Author: FirefoxRocks Total-Replies: 18 I have used Windows Live Search for that contest that MSN hosted a few months ago (can't remember if it was a year). It works if you have the BETTER keywords to search with, otherwise it doesn't work that well. It is my preferred ALTERNATE search engine (my favourite is Google+Yahoo). MSN Search doesn't work that well. It doesn't come up with that many results and Yahoo! generally searches better than it. I don't use MSN Search anymore. After all, Windows Live Search will replace it! MSN (Microsoft Netowkr) will become WLSN (Windows Live Services Network)

Author: saneax Total-Replies: 4 Some of you like myself swear by google, since we cannot imagine living without google search. However some of the discussions on net has made me thinking over an important issue. Will Google control too much of our lives ? here are the links which discusses an important point on google's future plans ...
Let me add, google has already hired top brains for its (secret project), headed by Robert Pike. It could be soon, the era of booting into a internet harddisk. Otherwise, why is google investing so much into bandwidth ? There is enough material, above to make the next sci-fi movie, where google controls everything. I would be glad to hear your inputs..

Author: Alegis Total-Replies: 14 Just when MSN started to get on my nerves for being obtrusive and inefficient lay-out someone told me of the recently released Pidgin. While his primary choice was to have a messenger with low ram usage, I preferred to compact look and unobtrusive handling of new messages. In case you use multiple messengers you can combine them here into one window, and it seems you can even get on IRC but I haven't tried that yet nor do I think I'll ever require it as I have XChat for that. For those who were familiar with GAIM, same team - different name because of legal issues with AOL. http://www.pidgin.im/ ![]() The message window is even better. Text after the name, as many are used to from IRC. Some functionality is lost such as subtext and webcam. Both which I don't mind - and I'd have preferred a better display picture manager. Tips for after install: disable sound, and enable logging. I like the logging mechanism of Pidgin, displayed as messages are with a working and efficient search function - the default MSN logging is horrible.

Author: LegallyHigh Total-Replies: 8 A couple of weeks ago I was sent a file over AIM (Instant Messaging Service). Stupidly enough, though I didn't know the person I accepted and opened the file. I didn't think there was anything malicious about it since my Virus Program scanned it and nothing was found. So I opened it and a message soon appeared saying "Your trial of Obsidium is over." I have no idea what Obsidium is and I never installed it, so I simply closed the warning box and forgot about it. However, the next time I booted up the machine I tried to login and the computer hesitated, the same Obsidium message came up and another message appeared in the top right corner appeared which said Systeminfo32 (I think that was the name of it) was trying to update itself. I pressed CTRL ALT Delete since my system was now at a halt, with only the two boxes appearing to make progress. Under Processes in Windows Task Manager I saw a program I could not recognized called "system32:systeminfo2.exe". I closed it immediately and I was able to proceed and everything was fine. However, now this occurrence happens every time I start up my computer. I searched for "system32:systeminfo2.exe" on Google and I was unable to find any good information. Can some one help me out. I have even tried using MSCONFIG to disable the EXE on the startup, but it just comes back every start up. I even tried using Hijack this, which is like MSCONFIG, but has more you can disable such as Browser Add-ons and such, but I had no luck. This is a pesky little virus, and though I have no information whether it is eating away at my System's internals, it could be. I tried to find "system32:systeminfo2.exe" so I could delete it, but even running a search left me unable to trace it. Any advice or help on this subject, so I can successfully remove this problem. Also, what kind of virus scanner would you guys recommend.

Author: Brian Total-Replies: 7 Yes, I heard about the sale the day the news hit online. It must have be great to have your small company recognized and bought by such a large company as Yahoo. When any small company finds their name linked with someone as huge as Yahoo, it is a big deal in the business world. In fact, I did some searching and found that Konfabulator is free without the reminder windows that pop up asking you to register. That is a nice bonus, isn't it? Don't forget to download the latest version 2.1 which is about 5.2 mgs worth. Go to Konfabulator and read the new information they have posted about the sale and the future. They are more than excited and I don't blame them. I'll be keeping my eye on them to see what changes happen. According to this article in MacWorld, Yahoo is interested in macs. If anyone wants to peak my interest in a company, tell me they are interessted in my favorite computer. This is good news. I already make my own widgets. Life is getting better all the time.

Author: xboxrulz Total-Replies: 36 Ok, the news has been spreading since this morning when Microsoft announced that they will buy one of the largest search engine companies in the world, Yahoo! Inc. It has been speculating that they had a really close relationship due to the Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger integration. Now that Microsoft is forking over $44.6 BILLION USD in cash and stock, one may wonder ... what will Microsoft buy next? The whole Internet? More on Ars Technica: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080...pping-cart.html I'm totally against this takeover since I use some of Yahoo's services due to my ISP, since they have an agreement with Yahoo! to host all my emails and etc. This also means that if this goes through, all major Canadian ISP services are in the mercy of Microsoft since Bell already uses Microsoft services in the first place. xboxrulz

Author: cyborgxxi Total-Replies: 22 Okay, now I am really convinced that Google is really working things up here!! First, their Google search engine, then Gmail, and then Google Talk. So what now? More implements to the service! Hold on - please correct me if I'm wrong - are you saying that you can CHAT through Gmail?? If that is correct, then I am really amazed By the way, do you know how Google's Google Talk is beating MSN Messenger 8.0? It uses FAR less memory (RAM) than that fat resource hog. I don't know how it does that - there are graphic and textual advertisements but that doesn't really ... well, at least for me, it doesn't cover up their problems. It's like a big hole in the program! Anyway, one of the MAIN reasons I don't use Google Talk is because very few of my friends use Gmail. They're all stuck with *STUPID* MSN Messenger and Hotmail. I mean, dude, Gmail is 2.6 gigabyte storage!! How much is Hotmail? 2 megabytes? That is 0.1% of what Gmail provides! And for free! The ads are very simple and they aren't annoying!! Bah... why do I have to suffer this?

