what Grafitti said sounds like a probability, but when the USB doesn't have enough power, it should fail completely and should NOT run at all. Usually, in this case, you plug it in to a wall socket, provided that most EHDDs requires them.

Unlocker is indeed the solution. I have INCD (by Nero) installed that claimed my LaCie external HD. Great tip!
