Hi,
I've been looking for decent forum software and I came up with phpBB and SMF. I installed phpBB with Categories Hierarchy and I a,m thinking to use SMF. Do you think I should get SMF or stick with phpBB? I realy don't know...

Hi, I highly recommend using SimpleMachines Forum. The main reason for this is because they seem to have better security than phpBB. If you look around online you will see that phpBB has been hacked many times before. From what I heard, the updates they provide to patch up the security holes are not that fast either. SimpleMachines on the other hand, have less security holes and it usually gets patched up pretty quickly if any are found.

I would say, play around with both of them and see which one you like better. Both have "hacks" or mods as they call them to give your forum enhanced features. phpBB most likely has more, but SMF has more and more mods added as time goes by.

In terms of speed though, I find SimpleMachines a bit quicker smile.gif

Ah, thanks. Just the answer I was looking for.
I have heard that phpBB has been hacked a lot and SMF seems to have more 'supported' features built in. Categories Heirarchy has changed my phpBB installation quite a lot, and there isn't any mods compatitable.
I think I'll try SimpleMachines.

phpbb is the equivelant of Windows. It's FILLED with security holes and the patches just bring more. hmm... sounds familiar...

Use SMF. Or try a different flavor of board. MyBB, XMB, MercuryBoard... and the list goes on and on... don't be afraid to try something new!

Yeah, SMF and phpBB are the ones that fit my needs. XMB, MyBB, etc are just too hard to intergrate with my site and the mods are mostly for older versions of the forum. SMF and phpBB are the ones I like best. Anyways, I've found SimpleMachines easier to intergrate with my site. I'm now using TinyPortal!

My forum/website is now located at http://www.smn.uni.cc

Thanks for all the advice,

Another recommendation for SMF.

It's far more configurable and has fewer security holes than phpBB. Also check out the many mods available. I particularly like the ability of SMF to notify you of updates to the software and then update it directly. Very useful.

Yeah, I like the built in mod installer - less time to install and less errors after installing!

sparx, phpBB does have features to see if you're using the latest version. I didn't know there was a feature to update direct, though, for SMF!

Anyway, I like the name too, it most ressembles mine...

The default SMF layout and ones I have seen on many forums well and truly suck! (yeah I'm honest).

But if you know how to fix that problem and get yourself around all the options and features then it is definitely worth a try.

Hell if you have the time and patience try making your own forum software, it can be quite fun, rewarding and yes, equally frustrating at the same time biggrin.gif

WeaponX is right ( phpbb less security )
but phpbb have more abilities and addons and more user than sf
if you wonder about phpbb security search it in google to learn how to protect it tongue.gif

eh, I prefer Quicksilver Forums, an official branch off MercuryBoard. Well, I prefer it because it's fast, and it's liteweight. That's also why I joined the development team.
