Just got a internet problem the other day. Originally I have only two computers accessing the wireless router/modem (Westell Versalink 327W). No problems at all. I had to install the Verizon software which I thought was necessary.

Well, we have an extra laptop now and I just thought to myself, maybe I can give this new laptop wireless internet without installing all the useless Verizon software. I got it working (set up the SSID, WEP, etc...). Great... Until ALL 3 machines started to go online... I see a warning message on my laptop saying that there is more than one machine trying to use the same IP.

My laptop (Windows XP Home) usually has 192.168.1.47 as the IP address. Router assigns me that IP every time. The Desktop machine (Windows 98 SE) always uses 192.168.1.45 (also assigned by router). Now this new laptop (Windows XP Home) seems to be the cause of all the problems.

I was online first. Then the new laptop was online. The last one to go online was the desktop and that started to give me the warning message on my laptop. I checked my IP address and it changed to 192.168.1.46 instead, so that bugged me. The new laptop went online without any problems and the same applies to my laptop. But the desktop now can't get online. I tried assigning an IP address to it manually but that didn't work. It's not getting a IP address, except one from the router 169.254.x.xxx which means it's not picking up a connection.

Why is this happening? My router is assigning the IP addresses itself (DHCP presumably). Why couldn't it just assign a free one like 192.168.1.44 for the new laptop? Also curious why it changed my IP to 192.168.1.46 instead of ...47. I checked back now on this laptop and it's back to ...47

Thanks.

QUOTE

I have two cards, one is connected to my brothers PC for sharing

So, the problem seems simple.
You should leave the one connect to Internet like it is currently.
the second one seems connected only to your brother's PC.
So, the second one can be configured to a fixed IP addreess (let's say 192.168.1.10) and at the other end of the cable your brother's one should be configured to a fixed address, 192.168.1.11 for example.
Can you confirm that when connected to your brother's pc you simply have an Ethernet cable, or are other PC's also connected to yours through the same adapter and a switch ?

Hmmm...tekken for the pc would probably open up a new level of fighting if the makers considers the modding community if they decide to make tekken for the pc. Because first tekken is a great game alone by itself because of its gameplay factor and its promising cast of characters with different personalities. But if they were to make the game and give the modding community a handle on it, they can make what once was tekken into a entirely crazy game that everyone will be talking about. The modding community seems to me as the best in satisfying the needs and wants of the gaming community. Because they address what was not included in the original game as well as fixing the various bugs that are in the current game. Take for example a game like Elder scrolls IV: oblivion, a great game alone by itself, but with the mods that are made for it, it turns the game into a complety new game and from every mod makes the game more refreshing and complete.

If tekken, had mods for it I cant imagine the type of mods that would be out for it, maybe we could probably add more charcters of our own, create are own custom moves, bosses, story, etc. This is the level that I wish all games would be at, where us the gamers themselves can contribute to making a good game better. Hopefully, future games the makers will think of the modding community as their extra content makers of cleaning up there mess and making their game more complete. Tekken for the PC, as well as other games for the PC Im all for it.

Where we are

In this time of world it's quit impossible to using computer without fighting with virus & worms. Especially if you use windows pc. It's not because windows is not enough secured but it's most popular & almost every cyber criminals are targeting windows. Even if you use a Linux distribution or a Mac OSX you are no more secured! As i writing this post i just heard to days ago Apple is advising their Mac OSX users to use a antivirus software. Well Their is plenty of antivirus software suite to take them down. And they are doing not a bad job either. But they can do well against a known virus. So a brand new virus are still a good threat to the users which are creating every day. Though their is heuristic mode on every well known ( or not so well known ) antivirus. But they are effective for only 5% to 30% as PCWorld magazine. So you are still under a very good threat especially if you use internet on your pc or you are in a network.

Why i am talking too much

After informing you the present situation i just like assure you that i don't believe that it's impossible to stop virus to gain access on your pc without your permission. But you have to aware enough in your every move. I just wanna tell you have threat but not in a danger.

