Control / Monitor The Internet Activity Of A Modem Via A Computer

I don’t know whether I have described the title correctly or not, but I am going to explain the problem in detail so everyone who reads this post would get an idea of what I am trying to do. The moderators are free to alter the title if they think the altered version will suit better.

Scenario:

To make you understand what I am trying to do, I need to describe the scenario first. There is a line (basically a telephone line which also has broadband capabilities) that is connected to a modem. The modem has many ports. One for “LINE IN” for the connection described earlier. Then there are 4 ports to which DSL cables can be attached (the other end of the cable is attached to a computer for internet use). The device also has built in wifi functionality so that a computer can directly connect via wifi without the need of the aforementioned DSL cable.

And finally there are 3 to 4 computers connected to the device; some via cables and some via wifi.

What I wish to do:

The experiment I want to conduct is to put some controlling and monitoring force over the activities of the device. The idea in my mind is to find some way of passing all the incoming and outgoing traffic of the modem through a computer where all the controlling and monitoring can be done. This idea might sound simple but there are many problems associated with it. Plus I don’t know whether the passing of traffic through a computer is itself practical or not.

Currently I can’t think of the method by which the computer would connect to the modem. My best guess is that I would need additional hardware for this purpose. With the current hardware (the mode, computer and cables) it just seems impossible. I say it seems impossible because the only way to connect the modem to the computer is by wifi or lan, both of which are output of the modem. So I can monitor the internet activity of the very computer which is currently connected but not of other computers which are connected by other wires. The goal is to control and monitor the activity of all computers.

I would need guidance on the type of hardware required. My current assumption is that I would need a more advanced type of modem which has these capabilities. Furthermore, if I am to monitor the activities via a computer, I may need to dedicate a computer for this purpose. So I would definitely need some guidance on this.

The modem itself has some features for controlling its activity. I would access it by giving the address 192.168.1.1 in a browser and then I can turn on off wifi and do some other things. But I need more control over the activity for example turning off individual output ports.etc.

And there are no monitoring features available and I need to have some level of monitoring including which websites are viewed etc…

Monitoring can be illegal sometimes and most people would frown upon it. But in my case, the connection is my personal internet connection and only I use it. This whole thing is just an experiment to help me understand how modems work and how to extend their functionality…. So don’t worry about this…..

How this idea came into my mind:

I have seen some internet connections where there is an added layer of security. They would require you to sometimes install an extra software and then provide the additional username and password to use the internet. I am not sure about this but a friend of mine told me that this is done via an additional computer which is dedicated to controlling and monitoring the internet activity of all the computers connected. It is usually found in universities and colleges. But I don’t have any practical experience of seeing such a system or even authentic information about how such systems work.

So basically this whole post is based on a naïve idea derived from common talk. Any information or help is appreciated….

Quick Guide To Formatting Your Pc

Your computer is made up of several important parts, one of them being your hard disk. The hard disk is the device where all your files are methodically stored so that it can be fetched quickly & easily whenever you need it.

It also stores your "Operating System" ; Windows 7 , Windows XP , Windows 95 - 98 , Ubuntu, Linux Mint, OS X , Solaris and so on are all Operating Systems. Operating Systems help you manage your computer's resources and mainly help you use your computer. Imagine using Knowledgesutra without all those buttons and options **phew**

Your hard disk however does not merely store your data, it also stores information about your data, software you add(install) , little tid bits that help the software work… many many things are stored onto your hard disk to make sure your experience is as great as it can be.

As your hard disk ages without regular maintenance, you might face any 1 of many problems including :-

Infections in your computer that affect performance, memory & security.

Your machine feels sluggish and difficult to use.

Unnecessary tid bits , records are lying around cluttering up space and other resources

So, users often format their computers regularly to "wipe the slate clean" so to speak.

What is formatting?

Remember how I said your files are stored methodically? Hard disks don't automatically know how to do this. Formatting is the process where your hard disk is first wiped clean of all previous records. Wiped clean = all data on it is deleted and once completed , a "file system" (the structure that will help your computer store files properly / organized) is added.

Now, your hard disk is ready for use where you can add the operating system of your choice.

