I personally have slow dial up myself so the first time i installed it it had to update for days. Fortunatly when my computer harddrive broke and i was left gameless or patchless i came up with an idea...download all the files you need onto a pc with broadband and then just copy them with a gig stick or dvd and put them into the steam folder where all the other HL2 stuff is...Hopefully that helped.

For all the complaining people do about Steam having to connect to the Internet, I do like the fact that once you validate your legal copy that you don't need the CD anymore to play it. That, and it's easy to get mods up and working in it.
Of course, I have a broadband connection, so I don't have to worry about stuff like 56kbps |
