I would suggest www.yellbox.com. It's free, it only puts a little link in that nobody will notice.

Features:

- Fast and easy to set up.
- No programming knowledge necessary, just put a little piece of HTML in your page's sourcecode.
- Doesn't take any webspace.
- No PHP or MySQL required.
- Very customisable
- Filters "bad" words and replace them.
- Lots of smileys
- IP-ban

This one looks nice. The only thing is, some of the features are only available through paid membership... sad.gif
But still, it's cool. You may just see one on my site soon!

Definitely review the code before adding it to your website/myspace. Those usually put a banner or pop-up on your site to generate revenue. Or else it wouldn't be free!

Most of the time it's just deletable code, so keep an eye out.

I used to use this AJAX powered one, but I seem to have forgotten what it was...

If someone could find some AJAX powered and remotely hosted shoutboxes then that would be awsome!

As stated on here there's all kinds of free shoutboxes available on the net. I found one called tagbox that fit my needs. It's simple and doesn't really take much to implement.

It depends on what you really need. I would advise you searching through some of the links here and decide what fits your needs. If you really want practice with php/ajax or something I would definately recommend writing your own. You'll get a lot more out of it, and learn a lot more than implementing someone else's code.

I'm sure there are tons of sites that offer free shout boxes, and so here's a few:

http://www.myshoutbox.com
http://www.yellbox.com - offers a swear word filter, ip address banning, remotely hosted as well, I believe
http://www.shoutmix.com - this one's remotely hosted
http://www.theshoutbox.com - a shoutbox in an iframe, really easy to embed
http://php.resourceindex.com/Complete_Scripts/Chat/Shoutbox/ - written in php, there's more than one on that page to choose from
http://www.getfreesofts.com/script/761/22198/Shout_box.html - once again remotely hosted
http://www.oggix.com
http://cbox.ws
http://www.hotscripts.com/Detailed/63213.html - this one you have to host yourself, it uses a text file to store 'shouts'; uses flash and php
http://www.hotscripts.com/Detailed/62663.html - another shoutbox that you have to host yourself, allows you to ban ips, filter profanity, etc.
http://www.hotscripts.com/Detailed/26787.html - a php shoutbox. You can decide if you want to use a Mysql database to store 'shouts' or just a plain text file.
http://www.hotscripts.com/Detailed/26032.html - php once again. Allows bbcode as well.
http://www.hotscripts.com/Detailed/61600.html - php shoutbox; similar to the ones described before.
http://www.hotscripts.com/Detailed/53557.html - has css support!
http://www.hotscripts.com/Detailed/58761.html - a php mysql shoutbox
http://www.free-tagboard.com - another remotely hosted shout box
http://www.phptagboard.com - a php tagboard

If you want more, you can always just Google
http://www.google.com/search?q=free+tagboard or
http://www.google.com/search?q=free+shoutbox

Or you can go to http://www.hotscripts.com/ for more shoutboxes that you can host on your own server.

You should definately learn to make your OWN shoutbox. It is quite easy actually. Go to W3Schools and learn some PHP and MySQL. Then you will create a MySQL database with a table called "shoutbox". I am still working on mine and it is rolling along quite nicely.

Give it a try! It may not be feature-rich, but you will learn something.