STEP 1 :- GETTING STARTED - KNOW YOUR COMPUTER

Software that will help you with this

Ccleaner

- Getting a list of Software

-- The painful part of formatting your computer is setting up your computer to its old working state. Without a list, you are looking at a very painstaking process because you are left wondering which software you have with you or software that you would still like to use. I usually end up discarding 5-15 applications during this process, things I add which I would have forgotten to remove or postponed the uninstallation.

- How to get a List of software added by you
-- We will be using a software called Ccleaner, the download link has been given above (To those unsure on how to install, Click No to any downloads / free toolbars.. Click Next for everything else)

-- After installation, run the program by double clicking the program icon. Navigate to the Tools -> Uninstall Section . Here , you will find all the software you have installed on your computer.

Through windows you would Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs (Uninstall a Program for Windows 7)

- List of saved Passwords

-- If you have a habit of using the "save Password" "Remember Password" feature of your browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, Maxthon, Opera, Safari & so on) . Here are a few softwares that can help you export your stored passwords

Firefox - Password Exporter
Multi Browser Support(Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera.)
- WebBrowserPassView

Optionally you can also save your history in case there are links you need. BrowsingHistoryView (Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer & Safari)

- List of hardware components & their drivers

-- Like your hard disk, your other components also require some help in order to function properly. These programs are called "drivers" they help operate your all hardware including your mouse, keyboard, motherboard and so on.

-- It is always recommended that you directly download these drivers from the maker's website since the driver version on your CD would probably be outdated. Also, download before the format in case your internet does not work after the formatting (It usually does not since the "Network drivers" are missing)

-- To get your computer's complete system information, we are going to use "Speccy" . There is another one called Belarc Advisor but I prefer Speccy since it is pretty easy to understand

-- Install and run the software, note down the Motherboard, Graphics & Audio model names / numbers. Graphics & Audio model name / numbers show only if you have an external card installed. Most commonly, if you search this number in google with the word driver, you will get links from where you can download these drivers. Something like "XYZ Model Number 2343453 driver"

STEP 2 :- BACKING UP YOUR FILES

Firstly, let us remember that the C drive on Windows is only for Windows and not for data storage, if you have so far been using it for storing data, make sure to not use it for storing software, files and so on. If you are using programs like Photoshop, your brushes and so on will have to be copied by you.

Personally, I back up my files by hand picking the files I need to make sure I copy only the files I recognize. Ccleaner has a duplicate file finder in case you want to make sure your computer is not filled with copies of the same stuff

For those looking for a quick and automated back up process, you can do it using AOMEI DATA BACKUPPER . It allows you to backup either the complete hard disk or simply the partitions that need backing up. I like this tool because it offers Incremental backups and restoration options.

STEP 3 :- FORMATING THE HARD DISK

When upgrading to Windows 7 , you need to remember that your previous version of Windows is stored in a folder of its own. It might be useful to others but I find this to be pointless, I prefer having everything erased off the hard disk before installing a new operating system on it. With older versions of Windows, you can format the hard disk

OR

You can use DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) . DBAN wil delete EVERYTHING from your Hard Disk for good. You need to first download the software and then add (burn) it onto a CD using CDBurnerXP . Please use only CDBurnerXP since the developer of DBAN has recommended this.

STEP 4 :- POP IN YOUR WINDOWS CD AND TWIDDLE THUMBS UNTIL DONE

STEP 5 :- REINSTALL DRIVERS , SOFTWARES AND BACKUPS

I wrote this article for those attempting their first format I tried as much as I could to keep it as novice friendly as I could.. If you have questions, shoot away

How To Make A Private Message System.

Hey!

Today, I am going to teach you how to make a Private Message (PM) script in PHP.

Before we start, I want to tell you what you should know, and what files we will create.
Then we will continue with the codes, and descriptions. I would like if you learned something from this tutorial.
If you find any errors (Even if I spell something wrong), I would like you to post it in this thread.

