QUOTE How does one find out how fast they can type? I used the speed-meter with my keyboard training software. However, it should be better if all of us could use the same speedmeter. I just measured my speed with http://www.typingtest.com/test/default.asp I was disappointed finding only 78 wpm (4 errors, net speed 74WPM) Maybe all of us should start with this test, so we have the same reference ? |

That's a pretty cool site. Guess I'm not really all that fast in typing, especially stuff that is very boring and monotonous. Here's my score:
QUOTE - Test Name: Strategic Alliances with Competitors - Date: 2006-03-31 18:20 - Test Time: 01:00 - Gross Speed: 70 WPM - Errors: 5 - Accuracy: 92% - NET SPEED: 65 WPM Anyone else? |

That's a pretty cool site. Guess I'm not really all that fast in typing, especially stuff that is very boring and monotonous. Here's my score: Anyone else? That site is good, and I think we should use it to show our speeds, I had to download the Java plugin though and install it for my browser because I've just recently installed Fedora Core 5 and did not have java installed. To make this informative here's how you'd install Java for Firefox 1.5+ on Fedora Core 5. First download the Java plugin from Sun's site, clicking on the Install Missing Plugin bar that appears and then clicking on Manual install will take you to the site. Download the self-extracting RPM (anywhere in your home directory would do). Once downloaded open up a terminal and browse to where it is then do: CODE chmod +x jre-1_5_0_06-linux-i586-rpm.bin su -c "./jre*.bin" cd /usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.1/plugins su -c "ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_06/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so" Then refresh or restart firefox. Here's my results of only doing it for 1minute, if it were longer I might have made errors: (grayscale image, stripped out colours to make it smaller) [img=http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/8241/mctypetest12qx.th.png] CODE Results: Test name Strategic Alliances with Competitors Gross Speed 86 WPM Errors 0 Words Net Speed 86 WPM Accuracy 100% I am impressed with my score as I've seem to accomplish 1 more word, but I'm still going to say I'm averaging 85 WPM, maybe near the mid year and end, I'll redo another test from that site and see if I've improved. Thanks for that site, it's excellent. Cheers, MC |

When I was in school I got used to typing fast without ever looking at the screen untill I complete typing the full stuff from the resource material placed by the keyboard, so everytime while I type in the school labs I always got those baffled 'stares'. I am not sure how fast I am but I know I type faster than most people.
Of late with not much typing to do, I have got slower and also errors have started to creep in. Added to it is that nowadays you are more used to the sms way of typing, so whenever you are typing in formal english as this forum requires....sheess..I am getting tired! |

Actually there used to be a job classification of Production Typist, and these people were expected to type at least 120 words per minute with zeo mistakes. When in my stupid keyboarding class there was a woman there taking a course required by her employer for a raise and a promotion, who violated all the rules about posture and all that but her speed was 135 words per minute, she had been a typist for 20 years as a professional, there used to also be certifications given for keypunch operators to keypunch IBM cards for programming computers.
When in my earlier years in college 1972 my COBOL programs were written on IBM cards that had to be key punched, usually the programmer would hand a programming sheet to the keypunch operator who would punch out his program and hand back the packet of cards for insertion to the card reader which would run the program, and you should never drop your cards and get them messed up or you would have to go through them one at a time and read them and see what sheet they belonged to or have the cards marked with a felt pen with a number on them in case of such a disaster. |

QUOTE I thought i was reasonably fast. You are right. Reasonable fast means, as fast as you need. I type just as fast as people are telling me the things which have to be written in my text. So, my speed is fast for my own purposes, as long as I don't have to say "please slow down, I can't type so fast". Some people type far slower than myself, because they simply don't need to go faster. Some other people have to type faster than me, they simply learned how to at a typing school during a whole week. ----------------- By the way, I just verifyed my scores in my keyboard teaching program. My speed is 346 keystokes per minute. This is the real typing speed. The number of words/minutes depends from how many keystokes a word is worth. Is this fast or not ? Depends on where you are compared to an average. "Normal" people are supposed able to type 2 keystokes per second, which means 120 keystokes per minute.
