yOU WOULD BE AMAZED TO KNOW THAT NOW WE GENERATE ALMOST 43000 GB daily. Its a fact and its increasing every second as now more and more users are turning their head towards the net to share their documents and files and to share videos and all instead of cd though they are also here but the best way to share the videos file audo or any document is file hosting site.
There are tons of filehosting sites which i think you would prefer. I did a market survey when i needed a file hosting site which can host my file for lifetime and also never ever make it public. I mean it wont make my file visible to all and should not let the search engine index my file. Neither any other user can view my file. ONly the one having the link can download the file. It should also be 5gb or unlimited file size. I need to upload a file of 4 gb and was thinking of expanding so i also made this criteria that the max. one file size should be more than 5gb or preferred unlimited, but the bandwith didnt matter for me as i want to sahre some of my private files or keep a backup of my private file so that in future if i want to i can download it. i wanted a cheap but preferred a free service but after doing some survey if i want this all features then i should pay some bucks or else just forget the idea of hosting files. Here are some of the list of the sites which offer this kind of service and plz dont say that you can upload 200 mb file size because i didnt want to downaload it in parts and dont scam here if you dont like the thread. You can many sites which say that your file lives for as long as your premium accounts status stays with you and once you are general your file will be deleted. Some say that after the 60 days of last download you get your file vanished and many another toc. It was impossible for anyone to get a lifetime membership from any site as its too costly. You cant register a premium account everytime or every year unless and untill you are a spoiled child of a rich dad. Many offer a life time membership but they are too costly.
Here is some of the sites which you would like to know.
The list is according to my choice. Purely according to me. Before taking any decision plz check the site. It can be updated but i check the site a week ago so dont think much changes. Still its my suggestion, you like it well and good or else plz dont post scam here.

1) Filebox.com- I like this the most because they fulfiled all my criteria. It was cheap and also secure and i think it is a new service in net. You can upload a file of anysize and your files stays as long as you are a premium member. Now you would tell then why i have put the site in the first postion in my list??? Then heres the answer-Lifetime mebership costs 19.95$. Yes this is just hell cheap. I mean can you imagine lifetime just for 20 bucks. I dont think its an bad idea. They wont share your file with other members nor will they let the search engine index your files. Only the one having the link can find your file. Buy an lifetime mebership and let your file live for ever it the best service which i think will rock the net sooner or later. Filebox is easy to use and also lets you earn money if your file is download like for every 1000 download you get 10$ (i am not sure of the amount) check the service by visiting www.filebox.com. Its having a simple template which is nice and also lets a room for you to breathe. You get a premuim status for lifetime and also the file is secure i think this is the best for me.

2)Megaupload.com- This is the famous MU. This is in demand for sharing illegal stuff mainly for warez for for general use also this is nice. BUt a flaw your file satys as long as you are a premium member. They provide a lifetime membership for 195$ which is pretty much for me. They say they are secure but the hackers are constantly hitting the mu accounts to get access and you want that one of them would wander in your account so better keep out. They are the best if you have lotta money to give in file hosting sites. There support is great and also you get the reply in 2 days.If you are plannign of storing your file for lifetime and you have some money to spend then i would recommend Megaupload. You get many benifits like if you are a warez user fan and likes to download file in http then Mu is the best as almost every stuff can be found in MU. For general member the file size limit is round 200 mb but once you are premium you get unlimited one.

3)Rapidshare.com- Now i dont think i have to tell you al about this as you all would surely know about this site. This is the largest on the net and you can get everything on net. But the flaw is the same as MU. Your file stays as long as you are a premium member then your file dies after 90 days from last download. And also for general user the limit is just 200mb. They dont offer lifetime membership but a yearly membership which is around 54gbp. And its impossible for all to renew their membership each year. Also RS is famous in all the warez users and hackers and they hit the servers regularly to get rs premium accounts. RS tries to protect your account but still fails to protect the account. RS account is surely in demand in all the forums. I would recommend rs only if you have a lotta money and you upload file for the commercial use or say one which will be downloaded every now and then. But be preperaed to have your account hacked. As the hackers dont let the rs members have a nice breathe they constantly hack the servers and sometimes they are successful also. Also serach engines are in way to index the file being stored there and tring to get the files made public.

3) Divshare.com- i would love to use this service as they are nice and also offers your file to stay forever. But there are 2 things which i dont like 1) they make your file public, 2) There is a limit to your file thats 500mb). But you get unlimited bandwith and space with no ads. Preety good site if you dont mind your file to be shared or made public but just want your file to stay forever. They are great for comercial use and to send small files with a lifetime validaty.