What you should know:

You should know HTML. Just a bit (forms, and maybe a little design if you would like that).
You should know much about PHP and Mysql.
You should know how to create a login-script, because you will need it for this tutorial.
if you don't know how to create one, you can check a very simple login-script tutorial that I made some time ago:
How to create a login-script

Now.. Lets start with the Mysql table, or? Thanks to Vujsa I could make this one

messages.SQL

CREATE TABLE `messages` (

?>

simple isn't it?
The first things we do are very simple.
We start the session.
We require the database.php file (the database.php is the file where the mysql connections and stuff is stored. you should know how to created such a file. if you don't know, i'll create one in the end of this tutorial, only for you )
then we create a variable for the set session, to make it easier to write.
Then we create some variables.
the $get_messages is the variable where the message id is stored.
the $get_messages2 is the variable where all the messageinfo is stored.
Then we create a simple for-loop that will show all the messages that is sent to the user that is logged in(check w3schools or google or whatever, if you don't know what that is.).
the first thing we do here is:
Check if the message is read.
If it isn't, the loop will add "(new)" after the message title. else, it will just show the message title.
The last thing we do is:
Add 2 buttons.
byethost - not a great host all in all to be honest. Although the options they offer are pretty great (basically unlimited everything), it's just not worth it. Occasionaly your pages will be directed to their sponsors. I tried stackoverlfow but very general level of help and mostly snarky and sarcastic remarks and less guidance towards to the solutions.

Typing Speed Stuck At 60 Wpm For Some Time... How To Improve

First of all, I didn't know where to put this topic, so @yordan if you feel that this is the wrong place, please feel free to move it to what seems correct place to you..

So the thing is that I have been touch typing for quite some time. Before starting to learn touch typing, I used "hunt and peck" style and I was OK with that (around 25 WPM).. After I learned touch typing, my speed was increasing at a constant rate with time. It did take time to reach 30 wpm but after that my muscles got used to the location of the keys and the speed improvement was fast.

But after I hit the 60 WPM mark (many months back), the speed improvement just ceased to happen and I am stuck at 60 WPM. Actually the improvement from 50 WPM to 60 WPM had bigger share of reduction of errors as compared to actual speed improvement. So I might be correct in saying that somehow, my fingers have ceased to improve the speed of their movement.

I know that 60 WPM is not bad. Actually it is quite good especially in my field (medicine and surgery) where computer literacy is not that high. But I want to improve the speed. My goal is to touch the 100 wpm mark.

I did some research on google to find out what is the average typing speed. It turned out to be between 40 and 50. So 60 wpm is above average but I know that 100 wpm is quite achievable.

My assumption is that there must be something that I am doing wrong, because of which the speed improvement has ceased to happen. I tried to find out the flaws in my typing and so far I have found two...

The first flaw in my typing is the lack of use of SHIFT key of the right side. Whenever I need to type capital letters, I would only press the shift key of left side. Even when I have to type alphabets that are typed with left hand like a, e, z, q. What I do is I press the left shift key with my left little finger and then press the alphabets (of the left side) with other fingers of the left hand. I am so used to this approach that the accuracy rate is more than 90 percent even with this bizarre method. But what I know for certain is that it reduces my typing speed.
The second flaw in my typing is pressing B key with right index finger instead of left. This might be a cause of trouble in some select situations but I don’t even feel that I am typing wrong, and maybe this flaw can be overlooked.
So what do you folks thing I need to do (in addition to correcting the above mentioned flaws) to increase my typing speed upto 100 WPM.

Bioshock Infinite Review

It all started with Irrational Games' System Shock... Needless to say, we've come a long way since:

I didn't get into this series until System Shock 2 circa 2001, but I've been a fan ever since. Bioshock, System Shock 2's spiritual successor, was awesome, but sadly felt very "console-ized." While the graphics were stunning, the game suffered from terrible bugs due to the fact that the PC version was a port of the Console version, and that they added a very strict activation system that allowed you, the buyer, to only install it on, I believe it was 3 different systems. I think a later patch fixed that, but it still pisses me off they did it in the first place.

Bioshock then had a sequel, which I played for about an hour before I got bored and quit. When Bioshock Infinite was announced, I had renewed hope that the game would again be awesome, and thankfully, I was right.

Bioshock Infinite opens very similar to the first Bioshock... Everything is done completely in first person mode, which is awesome as it gives you the feeling like you ARE the character, Booker DeWitt. You start out on a rowboat with 2 other people. They have a very odd discussion that makes sense after you play the game, but basically they drop you off at a lighthouse in the middle of the ocean. A disturbing note is on the door "Bring us the girl and wipe away the debt, this is your last chance!"