I use Windows XP so this post is also for Windows XP. But i hope other windows users will also get some help.

What they want & how they access

In present time most virus & multiple worms wants to control you pc. They want your secured information. Especially your bank & financial information. They can access to your pc through internet or with a removable media such as flash drive & memory card. Visiting a worm affected website or downloading a unknown file especially torrents files are dangerous. Also if your system's autorun feature is enabled for removable media it's a real danger for you. Because removable media is very popular & it may used in multiple pc.

How to stop them

I told you before that your attention & awareness can stop them to access to you pc. Just read the following tips, mind it & use those on your day to day life.

Tips #1:

Your Window must be upto date all times as possible. Microsoft already released SP3 for Windows XP & SP1 for Windows Vista. Of course you must have those. You you have no internet access from your PC download it from your friends PC or cyber cafe.

Automated Windows update is a good very choice for hassle free update. If you like to update manually no problem. But it regularly.

Tips #2:

I must use a antivirus software. And of course it's database should be upto date.

There is some sites to provide free scanning with multiple antivirus. Upload a file to check a suspicious file. It's a wise move as not every virus or worm is not detected by any single security software.

There is also a few free antivirus suite. But as PCWorld magazine those are not as effective as a paid one. They said those are not bad either. So choice is yours.

Some antivirus software like Norton & Kasprskey has self defense control. It make impossible to stop a antivirus while running. It's a very good option because some intelligent worm & virus try stop antivirus software.

Never try to install more than one antivirus. They can fight each other. Well you can't install a second antivirus. Because the second one will not permit you.

Tips #3:

Windows has built in firewall for one way. Disable it. It's useless. You can use a Zone Alarm firewall it's the best. Download it from ... ... well the address may be http://zonealarm.com. Or why not search on google. Your antivirus software should have a firewall. You amy disable it or use it.

Somebody who use a router may think they have hardware based firewall. They don't need a software firewall any more. Bad idea! Install a software firewall is very very recommended.

By the way to disable windows one way useless firewall. Open Security Center from task bar. If it's not their go to Control panel. It will be their. You can also do it from <emp>Control Panel > Administrative Tolls > Services </emp>.

Tips #4:

Stop autorun for removable drive ( such as flash drive, memory card etc ). Download tweakUI from microsoft or from download.com. Using this tweaking software you can stop autorun for removable drive & also their is a option for DVD & CD drive. After doing this you may have to restart you PC.

When use a removable drive don't enter directly on that drive using Windows Explorer. Right click on your flash drive or memory card. If you see a autorun feature it declare there is a very good threat for virus. If you double click on that drive to access on that drive the autorun will be activated. That simple mean the virus or worm will be in your PC just in a second of time. Some smart virus also tweak 'Open' & 'explore' feature. That mean don't ever access to a flash drive or memory card directly. By the way in your Blue Ray drive, DVD or CD drive may have also that autorun. It is because that movie disk want to run automatically. This is may not a threat but if the disk is self burn especially on other peoples PC it should be a threat.

So the question is how to access them. First scan that Flash drive, disk drive & memory card by a good antivirus. If you have a dedicated anti spyware use that also. If there is any old worm or, virus it should be caught. Though if it doesn't caught any thing i can't say you are secured. Use run command to access that drive. It will not activate autorun. So go to <emp>Start Menu > Run</emp>. Type the drive later with a ":" . If your drive is 'F' type 'F:' then enter. Another option is Enter you My computer then click on address bar find your desired drive later.

After if entered on that drive you must have to uncheck 'Hide hidden files and folders' option from 'Folder Option'. In Windows XP Folder Option will be found in <emp>Explorer > Tools</emp>. You also find it in 'Control Panel'. But if you already infected with virus the Task manager & Folder Option may be disabled. Don't worry if it disabled you can activate it. I will tell you very soon how you can activate it.

