Author: WeaponX Total-Replies: 21 I have 3 computers that are all connected wirelessly and are able to share files. All have files and printer sharing enabled also. I have my laptop here that's connected to a USB printer. I shared the printer and just called it Printer. I tried to connect to this printer from one of the other computers and added it via Network->Server option. I typed in \\laptopsComputername\Printer and it automatically changed the shared name to the actual printer name I have on my laptop. I didn't care since it was still detected/seen. So I printed out a document from that other computer. I see it in the queue from that computer and my laptop, but it's not budging. Is there any way to release this job or perhaps I did something wrong? I already tried to restart the print job to no avail. All 3 computers are using Windows XP. Thanks.

Author: Kushika Total-Replies: 9 Bacially I have 2 computers, both connected by a wireless connection. My computer is the "master" computer, while another one is sharing an internet connection through mine. My computer is connected to a printer via USB, and I would like the other computer to be able to use the printer aswell. In the past this guy managed to set it up....but after a few networking problems the connection to the printer via both computers somehow broke off. I've spent ages on trying to work out how to make it work. Do I need to install any drivers on the other computer? I have all software required installed on my computer, but not on the other one. My computer is running on Windows XP SP1, while the other one runs on Windows XP SP2. On my computer I have enabled printer sharing via control panel, (with the share name of 'hpprinter'). Any suggestions to what I can do now? I don't have access to any manual BTW becuase it's kinda lost in a big pile of other documents... On the other computer, I tried to click "find printer" but all I get is that no printer can be found. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Author: nightfox Total-Replies: 2 Hey, I'm using vista and I'm trying to connect to my mom's computer because it has the printer on it. There seems to be some odd issue between Vista and XP. Here's a basic scenario: 1) I go to explorer and type in \\MBST005 which is my mom's computer, XP Media Center 2) The shared docs/printers come up and I double click the printer that is shared and what everyone uses. 3) I get "Access Denied" 4) I try to open a shared folder and it works. I can save, open, create and delete files. Has ANYONE who uses a shared printer able to use vista to connect? Anyways, the next option is buying a "real" network printer (one with an ethernet card) so that way we can all connect using that method since I know it works 100% no problem. Thanks [N]F

Setting up a peer to peer network. From laying the wires to sharing the printers.
Introduction
This tutorial is to help you set up a wired Ethernet based peer to peer network, which is a type of Local Area Network (LAN for short). Here I will guide you through the steps from laying the wire to the very last thing (which for me is setting up print sharing). If you have any questions please PM me or post here.
Explanation of Networking in short
There are many types of networks in the world of computers, the internet itself is nothing but the linking of thousands...or maybe millions of LANs, Wide Area Networks (WANs); linked together via Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Within this collection of networks are many virtual networks, they all come together to be what we tend to think of as the "Internet", "Net", "Web" or a host of other names. The Internet is governed by Protocols, today we are going to use the most common protocol, Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP for short). TCP/IP has served as the main protocol for well over decade now, and that is what we will use to set up your network. I won't go on as I'm getting off topic.
Setting up the Physical Network
Since a LAN is a physical network you need some things to link the different PCs. You will need (in addition to what is needed to set up your basic internet from your ISP):
Routers range from $30 to $60 and are available at most retailers. You might also need clips to run it along the wall, these are available at most major retailers in different sizes with nails already. For starters run an Ethernet cable from your Cable/DSL Modem to your Router, plug it into the appropriate slot. Then run Ethernet wire from the Router to the Ethernet jack in the back of the PCs. If you need to run a cable along the wall and/or ceiling place the clips to hold the cable in every 3-5 feet, preferably with the nail on the bottom. Once all Ethernet cables are run then plug the AC Adapter into a 110 V (in US) AC Outlet and then into your router. If your router has client software please run it.
Linking the PCs.
Then go to My Computer and then "My Network Places". Click "Set up a home or small office network". How to access My Network Places The wizard will run. Then go to the other PCs and repeat the wizard adding them to the appropriate work group. The wizard be default chooses the generally correct choices, however in the following pictures I highlight the options which you should chose. After that step install the printer drivers on the other PCs. You are then setup with your own Peer to Peer LAN.
Conclusion
I plan to add upon this tutorial, I wanted to take pictures of the hardware mentioned but my camera wasn't working.