As Booker, it is your job to find a girl named Elizabeth and bring her back to New York, telling her anything she wants to hear as long as you bring her back. The opening of the game does not really clarify what this "debt" is, but in several dream-like sequences, it is inferred that you have a gambling debt, as there are many horse racing tickets on your desk.

After a very dark and gray opening sequence, you are transported to the wonderful land of Columbia, a city that floats in the sky. You work your way through this Heaven-like paradise for awhile, which acts as a very natural tutorial, as everyone is very nice to you and you have nothing to worry about, but there is a constant sense of wrongness about the place.

I won't spoil anything, but after awhile you quickly discover Columbia's secrets, and you are then in trouble as you keep forcing your way through to find Elizabeth. Again, I really don't want to spoil it, but I must say, Elizabeth is probably one of the most memorable and life-filled video game characters I've "met" since Alyx Vance in the Half Life series.

Elizabeth becomes your companion, and she is NOT annoying like most escort missions in other games. She stays the hell out of the way during firefights, and is actually helpful. As you continue your journey with her, you can't help but feel for her innocence and its loss as she sees you gun down hundreds of assailants... I truly feel remose the fact that eventually she starts helping you as you defend yourself.

Elizabeth is special. She has the ability to create portals into other, parallel universes similar to what you would see on an episode of Fringe. She will help you by pulling in objects from other universes such as med-kits, guns, and turrets. Combined with your ability to use what are called "Vapors" which are basically just Plasmids (as seen in Bioshock), and your guns, you and Elizabeth are a force to be reckoned with.

The story takes you on a journey of self-discovery and wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey... stuff. The plot can be confusing at times, because of the parallel universes, half the time I had no idea where or when the hell we were...

The game takes VERY creepy turns and is a roller coaster of the mind. By the time you are done, you may be shaking your head in confusion, but after reading more in forums, you may learn more about what the whole thing was about.

Music, sound effects, gameplay, graphics. Everything and all were top notch. Never had any crashes and the game didn't really feel like a "consolized" game. The characters are memorable, and there's never a moment that doesn't fully emmerse you into this universe... and many others

Get this, and play it.

Has the operators of the KnowledgeSutra and AstaHost considered archiving the forum threads on their sites like archive.astahost.com and restarting the forums. Most of the post make me feel like I am walking through a ghost town. I think refreshing the site would help maybe to bring in some fresh blood. Not that I am trying to tell anyone what to do.

Remove Operating System(S) From Boot Menu

I recently had the privilege of formatting 3 machines at my home and my parents' . I like to format my machine now and then but the family decided to upgrade their Operating Systems from the old Windows XP Professional to Windows 7

But, being family, they decided to get some hack to try reloading the OS first rather than wait for me :/ Well, he managed to install Windows 7 , but the boot menu had a little more to say.. There was a broken Windows XP Setup and good old "EARLIER VERSION OF WINDOWS"

This means that he took the shortcut method of letting Windows 7 manage things rather than format the HDD. So what happens is, that every time I boot the machine, Instead of automatically loading Windows 7 , it shows me

1. Earlier Version of Windows

2. Windows Professional XP Setup

3. Windows 7

Now, of course, we want Windows 7 to load automatically instead of seeing the Boot Menu each time. In my scenario, I used Command Prompt (bcdedit) to remove the entries but I don't recommend this to regular / novice users.

The easiest method to configure startup and edit the boot.ini in a Windows 7 machine (Remember, windows 7 does not have a boot.ini, only XP and older have it, Windows 7 instead has bootmhgr.dll) is through a software called EasyBCD

I wish I had screenshots

You can download the free version of EasyBCD from their website by entering your name and email address - here

When you run the software, it shows you information about your current boot menu. To remove entries for Windows XP (edit boot.ini) , you need to click Tools -> Edit Legacy Entries . Remove all the lines mentioning XP and save!

Once you reboot, you will not be plagued by the boot Menu options.

This software is really multi purpose, it will let you add / delete addtional Operating Systems to your Boot options, prioritize them so that you can directly load one OS instead of having to select it each time on boot. Definitely deserves 5 stars

Is There A Way To Transfer Money From Paypal To Moneybookers?