Well in Folder Options click on 'View' tab. Then click on 'Show hidden files and folders' radio button. Also uncheck 'Hide extension for known file type' & 'Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)'. Now all files with extension will be shown in your PC. If you see any autorun.ini file in the flash drive etc. First open the file. There must be a file name & path. Find that file delete that & the autorun.ini . If there is any folder with a .exe extension it must be a virus with a folder icon.

Some times you may seen your flash drives activity LED is all time flashing even your when your flash drive is ideal. That mean a your flash dive or memory card running a program. It may be a virus may be a good program like portable application. You can not delete a program when running. You have to stop it first. Use Task Manager to do that. As i told before if you have already been infected Task Manager may be disabled. But don't worry we will enable it pretty soon.

Well after all type of checking your removable drive & clean up ( if necessary ) you have to hide the system files again. Because if you delete any system files of windows your system may be gone south.

Tips #5:

Many virus first stop Task Manager & Folder Option. Why? Because Using Task Manager you can stop there activity & with Folder Option u can see them by unchecking hide hidden & system files. So if you need to restore 'Task Manager' & 'Folder Option' its not hard. So don't worry.

CODE

Go to Run. Then type 'gpedit.msc' & enter.
Next, follow the path

<emp>User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer</emp>

Find 'Removes the Folder Options item from Tools Menu' double click on it. Then select 'disabled' radio button & click on OK. This will enable the Folder Option feature. Now we gonna enable Task Manager with the same way.

Follow the path in gpedit.msc

<emp>User Configuration > Administrative Templates > system > Ctrl+Alt+Delete</emp>

Find 'Remove Task Manager' double click on it. Select disabled radio button then click OK.

Tips #6:

Open the Task Manager under the process tab you can see your all running process. Its very good if you remember your running process & understand those. You see the process 'svchost.exe'. You must see there is multiple process with the same 'svchost.exe' name. And the user name is <emp>"SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICES, NETWORK SERVICES"</emp>. This is normal> But some times some virus use this name to hide but they generally they can't hide the user name. If it is a virus or worm the user name may be administrator or the user name of the PC ( generally your name ). So carefull if you see some thing like this.

To see the process activity in deep i better recommend you to use <emp>Process Explorer</emp>. It's a freeware you can download it from http://www.sysinternals.com or from http://www.download.com.

It gives you a deep view of process. Which service run under which process, description of a process, company name, Google search link etc.

Tips #7:

If your system becomes unstable, running higher process than normal, System become slower, taking longer time to boot etc thats all can cause of virus. Follow the above tips to resolve. There is no antivirus can stop them without your complete contribution. So be a warrior.

Thats all i have to say. If there is any point i missed this time i'll try to add later. I want you comments if you like this tutorial or even don't like. Enjoy your computing safely.

Anyone play freeware games? I do sometimes and maybe no one else does. This might be a stupid topic but I was wondering if anyone knew of some good freeware games. There are alot of horrible free games out there and very few good ones. However, I have found a few good ones. Such as:

Eternal Daughter
Cave Story
Streambolt
Destruction Carnival
etc.

If you want to download these I could find you some download addresses but you could also easily find them at gamehippo.com or by searching for them in a search engine. Maybe I'm the only one in this forum who plays freeware games, maybe not. So maybe I've missed some games, if anyone knows of others please post some.

Domain names are by the Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN: http://www.icann.org/) and the names can be registered through ICANN approved registrars. Once you register a domain, your name, home address and telephone number can be accessed by anyone on the web, unless you protect it through a proxy, showing the proxyhost's information. Most people use this to protect their personal information, but those with bad intentions do so to spam.