Author: techocian Total-Replies: 11 My parents have been persuading me over and over again to do something about our wireless internet connection. No, its not that the router has any problems connecting the computers to the internet. My problem is that i want to connect my computers together to enable the sharing of files, programs, and most importantly, my printer. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to use the already set up wireless connection to link all the computers together. I've done networking with cables yeah but never with wireless. I've tried the wizards Windows XP provides to create networks but it won't work because the computer doesn't know how to use my wireless adapter as a network adapter. This topic probably has appeared somewhere around the forum but the words "wireless" and "networking" is not exactly unusual and searching for the right topic will be a problem. Details: 3 computers: All running Windows XP, one using a wireless LAN card (laptop), one using a PCI wireless adapter, and one using a external wireless adapter. Access point: Wireless Linksys router connected to cable modem. I don't think much information is needed for this since all the computers connect to the router just fine. I would glady appreciate anything that might help me out with this and if you could, maybe a website with step-by-steps telling me how to do this. Thanks!! Happy Christmas! tech

Author: abhay Total-Replies: 16 You will need lan cards on both of the computers. Then follow the following steps : 1. Connect lan cards of both the computers with a cross cable. 2. Assign private IP address of same class to both computers (say 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2). 3. Make sure that workgroup of both the computers is same to share files among them. 4. To share files and internet connection you can run network setup wizard from control panel>network connections. 5. To share your internet connection you can use a proxy server also. I hope this will help you. regards abhay

Author: ejfetters Total-Replies: 33 Hello, I am having some trouble setting up Internet Connection Sharing. Here is my setup. My internet is through a neighbor who is sharing there internet with me wirelessly, so I don't have any type of broadband modem, just a wireless card on my desktop PC. I have a linksys WRT54G router connected to the desktop PC and tried following the guidelines for home networking, and works fine, but no internet connection now. When I unhook my router then my internet connection comes back. Its as if the computer is looking for internet on my network, and I dont know how to have it use the wireless internet from my neighbor and the network just for file/printer sharing. I have a laptop and a Wii in another room that the wireless isn't strong enough to reach. I thought I could use Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop in the room where it works to share that computer's internet connection over the router to the Wii and the laptop and basically "rebroadcast" the internet through my desktop PC's connection. I can't seem to figure this out because each time I hook my router back up, it just kills the wireless internet again. Also, my neighbor's router is on 192.168.1.1 - so I went into the router I have and changed it to 192.168.2.1 thinking this was the problem. When I reconnect my wireless connection to the internet and type in 192.168.2.1 it finds nothing. but 192.168.1.1 finds my neighbor's router. When I go into connections and click to disconnect the wireless connection it goes back to my router and 192.168.2.1 works again. Is it possible to use my desktop's internet connection to rebroadcast to my wii and my laptop through my linksys router? If not, is there a way to use my wireless router for file/printer sharing with the 2 PCs, but still let them find there own wireless internet connection without looking to my network for it? Please help, thank you.

Author: tansqrx Total-Replies: 18 Well I hope this question has not been asked too many times but I am having problems getting two XP machines to do file sharing. Actually this might not be the run of the mill question as I have already checked everything I know and I am still dead in the water. Here is my setup. Setup: PC1, Win XP, my main computer and the one that most likely has the problem PC2, WinXP Both computers are connected via a Linksys firewall/router and then connected to the Net via the router Problem: PC1 is able to see files on PC2 but not vice versa. While on PC2 you can type PC1 address in and the username/password box pops up. When you enter the correct credentials, the box goes away for a moment and then just pops back up like a bad username or password has been entered. I have tried at least 100 times so I am sure it is not a bad username or password. As a side note, the second time the box has PC1/username in the username field just as you would suspect. What I have done: I have lived with this for about a year now but this week I will need to get a printer working on PC2. As I mentioned earlier, PC1 is the main machine and the one that most likely has the problem. I do a lot of programming so I am constantly changing system settings such as stopping services, playing with the registry, and any number of things the average user would never know existed. Below is just a few of the things I have tried. 1. The problem is one way, PC1 can still see files on PC2, network OK 2. PC1 can ping PC2 3. PC2 can ping PC1 4. Both have Internet access 5. Both have static IP addresses, 192.168.1.100 and .101 6. Both have simple file sharing turned off 7. Both must logon via username/password 8. Created new accounts on both with Admin privilege to rule out account issues 9. Both have File and printer sharing for MS installed 10. No firewall issues as I have disabled them both. 11. I can do a nbtstat and both computers have a record, PC1 being the master browser 12. Everything else seems to be fine except file and print sharing 13. Both are on the same workgroup Possible causes: 1. Service turned off?, I have enabled everything even close. 2. Netbios problem. PC1 and PC2 have the same settings, don’t know how this could affect it. I thought MS went to a different method via port 443 instead of Netbios anyway. 3. Advanced security setting changed on PC1? That pretty much describes everything I can think of and if I could think of it I tried it. I still believe it has to do with a service disabled on PC1, possibly the one that is needed to authenticate a remote computer. If you know which service this is let me know. I hope someone can shed light on this situation as I am lost right now. I have worked network support for years and I have not a clue. If you can give me a solution I would greatly appreciate it and then take you out to dinner (25 mi limit, lol).
