Hi,

I read somewhere that I can use Gmail as a SMTP server.
SMTP server: smtp.google.com
E-mail: yourname@gmail.com
Password: password of your e-mail
Is it really true that you can Gmail set as an SMTP server.

How to use Gmail as your SMTP server
One of the little-known freebies Gmail offers is a portable SMTP server to send mail from any network for any email address.

Travellers who use their ISP's SMTP server to send mail with their email program (like Thunderbird or Outlook Express) can find themselves in a bind if they're on another network away from home, like at a coffee shop, airport or visiting relatives. But if you've got a free Gmail account (get one here) you can use Google's SMTP server to send mail through Thunderbird from you@example.com Update: Google rewrites the from address to your Gmail address.. How to set it up, after the jump:

  1. In your email client software, under Outgoing mail, set the SMTP server to smtp.google.com.
  2. Set the your username is yourgooglemailname@gmail.com and make sure "Use username and password" is checked.
  3. Also check off "TLS" under "Use secure connection."

This paper, as well as a lot of other ones, were obtained by goggling whit the words "gmail + smtp"
Regards
Yordan

yes, of course. No problem concerning PHPBB forums. PHPBB forum is a configuration on the server hosting the forum. SMTP or standard webmail is a configuration on your client PC.

For instance, you can read your mail with POP or SMTP, depending on whether you are on your own PC or on another PC, at work or in a cybercafe for instance.

On the Dutch phpbb forum they say that Gmail is one of the mail servers that doesn't support the phpbb forums SMTP function. sad.gif

Cheers,

I have a question related to this subject:

I had tried using this method a long time ago; it does work with no problems. But when I tried to send myself a test email, I found that the FROM field contains my GMail's email address, not the the email I specified for the account I sent the test email from! For example:

I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird as my email client. I set up an account for the email address NeoTeemZ@anywhere.com . I set the SMTP configuration to my GMail's email NeoTeemZ@gmail.com . Now, if I try to send an email to anyone, they see that NeoTeemZ@gmail.com sent that email message, not my intended anywhere.com domain.

Does that happen with everyone? Has anyone perhaps found a way to overcome this?

Thankfully, I don't have to worry about that anymore after using Google Apps and setting it up with my own domain name. But still, who knows, if there's a solution to that problem, it might come in handy someday.

I recently created a phpbb forum. I found that you are supposed to be able to use Gmail as SMTP. However, when I tried it, it did not work at all. So, I really do not know if you can use Gmail for SMTP. If anyone want's to help me with this, I will greatly appreciate it!

I would like to be sure that there is no misunderstanding.
gmail will act as a SMTP server for your pc, in order to read your mail as a gmail user.
As owner of the astahost account, you create a phpbb forum, which uses astahost as mail server.
If phpbb sends a mail to a Microsoft Hotmail address, astahost will send the mail, and hotmail will act as SMTP serverver for that guy.
If phpbb sends a mail to a gmail address, the gmail user will be able to choose between the google webmail server (reading his mail with his web browser) ; or the gmail user may be use gmail SMTP server, asking th SMTP server to handle this mail until his PC.
Please tell me if this clarifies your question, or if I'm completely wrong.
Regards
Yordan

SMTP server: smtp.google.com
user: yourname@gmail.com (or just user)
Password: password

Above setup works for me, I am using it with my email software for quite long time.

But do not to send bulk emails with google smtp which may yield bounce back or spam complain, if google gets complain report they will ban your email without warning.

For using the google smtp in the forum you have to pay attention for these things liste below:

1. Give the members on your forum the choice of not choosing topic reply notice, even they have agreed to receive it give them choice to cancel it any time they want.
2. Try to get a function to validate the emails when the users sign up, some spammers just sign with a face email and when your board send them welcome email it will be bounced back, large number of bounced email will be flagged as spam.