Hello everyone,

I'm going to do business with a foreign company that offered me two methods of payments; one, through PayPal, and the other by a cheque sent to me. I'd much rather NOT get paid by cheques since they're an absolute hassle; they need time to arrive, time to clear, and then time to deposit.

I live in Egypt and, unfortunately, PayPal doesn't support payments to it. Naturally, I can make a PayPal account with false information; everyone can, I suppose. The thing is, the account won't get verified.

So my question now is, does anyone know of a service that can transfer money from an unverified PayPal to a MoneyBookers.com account? I searched for such a service, but I have to admit, the few ones I found don't look too promising, and I don't feel I could trust them.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance .

Seo Tips

The following are some simple tips you can follow to add more visibility and boost your trafic and SE rankings to your site:

Make sure that your site is complete and with unique and rich content, after that submit it to Google, Yahoo, MSN and ASK.com. Additionaly consider to submit it to high PR web and open directories, and to some social bookmarking site like del.icio.us.

Create two sitemaps for your site, one in HTML format to show to your visitors and another one to submit to Google, Yahoo, MSN and ASK.com prefered in XML format or in sitemap format.

Avoid duplicate content and don't create multiple pages, sub-domains, domains or sites with different domain names but the same content.

Make your TITLE (60-80 characters) and ALT tags descriptive, simple and keyword rich. Your Meta tag description should be 160-180 characters, and your Keywords meta tag must be 15-20 words maximum, also make sure that they are relevant and contained in your content.

Optimize pages with Headings (H1, H2, H3..) containing your primary keywords, use text instead of images in your content, links and important subjects. Optimize your link text and make sure it is descriptive and keyword rich, when possible try to make it match the header text on the linked page. Also never use hidden text and links.

Validate your CSS and HTML and check for errors and broken links.

Make sure you use SEO friendly URLs if your site contains dynamic pages because spiders have difficulty indexing dynamic pages.

Use a Robots.txt file to manage and control search engine spiders that index your site. You can allow and disallow spiders and choose directories you want to be crawled and indexed.

Avoid links to bad sites like phishing, hacker, crack, gambling, porn or scam sites and don't attempt to join in link schemes, excessive reciprocal or exchanging links. Do not buy or sell links. All of these will greatly affect your rankings.

Best regards,

App Review: Kik

I would like to review an called Kik today. Put out by a company called Kik Interactive Inc, out of Canada.

Kik is a messaging app simular to the old school BlackBerry Messenger. It allows you to know that the message was delivered by showing a "D" and when the message is read it shows an "R". Like messengers online you can view when the person is typing so you will not interrupt. The multi-platform give you the options to talk to android , ios, nokia, blackberry, and windows users. They are working on integrating apps into the kik messenger. Its seems like a beta feature and there is not a lot to choose from at this time.

I have personally been using this app with coworkers and friends and think it is amazing. We can group message to let every know about a party, meeting, and were we are going for lunch.

Give it a try by directing your phone to kik.com

Failing Drive Recovery Tools

my brother gave me his 2.5" Portable 1 Tera byte hard drive to copy some stuff to and it took sooo long probably 30 mins to copy 1.5 GB of stuff...

when copying from the drive to the computer some files (which were there before i got the drive) would report can't read from source file...

so I'm guessing the drive is starting if not already failing...

is there any good tools that can help me recover whatever data is recoverable from the drive? or a tool to help me analyze the functioning state of the drive?

Introducing Cloudlinux Based Hosting

Hello Members,

I m pleased to announce a new type of hosting which has benefits of shared as well as virtual Private Servers - we have named it "Logic Cloud" Plan.. thanks to a Cloudlinux OS. Logic Cloud accounts are setup on a Special Operating System that emulates a Virtual Environment around each account with dedicated Resources and Processor Level Separation like a Virtual Private Server.

Basically - Since more of the Abuse in Shared Hosting happens from users hosted on the System, This new type of shared hosting makes accounts very secure and stable. Just like any other Virtual Servers, Logic Cloud accounts also get dedicated Resources called Units. The following is 1 Unit sufficient for a Mid Size Wordpress Website with sufficient plugins.

15 GB Space
500 GB Bandwidth
512 MB Ram
15% CPU Power
100 concurrent user limit

Up to 3 more units may be Added during Order or at Later Stage to upgrade. We are releasing these Plans for $9.91 per month and Ofcourse, Forum Members can always by it for Free using myCents.