But my discussion point is, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO: http://www.uspto.gov/) registers trademarks (TM meaning unregistered trademark or [_R_] representing registered trademark ~ it is illegal to use [_R_] if you haven't registered it). You can register a trademark by hiring a lawyer to do so (price may vary, costs around 1000 US dollars) or you can make a website do it (cheaper, around $500). Because there are few domain names that are good (since registrants register them all the time), people on the web known as Cybersquatters see a good domain name that's already a registered trademark, purchase it, and hope to make a lot of money selling that domain name. If that is blatantly the case, then the registrant may be sued for the domain name. Your domain name might infringe upon trademark laws if:

- The registered trademark is really popular.
- Intentions to grab the name for profits are clear (ex. coca-cola [dot] com). This doesn't apply to more general things like (ex. dictionary_DOT_com).
- Other things I can't bother to remember.

It is very hard to find a case in suing the registrar. Even if you can, you have to file paperwork, hire a lawyer, bring the dude to a court, and fight and stuff all for a name (something of little value). A more effective approach would be to email the guy and say, "I really don't want to be bothered by the law so I'll stake a purchase for your domain. How about $250? That good enough to bribe you?" Or you can just sell your trademark to the kid.

My opinion on this is that everything's just silly. Why bother with trademarks? If someone steals it, then they steal some of your profits. (A Microsoft-labeled computer is worth more than a "Great Quality (GQ)" one.) Why not use Micorsoft? It's all a name, you can't own a name. People nowadays go so far for money, it isn't even funny (hey, rhymes).

I'd like to know what you think.

On the Internet there are many browser-based MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games), and there are rather popular because you don't need anything beside a browser. However, most of these games are basicly army games - register, collect money, build an army and attack other players. Personally, I got bored of that system, and needed something where I would be in the role of a single person. That's when I found out about Slave Hack.

Most of you that are old hard core gamers probably remember Uplink, a simple but addictive game where you are a hacker fighting for his place among the best. The game required you to clear the logs, cover your tracks etc. That's exactly what Slave Hack is about, and it's a free browser-based game!

The game started 06/06/2006, and the admin had posted a small ad here at Astahost (http://www.astahost.com/new-online-hacking...ame-t12407.html). The number of players slowly grew until it was posted on www.digg.com. During a small period of time the number of players jumper from 500 to 5000. And it's not for nothing - the game really is good - and I know a lot of people from Astahost will agree with me on this one.

In this game, you start as an ordinary Internet user, with no programs whatsoever and an awful computer. That start would be very hard to cope with if there weren't some tutorials to get you going. On the game forums there are multiple manuals created to help new players get started. Also, you can't get hacked in the first 60 minutes of the game, because you are in the "newbie protection". But after that, be prepared to have all your files deleted.

Most players don't delete logs in the beginning, and that's the biggest mistake. Everything you do is logged - one wrong step and all your files are deleted. After that happens for a few times, everyone will learn their lesson, reset their IP and start over.

There are two things you should worry about all the time - money and hacking. Money is gathered by installing spam and warez virii on other computers (NPCs and real players) and sending "advertising" mail or warez files. As long as the slave, how the computer you are using is called in the game, doesn't change its IP address, you are accumulating profit. In order to really earn that money, you need to collect profit. Again, it the slave restarts its IP, you lose all you have earned. The money you collect is kept in banks, and that's another weak point. Banks have their logs where everything is recorded. If someone finds out your bank account number, say goodbye to all the cash.

Another thing you can do is DDoSing. Basically, it's making a target computer "overheat". You do not gain any money, but the target becomes crippled and open for any attacks. Therefore, you get a hacking chance, reputation and pleasure.

As I already said, the computer you start with as absolutely awful, so you must upgrade it as soon as possible. You can do so for you CPU, modem and hard drive. All the upgrades are very expensive, so you must save a lot of money, but the improvements are vast.

There is so much more that can be said about this game, but it would take a lot of time to write it. The right thing to do now is go to www.slavehack.com, register and play! However, if you need more information, feel free to visit my blog dedicated to Slave Hack. There you will find various explanations and it can be very useful. It is located here.

Since I am addicted to this game, I'll give it 11/10 on the mark sheet :(

Ok, so the deal is I'm creating an online text-based MMORPG which many of you have probably encountered in the past. Now I'll run through the ideas I've had (and most of which are already built) for the game and was wondering if anyone else had any input.

