I don't know if you are still trying to find a free PIM but I know a very good one.
It is PIM Xtreme and you can find it at http://dgtalize.com It is Open Source licensed under GNU GPL, and that means it is free. You can handle contacts, calendar, events, to-do lists, and even financial stuff. I'm not sure about sync but you can export to iCalendar format, which it's supported by Google Calendar.
