I've used several ftp cleints in Linux and Windows, and my opinion is that, despite it tending to screw up and crash a lot, CoreFTP is one of the best for windows. It's quick and simple and does the job. I rate it 7.5/10. For linux, FireFTP seems the easiest to install and use, also on it's favour is that it integrates with firefox, hence the name, it's simple but works well. I rate FireFTP 8/10.

My personal favorite ftp client is WinSCP. It is free and has all the functionality I desire: drag and drop, text editor, session storage...

SmartFTP is good. Although, I like CuteFTP better. SmartFTP is too slow when uploading files. It's unbelievable.

Right now I'm using Core FTP Lite and I like it. In the past I have used Cute FTP and a couple of others which I have forgot the name to. But in my opinion Core FTP Lite is better than Cute FTP, or at least comes with more ease for me to use.

My favorite FTP client is Filezilla. Its not loaded with the extreme security features of Cute FTP. Although, its quite lightweight and does what is required - Upload/Download files. CHMODing is also supported. Being open source anybody can download the source code and extend/customize it to his/her own needs.

I once decided to create an FTP client of my own and in the process learned quite a bit of the protocol. It was initially built in VB and then ported to .NET. The application could only download & resume files. It lacked most of the features of a generic FTP client. It was sort of built by need of a program to download a huge file from a site without having to worry about bad shutdowns that corrupted the file. None of the download managers could recover the file from that point. So, I decided to build one of my own. The application could recover the broken downloads and that too without corrupting the file.

One day I plan to build a complete FTP program and hopefully get people to vote it as the best or atleast their favorite, in here.