Author: CaptainRon Total-Replies: 11 Now ignore it, or read it with an open mind. MSN Search has the most powerful and promising searching technology. It is based on Neural Networks and NOT on an Algorithm (like Yahoo and Google). Difference between Algorithm, AI Algorithm, and Artificial Neural Networks: 1) Algorithm is a flow controlled logic, that works "Perfectly" IF implemented "Perfectly". It cannot adapt, and rests on the human brain to develop logic. 2) AI Algorithm is the one, that can perform intelligent actions, based on situation and conditions. The overall flow controlled logic is always the same. It uses task completion algorithms like the "Hill Climbing" etc to accomplish a task. 3) It is based on the Architecture of human brains, implementing Neurons. Neural Networks do not use algorithms, but generate results on the basis of inputs fed to the network. The network is interconnected neurons with weighted links. A Artificial neural network is a series of computers which are supposed to learn based on input provided. QUOTEThink about that for a second – a learning computer. One that just doesn’t follow rules assigned to it (which is what the more traditional algorithmic search engines like Google and Yahoo! do) but actually can learn from its results.Essentially MSN search learns from input given to it. For example, if the search engine is told that Ebay is considered an authoritative site on online auctions, then when a person performs such a search they should see Ebay.com at the top of the search results. Upon analyzing Ebay.com the search engine can then learn why it is considered an authority and apply that learning to other sites to see if they are also authoritative. The biggest advantage of such a platform is the engineers at MSN can “train” the system to understand what is considered relevant and important and what isn’t. As time goes on we would expect to see MSN search become one of the most relevant of all the search engines simply because the system is designed to improve itself over time. Of course like any search engine, MSN could be tricked. If we knew what those factors were, we could create a page which could be considered highly relevant, based on the MSN search criteria but would in fact be a garbage page. However because of its ability to learn, the system could quickly adapt to such spam content and readjust rankings “on the fly” to filter out these bogus results. Another advantage to MSN is that the system should be infinitely scalable. Which means as the use of the search grows, it should only be a matter of introducing new hardware, or requirements into the system, having it adapt to the additions and begin using them as if they’ve existed all along. Therefore, as new spam techniques are developed, its simply a matter of training the system to watch out for the new technique, flag it as potential spam and even potentially react to it by filtering all sites using the new technique. By now you are probably saying “holy cow that type of technology must use a ton of resources” and you’d be correct. The amount of computational power required by such a system would be immense. Just the storage capacity needed to store what the system has “learned” would have to continue to grow. In addition, the system also has a great crawler out indexing more and more content all the time. It’s not your typical algorithmic based engine. With most algorithmic systems, the ranking algorithms are finite in size. With this system, one would expect the Neural Net to continue to grow as new pathways are created. Consider this structure as similar to a human brain – as we develop new thoughts and ideas, new synaptic pathways are developed linking areas of the brain to other areas where links previously didn’t exist. Essentially this is what a Neural Network does. While its pathways may not be physical, it does nonetheless develop relationships between previously unrelated sections. Therefore, the engineers at MSN have developed ways to “shortcut” the requirements for ranking. Essentially they have said “sure there are over 500 factors determining the page quality, but in this category only 150 are used, therefore you can use the same 150 associated with this category.” Overall, as long as Microsoft can continue to support such a system, I would think that it could win out in the “search engine wars.” The system appears (at least on paper) to be superior to algorithmic based systems, and appears to be able to adapt more quickly to changes on the web because it doesn’t have to wait for an algorithm change to adapt, it only has to learn of the change and apply itself.

(plaus maybe others, but there the 3 i use) so you are 3 times as likely to find what ur looking for. Apollon (the greek god of Music) can be downloaded from http://apollon.sf.net (or just search sourceforge.net oh... and yes.... this is a linux users only program (but it will also run in knoppix liveCD as a bolt-on) for you windows victims.. oops, users

Author: Vyoma Total-Replies: 25 In one sense, yes, the Google is feared. But it is feared by its competitors in the field it moves. As an end user, it is good for me. Competitors should be fearing each other. That would make it possible for a drive to serve better. And who profits from good service? End-users. There are some services provided by Google that made them beat the other competitors atleast in terms of me as the sole end-user. Here are the services that I use from Google: -Search Engine: There is no denying they are good at it. It was rare that I went to any other search engine like Yahoo or AskJeeves, even long back when I started to use internet. -Friends gouping (Orkut): It is a good one, and I am connected to more of my friends there than Hi5 or something else. -Email (GMail): This, in my opinion is one of the most cherished of the Google's services I use. I mean, it is simple, robust and clutter free - what can beat that? -Marketing (AdSense and AdSearch): I have not been much of a fan about the link or banner exchanges and all the pay-for-click jargons. But these services from Google really made me think. I do not vouch for them yet, but I still have to try it out. -Blogging (Blogster): I was not much of a guy who maintained a journal or diary. But Blogs, in perspective of Blogster made it much more easier, and I have started doing it. I do not know how long it will trudge. I have a fair idea of the hiring criteria of Google and I have to tell that they have got a talented bunch working there. Yes. We should fear, for Google may just dominate the world. [Note: All information I provided here are my own opinion due to the experiences I have. I do not have exact proofs for the things I said, but I got a fair idea. So, do not rely on what I said. Go look for yourself.