The game is called Drug Mann and is obviously a criminal-based game. You each start at level 1 and have to work to build up your stats. There are many way to earn money in the game, and you can select a special skill which gives you advantages in certain areas, like drug farmer, loan shark, hired muscle, drug trader and so on.

One of the features I've built in is similar to the computer in the game Grand Theft Auto 4, you can visit websites in a nifty little browser window. The websites are stored in the game, however if you type in a web address that isn't stored in the game it will then search the real internet. So for example I have an in-game site called notepad.com so if you type in that address it will go to my game site and not the real notepad.com but google however is not in the game so you will go to the real google page. I wrote the computer using javascript and a frame inside a table with the image of a computer monitor around the outside, so the actual displayed page is a frame but not the browser bar or the monitor image. Through this computer you can access all sorts, and decided to put my forums and chatrooms on websites instead of on the games menu for "realism" lol also there is an email website that is tied in to the game itself, so if you get a new message then the game will alert you and give you a quick link to load the email website.

The next feature I'm currently building is drug farming. You can rent several properties per city and each property has so much space, you can expand the farm inside the property to fill this space as long as you can afford to maintain it (materials, weekly rent, utilities) and once the drugs have grown you can harvest and process then sell and grow more in the same equipment, however there is a chance that a farm can be raided by the police. Also if you're a drug farmer then obviously your crops will grow faster.

Obviously I've built a casino for the game, however there will be limits on how much you can wager per table depending on your casino membership status (monthly fee for each level).

The bank is interesting because you can only deposit up to 500k in your personal account (also you can earn daily interest up to 500k) and after that you need to open business accounts which depending on the plan can hold up to so much and will be charged weekly. There is also a chance of accounts being seized but if you're fully paid up with the local authorities you have a chance of being warned which accounts are going to be seized and drain them before it happens. You can also have an unlimited number of business accounts.

You can flirt once a day with people, if you start dating someone you earn double experience for flirting with that one person and if you are married you can earn triple experience.

You can go to prison for crimes, and depending on the crime the time can vary and the level of security you are put in. You can offer contracts for people to bust you out if you don't want to wait however there is obviously a chance of being caught depending on the level, speed etc of the contract taker.

You can also go to hospital if you are "killed" and in this game there is no magic potion that refills your health to full. You can take some speed or possibly meth and maybe get your health up to 25% but no more than that. Your health and energy refill 5% every five minutes and stamina refills 14% every hour.

There is obviously the option to attack people, and there will be weapons and armour, strength, defense and speed etc. But I'm toying around with ajax at the minute to create a live battle system if both people are online, you know you get the chance to attack, use item or run away. Could be interesting, and am already building it in to a battle arena where you can contend against others for money, glory etc.

Also there are different houses you can buy, these affect your stamina and also you can add things on to the house like your own training gym instead of paying for a membership, kennels to keep your dogs for fighting comps, stables where you can keep and train your race horses. I'm building a race track where you can enter your horse for a fee and there are several AI horses as well, and every half an hour a race starts, you can enter your horse to race or you can bet on a horse to win.

If someone attacks you and they are on the ten most wanted for the city you are currently in (most kills overall gets you in the top ten) then you have about 10 minutes to "snitch" on them, if they get arrested you get a payout and they go to prison, but if they fail to convict then you'd better run and hide.

I'm also designing a mission system. Basically you go to a website or a bar and pick up freelancer missions to do around the normal game environment, such as pick up a briefcase in the gym in Moscow and fly it to New York between 3pm and 4pm (game time is GMT) on tuesday the 13th, but when you get there you have to fight off about 5 special agents and so on. Once the system has been made the possibilities for missions will be limitless and extensive, and unlike other games I can write several new missions a week at least to keep the game refreshing and keep it from becoming stagnant. Even create story strings that can play out over months.

I appear to have gone on quite a bit, but if anyone has any other great ideas that they think would suit this game then please tell me.