4) NOw i dont have any site in my 4th rank rather there are number of sites competitng to come in my list in 4th rank lol :)

Finally, I bought a hosting plan at Computing Host. Now, I would like to know how to move all my files and databases to that hosting account from my present AstaHost account.
Once that is done, I will change the nameservers to point to Computing Host nameserves in my domain control panel.

B) Thanks in advance.

Okay site is up and running, figured out how to upload files, manage folders etc. So I tested it out and uploaded 3 songs and a few random files. One problem... Where can I get the URL? If I right click the file it give me the URL to edit it... where can I get the URL to the file itself? Thanks!

I found this to be quite alarming when I found that sites I blocked using HOSTS were still accessible by Safari. My HOSTS file consists of many automatically added entries by Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster and similar programs, but I also have some user added entries also. It is a 228KB file, and a small segment that I added looks like this:

127.0.0.1 myspace.com
127.0.0.1 www.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 ca.myspace.com

I found it to be inaccessible by all user accounts using Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera and Flock. However, I tried accessing it using Safari and it was completely accessible! This applies to all user accounts. Initially I thought it was cached, but I emptied the cache and history and it still worked.

Isn't the HOSTS file supposed to be network-wide? If so, how is Safari accessing it? If it only applies to Internet Explorer, then how come it is still working with Firefox, Flock and Opera?

I need to block sites in Safari and it doesn't seem to include any plugins to do this effective (I'm using Windows btw, not a Mac).

Hello. A while ago, a friend showed me this PHP code (wget) which allows you to get files from other sites. I was a simple one liner type thing.
Since my old host (Nytka) went down, I've lost it, as has my friend.

Do you know anything about wget, and could tell me it?

Hi, I have a question I would like to ask before I make any serious commitment.. Many website hostings that I have looked at, does not allow that you can have some zip files for others to download if they so wish to use the files..
The zip files I am referring to is that I wish to make more personal websets or even graphics onto the site, and if someone likes it, they could download it for free. Is this allowed on this hosting?
I would only do a small portion of it, I take pictures with my digital camera and make websets from the pictures I have taken from around my home and whatnot. I hope this would be allowed as I really do enjoy making simple websets :P
Otherwise I will be devoting my personal pages to help others with the game I play :P

Thank you for your time to answer :o

I couldn't find anywhere more relevant to put this, so I decided to go for the miscellaneous forum. I was tempted to put it in to cPanel, but it's not directly related to it. If a mod's got a better suggestion, do feel free to move it. :D

Firstly, I should probably make it clear that AstaHost is my first host. As such, I have little experience with the structure of a site. Looking at File Manager just now led me to see a stackload of files that I 1) have no idea what they do, and 2) don't remember seeing there when I first started my hosting plan. There's also a few that I vaguely remember being around, but I'm not entirely sure why they're needed. Let me go through what I've got:

In the "root" directory:

.cpanel (folder)
.fantasticodata (folder)
.sqmaildata (folder)
.trash (folder)
.cgi-bin (folder)
etc (folder)
mail (folder)
public_ftp (folder)
public_html (folder)
www (folder
.bash_logout
.bash_profile
.bashrc
.contactemail
.contactsavetime
.lastlogin
.mailboxlist

I'm pretty sure most of that stuff isn't entirely necessary. Take .sqmaildata, for example. I used the Squirrel Mail thing once while I had a quick look at a test email during the time I was setting up Outlook Express. Do I need to keep it? Will it damage anything if I get rid of it? What about .fantasticodata? Again, I used it a little while ago but haven't touched it since (and don't intend to).

I assume .cpanel is vital, but there's a fair amount of stuff in the root directory alone that I'm pretty sure is surplus to requirements. I'm starting to wish I'd made a list when I first got the hosting.

Perhaps someone (ideally someone who definitely knows what's vital and what isn't :o) could make such a list? Ideally it would include subfolders, too (so what you get when you first create a hosting account) for the benefit of the rest of us who aren't quite so technically minded. Sure, I'm well on my way to creating a website (locally, I might add), but it's the top-level admin side that I'm not entirely up-to-scratch with.

Thanks!

EDIT: Hmmm...it seems that the "www" folder is actually a shortcut to "public_html". Also, do I have to have all of these MS FrontPage files lurking everywhere?

