Last week my system crashed and i couldnt get hold of an office CD. I used openoffice as an alternative.I felt it was pretty bad...functionality apart..it took ages to load on my freshly formatted system. The features were good and it can be considered as an alternative for those who cant afford MS office...

Open Office takes much to long to get started, when I start Excel or Word, the program is ready immediately. But that's only one point, there's other ponts that make me prefer Microsoft Office.
Anyway, if we discuss this topic "without talking about the companies that makes the program or prices", then I would like to answer with a question: If somebody would give you a car for free, and leaves you the choice between a Maserati and a Volkswagen, which one would you choose? I guess most of us DID NOT really pay the license fee for MS Office, so this comparison with the free cars might not be sooo stupid. GreetingZ |

I have a legal copy of MS Office, and Open Office.
And i use OpenOffice.org Reasons... 1) OpenOffice and MS Office are compatable, and do the same thing / look the same. 2) My Windows Machine only has 6 gigs of hard disk space, MS Office take a whole GIG, Open Office takes about 300 megs.. (you can literally smell the absence of the bloat) 3) OO.o works on all common platforms. I wonder how many of the people who voted MS Office have ever used OO.o ? I think its a common miss assumption that free things arnt as good than the things you pay for, especially when they are so expensive, some governments cant even afford them. But take OpenBSD, A free (as in free beer, and free speach) literally embarrases All other major operating systems on securety. QUOTE(http://openBSD.org) Only one remote hole in the default install, in more than 8 years!

I wonder if the OpenBSD developers tape all wires to walls, put trunking around the cables, dress in bubble wrap, they do take security seriously.
I am still a firm believer in OpenOffice, and ive just removed Microsoft Office (yesterday) I seriously believe I can live without it, ill maybe have some trouble with presentations, because Ive never really found a free alternative that was as good as PowerPoint, although flash may do okay, but I really did like PowerPoint. |

All I want to know is can you create edit and fill out PDF forms with Open Office, or do you have to use that expensive Adobe PDF product, that I wont buy/

I'm more better off with Microsoft Office. It seems much more for me than that. I'd like to contrast the two a lot more though, but they are very alike still. They both are wonderful and have their basics working, and that's good enough for me. The only problem I have is that sometimes it takes awhile to load up the first time after booting up the computer. But after that it's very clean and easy to use, much better than Microsoft words and stuff of course. So in the end I'm with Microsoft Office, but Open Office is not too far behind in my opinion.
