Actually it really depends on what kind of editing capabilities you need. I'm on a Mac so of course I would say either FCP or FCE is really good (even iMovie HD is cool), but on the PC even there are many different types of programs. For Video usually they say that Adobe Premiere is the standard, which means it really does do anything and everything you want it to do, but if all you need is to piece a video together, splice parts, add subtitles, rearrange and add music, you would have a whole lot of other options open to you which do the job fine and don't require that amount of cost. For example, I dabble in a little home-video editing for events and such and I feel that Premiere is a little overkill (good to have, but overkill nevertheless) so I used Ulead Videostudio.

As far as i know there isn't a trial version of any of these... ask around if any of your friends have it and try it out first before buying?

I am trying to choose between Adobe Premiere Pro and Sony Vegas 5 + DVD Production Suite.  Their both priced at $699. I want to know who is better.

I have not tried Vegas 5, but I have used Vegas 2 and I now use 6. It is the best video program in my opinion. It has a lot of great features that adobe after effects has and it is a non linear editing program. Try a demo version

I'd like to try out a video editing program...
so which one is the best?                                                                                            One of these two?                                                                                                      I have no idea about that.
If you know a good one,                                                                                        please tell me! thanks!

I'd recommend trying the demo versions of the programs you are interested in. All companies should have them. I know Vegas 6.0 is out.
Whether you have a Mac or PC, it shouldn't matter. They are both good platforms. Final Cut is good. Vegas is good. (I never liked the Premiere- they version I used was linear and they tried to make it like cutting film- waste of time.)
If you have a PC and like the PC, cool. As for the spyware etc... I recommend, if you are doing media (Audio or Video) having an internet computer and your media computer. It will keep it safe. That's what I have been doing for the last 8 years.
Enjoy!

I personaly use Combustion and Sony Vegas both.
Combustion works fine for me.
Sony Vegas is pretty easy and you do basic stuff on it and it works faster than Adobe premier. tongue.gif

I'd never buy any sony software. sony computer stuff is aweful. i should know my pc is a sony. sonicstage [the music software] is horrible. Their equivant of moviemaker crash everytime it runs [just like movie maker] i do have a lite version of premier that is use and i think it is great. the full version would be even better.

Well not to worry, Sony bought Vegas Video.. it was developed by Sonic Foundry, and it's a great sfotware... altough i haven't proved Adobe's Premier.. but in Audio, i use Sony's Acid Pro to mix and Adobe's Audition to record.. try the trial.. in my contry, trial are mora than that thanks' to emule (i'm not sugesting anything!)

have used both Premiere and Sony Vegas, but I graviate towards Premiere. They both have fairly simillar software features and I think price-wise Vegas is cheaper. Also, Vegas is a bit easier to use (to me, anyway) than Premiere...esp. if you're new to video editing. When I started using Premiere it took me forever to figure stuff out (and I'm still learning everytime I use it, haha), but i've used it for so long Vegas seemed a little too foreign for me. But that's my opinion..

i work as an editor and in professional studios the standard is Avid. I reckon its products might be too expensive for home editing, though there is one great exeption: avid dv xpress free, which u can download on the website for.. euh.. free. I never used it but i heard good things about it. It might just do what you need.

When i started in this bussiness i used adobe premiere.. though it is more basic than avid software, it does quite a lot.
