I used this to start with a few years ago, it can manage online and 3D games and its simple drag+drop feature is an alternative to the GM code if you are completly stuck

Hi Everyone;

I am not new to java nor am I incompentent.
ANyways, I just wanted to shared a book that I looked through
that seemed fairly easy to follow for java beginners.

IT gives a lot of demos and explainations on terms and methods.
Also, it gives you very good instructions on compiling, building, and deploying your game.

The book that I am referring to is:
Beginning Java 5 Game Programming
Author is Jonathan S. Harbour from University of Advancing Technology
ISBN: 1-59863-150-0
Yes... it is a THOMSON course Technology boo.

Its a small book and pretty inexpensive.
I bought it brand new for like 20 dollars.

IT gives a lot of samples to download.

Here are my ratings for it:
Readability: 8.5/10
Content: 8/10 ... its for beginners

Any feedback would be great, either good or bad.

PLEASE THREAD CRAP IF YOU WANT TOO =)

ok I am trying to get into programming and then into games. So i was wondering if anyone knows a good language except c++. I have started to learn it but the problem is its not user friendly for a first time programmer. So I would appreciate it if you can maybe name some languages and there weak points and strong points i would aprreciate it.

Hi there, now ive read many posts on people asking for help on how to make a text based game, i'd like to make one myself and I know some PHP and MySQL to go for it.

Ok that out of the way, the programming languages going to be used for it will be PHP and MySQL (if you've not already guessed that)

I'm just looking for some help and stuff like that to get me on my way, im a complete beginner to this whole text based game stuff, sooo any help would be appreciated thanks!

PS: dont say go to MCCodes or anything, that website is just a bunch of kiddies making some buggy codes ;)

anyone think unbuntu is a good linux for me to properly start on?

ive dabbled into gentoo - not a great idea for a programming/hardware/clever stuff noob. i nearly managed to install it properly as a dual boot on an old p3 win98. the dual boot is fine but there are mounting issues [maybe a different thread soon]

on my real pc - p4 winxp sony thing - im gonna get a second harddrive and some more ram and stuff and dual boot linux. do you think that unbuntu would be a good choice untill i can figure out gentoo? - i want power!!!! i will probably use linux for general browsing, a little design/web sites, office and open source games. winxp for video editing on adobe and music

any suggestions

Java3d is a good platform for beginners to start programming games. I myself started to learn Java 3d from spinning simple cubes to create user-interactive buttons.

The basic requirement of using java3d is you must have a good foundation of Java language before attempting to do so.

I don't think there is too many Delphi developers on here (though I think there is a few), I would regardless like to share the resources (websites) that I use myself for help with this great IDE/language.

Delphi Basics: http://www.delphibasics.co.uk

Very useful for not only a beginner but a reference for anyone, it also has information and tutorials for the .NET version.

Delphi Pages: http://www.delphipages.com/threads

The ONLY Delphi forum (aside from game programming specific ones) that I frequent.

It also has a nice list of free/shareware/commercial Delphi applications and components/add-ons.

About - Delphi section: http://www.delphi.about.com

Has quite a few useful articles for reading on many subjects for Delphi.

Torry's Delphi: http://www.torry.net

Has many components, tutorials, articles, hints and tips etc for Delphi, and I mean many!!!

PGD: http://pascalgamedevelopment.com/

Great site with a forum community tailored to game programming in Pascal/Object Pascal (mostly Delphi users), has a nice list and support forums for specific graphical packages (like DirectX/OpenGL packages for game creation in Delphi and others).

That's all I have for now, could this be stickied somewhere? (Not sure if there is a proper place for it at this time).

My friends been telling me they've got a Free-Running game in the making (Free-Running: http://www.parkour.org.uk/). Said he'd seen a program on the making on it, and it looks more or less like the Tony Hawks style engine.. which i can visualize... Sorta behind the person you're playing..

But I was thinking, do you think a Free-Running game would work like.. in Third-Person view with full control of the person... running about, spotting ledges/rails/bricks on walls in the map around you an making up your combos etc? Like.. without the restraints of a small-ish map and the Tony Hawks control... A lot more freedom to move about how you like? It would be very hard to code.. and the controls/camera angles would need to a lot of work to succeed.. but if it did, I think it'd be fun as hell to play. I reckon the new game in the makings gonna be good either ways, but the freedom of plays always a factor in the gameplay department..

Hmmm god knows ha, im no game designer..

My website is nowhere near complete, but I am already having second thoughts about it. The main idea of it is a text-based T.V. Station Management Game. I recently read a post here at Astahost where someone wanted to make a text-based game, and they got some negative feedback about it. Although I think it was one of those RPG kinda text-based games, the fact that there are so many text-based games out there can not be denied.

Now the second part to this post is what my new idea would be for a site. What I was thinking was (and yes this is also out there alot too) an beginners guide to programming. The spin would be that it would be from beginner to beginner. I would put what I have learned and already tried and tested out on my site. The site would be updated regularly. I have learned quite alot in the last few months since I've started doing this. Yes I still have my problems, but I am working them out.

I don't know. I just love programming. I was also thinking that if I did a programming site, I could do the Amazon.com Affiliate program and put some programming books on my site as well. Like I said, some advice would be great on this topic.