I am having some odd problems with my hosted site. They started sometime yesterday. I have not made any changes for about two weeks.

In Firefox, the index page (index.php) for Joomla comes up blank. I can access my Control Panel and can check that the files are there and look correct. No favorites icon is displayed either and the page source is empty. In Safari, I get the favorites icon but then get a network error and a blank page ("Safari can’t open the page “http://mistymanor.astahost.com/”. The error was: “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.")

Can someone verify that my site works/does not work from your location? It might be something upstream from me causing the problem, but, obviously, Astahost itself loads fine.

This is a little trick to surf with less ads.
-Step one-
Locate the hosts file:
WinXP/2K =%SYSTEMDRIVE%\%windir%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME =%SYSTEMDRIVE%\%windir%\

There you'll see a file called 'hosts' .

-Step two-
Download the hosts file
Now you can add hosts to the hosts file or simply download a complete hosts file.
The above one is from http://www.mvps.org/ and it's a great one.

If you want to add a site url, you can do this like this:

CODE

127.0.0.1 www.domain.com

-Step three-
Understanding how this works.
It fairly simple. What this file does is remapping the domains to 127.0.0.1. 127.0.0.* is used by nothing on the internet, it doesn't exist, but if you ping, you'll get an answer from your own pc.
Example:
If a site want to load an image (http://www.domain.com/justanexample.gif) from http://www.domain.com, then it will go to http://127.0.0.1/justanexample.gif for the image and since it doesn't exist, it won't show.

-Step four-
Reboot. It's not always needed, but just reboot to be shure.

-Problems-
Yes, this simple hack can cause some problems, some sites wait before they get an answer from the sponsor (ie. google ads) and the site will work very slow or totaly not. You can simply rename the hosts file as long as needed and after the visit you can rename it 'hosts' again to surf with less ads.

www.musichere.co.uk [195.20.225.126]
astahost.com [69.50.168.69]

Your nameservers haven't broadcasted, which means, you will need to wait before you can access your website. The IP of your web domain still points to the wrong server (not astahost). Normally you need to wait 48 hours after applying it.
If you need the site to be able to upload things, you can make a little change so that you can access it yourself already, but remember that other people still won't be able to get there!

Ok, this is what you do :
Either you change your hosts file. Open notepad and open this file:
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\Hosts
(or replace whatever the dirs with what they are with you..)
and add this entry to the file:

CODE

www.musichere.co.uk         69.50.168.69; My Temporary DNS Solution

Or, what you can do as well is the following :
Go to your network settings, I'll presume you have windows:
Control Panel => Network Connections => Rightclick on your network connection => Properties => Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) => Properties => Use the following DNS server addresses : => add 64.5.44.113 (which is ns1.astahost.com).
All done.

If after the second thing, you experience problems surfing the net, set it back to what it was. I don't know whether it's a good idea to use Astahost's NSes for DNS, but it should help you now.
Remember! This will only fix things for your pc alone.

Looking for free hosting I found this today:

QUOTE

rarhost is a unique and original free file hosting storage service only for .rar files!

for the uploader:

* host unlimited .rar files online and share with friends.
* 150mb size limit per .rar, split archives allowed with no upload limit.

for the downloader:

* view the contents of the archive before you download, ensuring it contains the files you want.
* advanced password support, no more downloading a .rar just to find out you need a password!

general info:

rarhost is a unique new file hosting site, only for winrar .rar archives and was officially opened in august 2006. why are we limiting our service only for rar files? we offer much more than just basic file hosting, our system has advanced information about each rar file, therefore we have decided to specialize in .rar files, for example you can see what the archive contains before you download, ensuring it contains the files you want. for a bigger list of features please visit the index page, or check out our faq page for those questions everyone needs to know <_<

common scenario:

* Jack from england wants to share his video collection to 4 friends located across the world.
* Jack finds his video folder which contains 6 of his videos and then uses winrar to archive the folder in to one compressed file.
* Jack visits rarhost, browses for the rar file and uploads the archive to rarhost.
* Jack then continues the upload process until he has the download address, with the address saved he shares with his friends online.
* Ed, one of Jack's friends wonders if it contains the videos he wanted to see, so he checks the rar contents box on the download page.
* Ed sees that the archive contains all the videos he wanted and downloads the .rar file.

I haven't use this service yet, but I am planning to do a download section in one of my sites. So I guess it will be usefull..

Enjoy!
