As i said, www.w00tage.com its not blocked by bess and its easy to use.
You can follow any of the site links but not any directly inputed URL's and you cant use a web browser search engine but its still good. |

So I got this proxy site up on my website. Even though it got me to myspace.com, I wasn't able to login. Is there a good open-source file that allows this to happen? Maybe a site that allows people to login. I know there are a few but they've all been blocked.

This will never end.
I've had it at my school for years, and as time goes on, they keep adding more and more to the block list. Recently we got a new service- I'm not sure if it's still N2H2 or not, but it's called Smartfilter. It's even worse... In the past, I found some gems for bypassing the filter, but word eventually got around (and as you probably know, the more people using something, the faster it is detected.) It's really a pain. I don't believe in censorship this radical. Example: I tried to go to the PETA (animal rights group) website, where you can learn about the torture of animals by food corporations. This is education. It's the truth. Unfortunately, it was blocked by the pigheads at N2H2. All we can do is whine about this. There's no help if you can't arrange one of those proxies through a private computer. Oh well... misery loves company. |

Well, since you're not exactly doing some illegal, couldn't you just ask the system admin? Of course you could spend some time looking for unblocked proxies, but if all else fails and you're not doing something furtive...go bother them. And in the mean time, I suppose you can also tell them to look through their list of blocked sites and see how many of them are silly or pathetic.
In reality...I don't use my school's library computers that much; mostly just to print out assignments that I forgot or don't want to print at home. But my school has a second computer lab for those taking programming classes...and by gods are those annoying. We can't check our email; we can't view tutorials (school related) other than the ones hosted locally. I keep on thinking about using proxies...but then they're all blocked, and getting caught means getting a horrible grade in the class. This post has been edited by Arbitrary: Oct 13 2006, 11:32 PM |

I agree, the fact that tax dollars invested in education are being wasted on school internet. we onky get a half service and some of the sites that really matter are blocked. today we went back to school in south austalia and not to my surprise my favorite proxy(www.w00tage.com) is filtered. This is a harsh move because only three people were using it and we were using it for good. |

I'm going though the same problem here at my school. However my admins are smart, blocking every site they can. Also you need to use cgi based proxys to log into a forum or password based website. Most likely the one that wouldnt let you log in was php based. My school also sees titles and if there black listed the site gets block within a few seconds. However you have to be smarter and strip the title and encrypt the url.
Anywho ill put a few down that got blocked from remote destop. CODE polysolve.com vtunnel.com atunnel.com btunnel.com ctunnel.com dtunnel.com vpntunnel.net safeForWork.net backfox.com safelizard.com safehazard.com mathtunnel.com calculatepie.com englishtunnel.com geotunnel.com newbackdoor.com usatunnel.com vmathpie.com All of these are made by the same two people and the credit should all go to Gabriel Ramuglia and "TheWird" enjoy and good luck getting though This post has been edited by ahender: Oct 16 2006, 08:41 AM |

Yeah, I have the same problem at my school. It's really stupid! I mean, I tried to check for my latest comics (using Comic Alert!, a great site!) and the filter tagged Penny Arcade as a gaming-related site, and as such I wasn't able to view it. I mean, I know it's not really an education site or whatever - but students need their break every once in a while (especially me, being severely ADD and undiagnosed for a couple of years), and it doesn't harm anyone at all! It' just browsing the web!
I think I'll set up a proxy on my home computer for those special occasions and leave it open when I know I'm going to need it. It's not like anyone will notice I'm using a proxy. And it's not like the computers in our library actually work. God dammit, it's times like this I hate living in Israel, with our extremely low education budget. :\ |

QUOTE but students need their break every once in a while That's right, but this break should be going outside and have some minutes of fresh air. Which is still quite free and healthy. The university could imagine not having to buy computers and pay for bandwidth for people who want to play. If you want to play, you are supposed to buy your own computer and have your own internet account, or go to a cybercafe. Public school money has to go precisely where it's necessary for students education, and I imagine that paying some extra teochers should be a better investment than buying internet bandwidth for playing games or going to comics sites "almost not" concerned by extra-school activity. |

You are right, games and fun are for your own time and money. But in this war to stop people from acessing the wrong stuff the casualties are some infomation sites and other important things. When does a site stop being educational. austiniskoge is right PETA should not be blocked and google images should not be blocked all in all the admis should not realy on a corporate company for our education choices.