In my country, it is legal to download an mp3 of a song that you already own.
for example, i own a song, but i want it in mp3 format for my mp3 player.
it is legal to download that song.

this is exactly what i was doing using giFT on the fastTrack (kazaa network)

its quite common for anti-p2p companys to put fakes on the network,
but one German server did more than send me a fake, it also started a DDOS attack on me !!!

i rarely have any ports open, and its jus a normal home computer, so i didnt set my firewall or intrustion detection systems to detect denial of service attacks againsed me, who would want to DDOS me...

anyways, shortly after beginning the download, my CPU useage shot to 100%
and accelerated from 1.0Ghz to 2.4Ghz.

i say giFT was to blame, and ran netstat and tcpdump.
several ip addresses of the same domain were sending me SYN TCP packets on my open port.
in other words, a SYN flood distributed Denial of serivce attack.

i had to hard block this ip range in my firewall, and a few minutes later, the attack stopped.

has anti-p2p gone too far ???

Did you know, that in holland recantly, a tax was passed on MP3 players, elspecially large ones such as the iPOD.

he tax depends on the size of the storeage, but as reported on the news, the currently largest iPOD costs the american equivalent of $200 EXTRA !!!

which goes directly to the record company's !!!!

They make it illegal to download music,, But they make you pay for it anyway !!!!

Anyone want to provide clues to this, it is indeed hard, here's things that I need other people's understanding for:

The wording tells us first we must find the guest, trick or no trick?

None Shall Pass, this riddles me but what does it mean.

And then what I understand, and what could help others:

We have a form using the post method, with 3 fieldnames, two are shown and one is hidden.

user="admin" # is there also a guest user?
pass="" # this is what we want to find
id="<?php echo md5($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']); ?>" # one method of how this could be generated.

In the header we're told there's many ambushes, you're only given one chance to get this right, although depends on the verification methods order. You'll be blocked by either IP address or the MD5 encryption of the address. Now the posted information relates back to the same page. action="<?php echo $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']; ?>" quite possibly.

I can't tell if any database is being used, but there's no reason why we can't try SQL Injection on this but could this be a bit too much.

Now lets assume the SQL query

$query = "SELECT * FROM user WHERE user='{$_POST['user']}' AND pass='{$_POST['pass']}'";

There seems to be checks performed on the posted information than anything else, especially the user. Then the next check would be to check if you were banned and if not show the page, however we may not be able to continue if we have been banned. If this is indeed SQL Injection, we have another query to check if we're banned or not.

We maybe able to bypass the banned list or even better, remove it.

First things first, is solving the riddle before attempting to try anything. If you have a dynamic IP, you've got better chances. Static IP, well anonymous web proxies that support the POST and GET methods if needs be.

If anyone has any clues, they should share them.

Cheers,

MC

You are probably not so familiar with networking, else you would have no problem.
Sending files through a wifi connection is exactly like sending them through an Ethernet cable. Except that it goes far faster (about 200 times faster) through a cross-cable.
In order to get familiar with sharing files, IP addresses and so one, first try with a cable (no enkryption-like problems), send your big files.
then, put the wifi connection on, allow it in your firewalls, and try with small files.

QUOTE (minnieadkins)

Will someone tell me if this router is capable of what was discussed on this thread: http://www.astahost.com/ics-question-about...ing-t10276.html

This router is capable of "routing". That is, you connect PC's to it, either via ethernet cable or wirelessly. It then gives every connected computer an own internal IP address, and every computer can use the internet and connect to every computer in the network to for example share files. This is almost completely without any hassle, which ICS is known to have.

This looks to me like it's one of the better wireless routers on the market. I think it's a G series. Someone please help me out if they know something I don't about this router, or this company that's selling it.

From what I've heard it is a good router, above all very stable. It has also got an interesting thing, a linux based OS that you can modify and install different additions. More information on that here. One thing though. No official support by Linksys if you do that.