Because this Technology is not entirely a Virtual Server platform, I have put this package under the Shared Hosting Group..or rather We prefer to call it a special type of Shared Hosting.

Order Page: https://www.xistosup...illing/cart.php

Generation Gap

What is a generation gap?? According to the Oxford Dictionary it is a difference in attitudes between people of different generations. The key word here is "ATTITUDES". Now attitude is A way of thinking or feeling about someone or something. Thus this gives us a clearer picture of what a generation gap means and when it occurs." A generation gap occurs when older & younger people don't understand each other because of their difference in opinion, experience and nature". I for one feel that this difference is definitely existing in our society today. Let me explain.

Most of today's youth are deeply influenced by the growing reach of western standards and culture. To them it seems as the "Global" standards and the "In " thing to do. Everything about them today is influenced by the west. Be it Music, Fashion, Behavior, Trends, Clothing EVERYTHING. This I must add is good to a certain extent but beyond a certain point...it leads to differences between the generations. Earlier when the extent of the reach of the west was just growing, people did well to avoid it. It is in our nature to go for something we believe is true and will make us a better person. It may occur but is also leading to many rifts in today's society. "It is one of nature's ways that we often feel closer to distant generation then to the generation immediately preceding us"

The next thing that I feel further aggravates the situation is today's education system. Earlier the importance to academics was not very important and there was not much competition. focus was on the all round development of a person. Sports, ECA, everything played a role. but today the focus has been shifted to academics. Learning by rote is very common. A student gives more time to academics. This leads to lesser time of interaction between parents and children. Parents too have a role to play in this by pushing the child beyond his limits and causing a "burnout" effectively making things worse. A recent study by a leading institute states that the amount of time spent with each other has effectively decreased by 75% over the last five decades.

We today live in a smart world. The internet and technology has also played its role. That a child spends more time on the computer is too obvious to dispute is obvious and I will not go further. But that a child's social skills suffer is a very alarming situation. Today we spend time chatting with friends and relatives seven seas across may seem a good thing, but we are also losing the same amount of time that could have been used for interacting with a person personally. Thus social skills also suffer. Even a telephone conversation is far better for improving social skills. Thus we are not able to express ourselves properly. This further bridges the divide.

Another difference that plays a role is the difference in upbringing. Earlier parents were authorative and children felt a bit scared to interact with their parents. Respect was invincible. Till date my mom is quite scared to speak to my "Nanu" (Grand father). But today the situation is more friendly. Children treat their parents like friends. This is another thing influenced by the west. Parents may or may not realize this due to the difference in upbringing and it is often treated as rude behavior and that today's children lack respect. In some cases it is even blamed on the school where the child studies." People often talk of the younger generation as if they never had anything to do with it". This further divides the gap.

There are a few more things that can be blamed. Lack of spirituality, The media etc. which play their part in their own way.

When I heard of this topic, like most of you would have I ran a Google search. But I didn't search for points or arguments, Instead I decided to let Google decide the truth. I ran two searches. One was Generation gap exists, the other Generation gap does not exist. Both were in quotes mind you. The result was quite convincing. For the former I got 474 results while for the latter just 19. Thus the writing is on the wall, The gap out there is present and increasing. PERIOD.

This is the exact copy of my opinion as put forward in a debate competition

Turn based web game in PHP - session handling issue

Turn based web game in PHP - session handling issueI Want To Create A PHP Text Based Web Game
Hi all!I am working on a turn based web game in PHP5.This is pretty simple game, a kind of board game, two people join a "session" and they play until one of them wins.My problem in nutshell:User A and User B play a game.User A finished his turnA request will be sent to the server to perform necessary operations. So far so good..Now it is time for User B to move..But how could I notify User B about this?I mean, now the server has to communicate with the other user, the one that is inactive, and not the one who initiated the request

I know that this could be implemented using some kind of periodic AJAX call to check whether the opponent finished his turn etc, but such a thing generates a huge number of requests.Isn't there a better way to solve this? I'm thinking of something like this:User A's turn ends ----> Server saves his score ----> Server contacts User B ----> User B's turn gets started. Is this possible using PHP and comet-style requests? Or is there a better way?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!-question by Tommy

Hackers (They're Not What Most People Think)

One of the most egregiously abused words in recent years has been the word hacker. The term hacker was coined in the 1950s at MIT's Tech Model Railroad Club (http://tmrc.mit.edu/hackers-ref.html). The term was used to describe members of the club who were are exceptionally clever at problem solving. When MIT got a computer, a subset of the model train club also became part of the computer club, and they brought the term hacker with them to describe programmers who were exceptionally clever and playful at solving problems using computers.

