After looking through this forum, I noticed nobody had commented about PC-BSD, which is in version 1.2 based on FreeBSD kernel 6.1. I have had some very good success with this system, admittedly using vmware-workstation, and I didn't even have to install it, as they provide a downloadable hard file that works with vmware-workstation as well as vmware-player. The GUI Desktop is KDE 3.5.3 and the site for further information is here
One overrriding reason to use this system is that they use PBI files to install applications so you don't have to worry about dependencies and in all it is more stable than Ubuntu Dapper Drake, which I have also used. |

Yes, the BSD operating system has been refined by PCBSD and it's ok I think. However, there are still 10k things they still have to fix. First of all, they need to recompile the HP DeskJet drivers properly so that it can print over Windows networks PROPERLY. Another thing, although it's not PCBSD's fault but FreeBSD's is that my Micro$oft mouse doesn't work on it and it's been pissing me off.
This is the main reason why I will not move to BSD until these issues are resolved. xboxrulz |

Man I like the BSD platform....days back around 1.5 years ago Yaho was using BSD ( exactly speaking free BSD ) to provide servioces so no comments about its atbility and reliability. Also, installation of external programs r4eally is much easier.
But what I see in it is a bad installation interface. Again it is bulky and hardware compatibility is really BAD compared to others. Most MS hardware dont work with it. Upgrading is not easy and a thousand problems with it. I tried installing it on my PC and was killed with a completely bad hard disk...nothing was left...the installation corrupted my windows. ne of my friends was able to do so but the MUTE system is no on'e s choice so he too quit. |

I just posted about it in some other thread. I really feel that in a year or so this might be the ultimate *nix desktop for the average computer user. It still has some bugs though. I'm waiting for vers. 2 to come out before I keep it permanently installed on my PC next to my favorite Linux distro (which changes all the time).

I am just so curious, I have not tried both PCBSD anf FREE BSD. How does it differ in the 'visual' way? Which is more preferrable? Does PCBSD looks and feels good than FREE BSD?

Why don't you look for some screenshots if the looks are the only things that matter to you ?
