda hard for me to download with current connection, so moved to office connection and then downloaded frm there. Of course it took some time as it was OS. I downloaded it and tested on vmware 8 and virtualbox. For your information, vmware 7 and earlier don't work with windows 8. They trigger some hardware warnings with vmware. I don't know waht are those warning, so upgraded to vmware 8 for the time being. Also found out that i can use the same disk under virtualbox. You can choose that image for running under virtual box if that is what you want to do.

Instillation - i have 1GB of ram on my computer and allocated 746MB for the virtual machine. It took more than 30 minutes for the installation and with vmware there were many gltiches. I can tell you that if you're planning for the vmware installation, it is better to go for the virtualbox for now. It works fine under virtualbox. For vmware there are many issues which needs to be addressed. For example, vmware tools are not working under the vmwares current version. So you have to wait till they update the installation for the windows 8. Not that you are going to miss much of the vmware tools feature. But in my opinion, just forget it for now.

User interface- developer preview has metro UI fixed on the front. Boot screen and the login screen requires you to have .NET id or so called their login feature. Boot screen and the initial UI looks like xbox screen. Once you get into the desktop you'll see tiles on the screen which are made for the tablets. Tablets interface is different from the desktop and as of now developer preview has no option for switching between tiles and desktop mode. I'll see if there is an option for that. Tiles interface for the normal desktop users looks pretty much childish. I do think there should be normal desktop feature for now. But in this preview there is no such thing for now. But they may do this in future updates. Also tiles are bit annoying as the start button and the tiles both are over crowded in case if you're into app jumbling and stuff. I don't know if we need virtual desktop for the same stuff. But surely it would be great to see virtual desktop for this OS. One more thing is win 7 UI is sill there and nothing is removed from the preview of the windows OS.

Some of the apps tested on this installation are - opera 10 USB, firefox and winamp. Three of them are working fine as of now. Opera's USB installation is working good under windows 8 and nothing much different noticed for now. Firefox current version is also working on the win 8 and i don't think any less from mozzila because of this. They are going to be very stable in future updates.

Over to you, download and let me know if you like the installation of windows 8 and other features. I don't have much to comment because i can't install visual studio here for the testing and so my usage is a bit restrictive from here.

It seems that the websitenames in the quote section are names of official links provided by a partner of Microsoft. These information seems legal. The use of these downloads seems permitted by the user agreements of Microsoft.

Windows 7 Ghost creation & backup using Norton Ghost 15How To Create "ghost" Images (norton) On Windows

I have never used Norton Ghost & the latest version of it I got was Norton Ghost 7.0. I have a 41GB C:, out of which roughly 20 GB remains free even after Disk Cleanup. When I tried to create a Ghost on F:(which was FAT32 formatted), the image size is same as that of free spacei.E. 20GB.I don't understand this. How am I supposed to back this up on pen drive of 8 GB? I remember that I had commanded it to create a High Compression Image. Also, now I got Norton Ghost 15, but don't know how to create a ghost using it.

There is a lot of talk going on between developers these days about .NET and it's future. Most of the desktop development was dependent on C++, C#,VB and other languages on windows. But it seems that new windows is likely to close .NET for developers only to restrict them to HTML+JS+CSS3 based application. At first this may be good news for some web developers but to be strict on desktop development, building audio, video and photography applications that take more system resources are hard to develop with HTML+JS. Not to forget there are other heavy and production level apps as well. So by making apps dependent on browser there seems to be some big issue for application developers those who don't use or connect their apps to HTML+CSS. Take example of mathamatica or matlabs for example, they have nothing to gain from web browser based apps as the app itself is big enough take loads for calculation and graphing stuff. But by making it HTML+CSS based app there is going to be a lot of clutter going to be in it. Microsoft has plans for adding C++ to this API as well. But it is quite clear that they're going to dump .NET and dependent apps on it. Officially they are not making any comment about future of developers on .NET platform. It is something like attracting developers to this platform then making that platform part of OS and suddenly drop the whole project for nothing. So it looks like microsoft is thinking about moving to Azure platform and going to make OS similar to chrome OS (which is internet dependent and browser only). Not sure if developers and other investors will agree with it. But it seems that there is hardly anything they are going to show developers to make any final conclusion. But if this happens then chances are there that desktop publishers will find linux or other platform for their apps and business as not all apps are worthy of being browser dependent or CSS+HTML5fish.
You can read countless rants about this on ars.technica and many other developer news sites. Even silverlight official forum is writing open letter to microsoft to keep .NET alive which you can read on their official forum.
You can read more about this news here and here and here. I'm not sure if many people will stop from upgrading to windows 8 or will keep with win 7 for next few more years. But assuming azure and web based OS as solution makes me think like this could be one bad move from microsoft. I'm of opinion that desktop apps have more use than online apps. So not sure why every tech giant is beating for online os and services even though they know that carriers like AT&T, SPICE and Orange are literally charging per byte and cloud OS or apps makes it harder for them to use computer. So any .NET developer here ? what do you think about windows 8 and it's future for developers ?