The abuse of the term began in the mid-1980s with a misunderstanding by a journalist writing about computer security-breaking who interviewed the hackers at MIT's Artficial Intelligence Lab. The writer wrongly attributed the term hacker to computer security breaking, and published it in a paper. Then the mainstream media picked this up and it has perpetually misused the term ever since.

The unfortunate consequence of this confusion is the inadvertent vilification of all people who have ever been given the honorific of hacker. This is why intelligent people are fighting back by using the word correctly. Even Mark Zuckerberg uses the word correctly, as he demonstrated in his “hacker way” manifesto to investors before his company went public.

A clever and playful chef can be referred to as a “food hacker.”

A clever and playful writer can be referred to as a “word hacker.”

A computer security-breaker is generally neither clever nor playful (although there are exceptions), so it's incorect to call him a hacker. He is more properly referred to as a cracker (think “safe-crackers” who crack safes).

To refer to crackers as hackers is to overgeneralize. It would be like calling all NASCAR drivers Asian just because you saw one or two Asian NASCAR drivers. Imagine a young racing fan seeing Dale Earnhardt and saying, Look, mama! It's an Asian!

Crysis 3 Review (With Large Images)

Crysis 3 marks the end to a 7 year old trilogy. Crytek has always been bleeding edge in terms of graphics and is probably the reason why nVidia and ATI are still in business. Sadly, with consoles being so popular, the graphics are nowhere near as good as they could be due to game developers having to make their games reverse compatible with hardware from 2006

Crysis 3 pushes the envelope with graphics and is the best looking in the series, but it is kind of sad that the game from 2007, Crysis, set on its highest graphics settings still competes with Crysis 3 on its highest settings.

In terms of gameplay, I was sad. Crysis 2 was very "consolized" for a generation of Call of Duty gamers and Crysis 3 is identical. Same UI and gameplay mechanics. Trying to use the quick suit function change using Mouse Button 3 is annoying because it was built for a console analog stick... So when I press Middle Mouse Button, and try to move the cursor over to Cloak, there is a delay or it flat out doesn't move the cursor, leaving me vulnerable.... In the original Made-For-PC Crysis, this was smooth, and I could push my mouse in the direction of which function I wanted and it went there instantly. This allowed me to pull off those kick ass moves they always show the main character doing in the game trailers...

The story itself is very cliche and doesn't feel epic at all till near the end. Then they ramp up the scope of how epic it is and then the game is over.

For example... In Crysis 1, you started by jumping out of an airplane, which demonstrated the "OOOOOH I CAN SEE THE WHOLE ISLAND" aspect of the graphics, which was HUGE back then. Then your entire squad started getting murdered one by one and you had no idea what was going on.

In Crysis 2, you started in a damaged submarine and you watched your entire squad get gunned down in front of your face.
Then you had the "OOOOH I FEEL LIKE I AM REALLY IN NEW YORK CITY OMG THAT BUILDING JUST BLEW UP!!!"

Crysis 3 starts off on an empty boat.

In the rain.

There is no exploration. If I backtrack and jump off the other side of the boat, there is a big invisible wall stopping me from exploring.

From the very start, you are on a linear path through the game, totally eliminating the exploration aspect that made the series famous.

They also completely ruin immersion by constantly having your character movement keys locked during in-game cutscenes.... In the first Crysis, if something huge was happening, it would have a small text pop up saying "To view, hit Enter" and your camera would zoom in on whatever it was. You could still move and ignore whatever it was, though... This was great because it never ruined immersion with your character and you felt like YOU were the main character. In Crysis 3, they are constantly forcing you to sit through cutscenes (which are THANKFULLY skippable with the Enter key) as your character does a bunch of stuff, like walking through a door. There are a couple instances of QTE (quick time events) that force you to press Spacebar multiple times, but they are not frustrating like other QTE's are that force you to mash multiple buttons in squence like Dance Dance Revolution.... I have no problem with pressing space bar multple times to break free, this is acceptable and good use of QTE's.

