You could also terminate some useless processes that are currently running on your system. That way, your computer would use less memory and would run faster. Well, you could always turn on those processes again if you need them or if better yet, terminate and uninstall them if they are just plain useless.

QUOTE(chickenside @ Sep 12 2004, 07:37 AM) Interesting. I just defrag all the time. But I heard there is a way to devote hard drive space to become RAM. Is this true? By default , Windows will automatically use hard drive space for extra memory if window needs more Ram memory and you hardware RAM is full. This process is called virtual memory process. It was invented by DEC more than a decade ago to speed up the computers with little amount of RAM. You may be able to reduce the amount of hard drive allocated for virtual memory and therefore speed up the computer when you have a lot of RAM. It takes more time to access memory in the hard drive. Some programs was able to teak windows virtual memory settings. I have learned the hard way that those programs will be messed up if you upgrade your windows OS. They would actually slow down your computer. I think with the cost of RAM is going down, the best way is to buy more RAM. Depending on you applications, most of the time Windows XP will run fast if you have 512 Megs of memory. |

I donno watever u guys are speaking about ..
i heard about the softwares u were speaking and adding hardwares ... but i can not afford adding hardware to my laptop .. nor can i afford removing some instances that i do not need .. the laptops allways have a bunch of small applications which can not be stopped or .. which can just be removed ... infact the best way to speed up ur PC is to switch it off |

More data is cached when reading from the disk, so reading in files is faster. Does anyone know other ways to speed up my computer, as some of the stuff i do on it is really slow (Pentium II 350mHz w/Windows 98 SE) daniel |

You mentioned that more data is cached when reading from the disk and thus will be faster. Some questions popped up in my mind as I just studied file management systerm. What I know is that you still have a fixed amout of cache in your computer, so caching more data doesn't make any sense as some other data in the cache will have to be removed from the cache for thie 'more data' to be written to the cache. |