One of my biggest problems is that the A.I. has super vision. I can be out of sight behind a car, and if I uncloak for more than a second, your threat detector jumps up half way, and you hear a guard say "What was that?!" This soon leads to a firefight with no energy to protect myself, which usually leads to death and reloading a checkpoint. The unrealistic A.I. ruins it for me. I can't pull off any stealth kills because any nearby guards will instantly know where I am and start lobbing grenades in my general direction, even if I killed a guy with a silent bow and arrow and was nowhere to be seen. Tall grass no longer hides you like it had since Far Cry (2004). There is no real way to play stealth-fully here.

The characters you interact with as you play are annoying. From the very beginning of the story, they are constantly bashing you because you are apparently not all human due to the suit you are wearing. They don't trust you and constantly remind you of that, even though you do NOTHING but help them and show there is no reason not to trust you. From the beginning, you are constantly asking them and warning them about the "Alpha Ceph." They blow you off and tell you that you are crazy, up until, TA-DA, the Alpha Ceph shows up. Then they are all over themselves begging you for your help. By then, I wouldn't give em a drop of piss because I was so sick of their sarcasm. By the last 3/4 of the game, they finally started becoming more likeable, but by then it was too late.

One of the other game mechanics is "Hacking"

Hacking is basically watching the dot bounce up and down until it gets into the specified area and you press Enter. If you miss it, you lose energy till you have to start over... This is very basic and sort of a pain in the ass. I feel like they could have done better, but as-is, it's not too horrible. It more breaks the flow of combat, but it helps if you want to hack a turret to shoot at enemies while you sneak around.

I have not tried multiplayer yet, as I'm already done with this game and not in the mood anymore.

Overall, definitely not worth $60. Crysis took me forever to beat due to the open world exploration, long plot, and good gameplay and replayability. Crysis 2 took me 12 hours to beat and I never picked it up again. Crysis 3 took me about 6 hours to beat, including all the reloading I had to do from dying from the A.I super vision. Overall, on an easy setting, you could beat this game in 3-4 hours and not miss anything.

By the time the price comes down on this, you should be able to get a decent graphics card to handle it, so do yourself a favor and wait a year or two so you can get the most bang for your buck on the graphics.

Get Far Cry 3 instead.

Configuring The Extra Buttons On A Gaming Mouse

I know I ask a lot of questions.... (@yordan).... but I like asking questions more than answering them so please bear with me.....

So I have this gaming mouse that has 6 extra buttons than a traditional mouse. Its made by a local company and its known by the name Dany challenger g6000 gaming mouse (link). I do play games but not those FPSs that would require a sophisticated gaming mouse. The main purpose of buying this mouse was so that i can configure the extra keys for my normal activities in the windows.

To be more specific, I wanted the extra buttons to work for functions like cut, copy, paste, forward, back etc. Unlike the more expensive gaming mice, this mouse doesn't have its own software to configure the extra keys for custom functions. And by default the buttons work for some strange (and useless) things that i never need. For instance of the two buttons that are meant to be pressed by the thumb, the front one works for opening the homepage. So if I am working on this astahost post, and press this button, it would instantly take me to the home page of the browser. This is quite useless (and possibly damaging too). The button behind the describe button does some strange thing that I don't exactly understand. When I click it, it would select the entire line of text, and sometimes the entire paragraph so I think that it works like double click or probably triple click.

On the top surface of the mouse are 4 buttons. One of these is the DPI button that changes the dpi mode of the mouse. This one works just fine. However the other three don't. You can see those buttons in the picture on the link provided above.

So what I would like to do is know about some solution that would make it possible for me to configure these extra buttons for custom functions of my liking.

I googled the issue, and the first result was about the software "x-mouse button control". It appeared to be the exact thing that I was looking for so I went on to download the software and then intalled it. But the UI was rather strange and I couldn't understand it enough to configure the mouse buttons. Moreover, it didn't recognize all the mouse buttons so eventually, I ended up uninstalling the software immediately.

So a software which I can use to configure the extra buttons of my mouse for custom functions of my likings with do for me.......

Anybody........!
