I have two Gmail accounts (one is for school website stuff since I am a student webmaster and the other is my personal account) but somehow my second account which is far newer got the web based chat and I'm still waiting for my personal account to get it!
From a test today after school with a friend, we tested it out but I found a weird bug too... sometimes when you pop-out and pop back in, the pop-in never appears and there is a blinking cursor right in the middle of the page... lo and behold, I could type though not see anything except the cursor move. I forget if it was in IE or Firefox because the lab I was in has IE right on the desktop, and Firefox in Start > Browsers > Firefox and that is usually too much clicking for me... plus the computers have Deep Freeze on them so the install of Firefox is 1.0.8, not very good! Back on subject, I found it to be quite useful, but I'm a little worried about what the service provider will do since content filtering is enabled by N2H2... it blocks AIM, MSN and Yahoo requests, but I HOPE that Gmail doesn't get blocked because of this. A year ago, Gmail login box was blocked (yes, it was... but the rest of the Gmail site wasn't... just the login) so it was impossible to access mail but then the folks at Secure Computing (makers of Bess/N2H2) updated it to allow it... hopefully they don't block it! Well, I better be off to bed as it is 10:30 PM here and I've got more school tomorrow and I have to deal with a whole lot of stuff! I'll post more later! [N]F |

MS^E, stop advertising Google Desktop in this thread!!!
Yay, I just logged in to Gmail, and I was faced with this screen: ![]() That indicates that I can now use Google Chat! So I clicked the "Got to my Inbox" button and checked out what it looks like. Unfortunately, the Quick Contacts box can't be dragged-and-dropped like the xml boxes in Personalized Homepage, but there are 2 places that you can place it in. Go to Settings in the top right corner of the page, then Chat, and there will be an option where you can choose whether it should go above the Labels box or below it. I chose below because I use the labels very often. One thing I don't like is that now, my inbox page looks too crowded. It's becoming hard to find an empty space on that page. By the way, has anyone noticed that the font size of the Labels box got bigger? It can't be switched back even if I choose to view in "standard without chat". |

Oh yeah I read that already - from a news flash in Google Desktop itself - talk about IRONY
But that thing happens ONLY if you enable the Search Across Computers feature. Otherwise you're completely safe. |

Yeah I just noticed it the other day and tried using it yesterday and I really like it. Google truly is the innovater when it comes to such things, I would never go back to hotmail or any other search engine simply because in all regards google is without a doubt the fastest.

Holy cosmos! You should have seen the look on my face when I logged into my GMail account. I was away on vacation for 15 days, and that meant I had no internet connection for that time. I log into my GMail account, and volia! I have a chat option there.
The one pro I really liked about this service is that I need not download any stuff, as it runs off the web-browser. I always had a thing for standalone stuffs, and this was really a treat. I already have hundreds of lines of chat logs filed in my GMail with most of my friends. Now, being able to log ones chat is the neat stuff. I mean, I have had many times, where someone would have mentioned some important stuff on the chat, and I had forgotten to take it down. But, having it logged, all I need to do is do a search. And searching is what Google is at its best. |

Has anyone else noticed this? (Don't answer right now, wait for my next sentence...) When you have both Gmail's page open and Google Talk running, Gmail Chat will take over Talk, and Talk will no longer be functioning.
I started a chat with my friend on the Gmail page, and after a long time, I remembered I was waiting for his reply, but I didn't hear any notification sound that Talk makes. Then I went back to the Gmail tab and saw that he's already sent a few lines to me. I wanted to investigate this, so I closed the chat box inside Gmail, and I called Talk up from the tray, and I sent a line to him. No reply came back from Talk, so I checked the Gmail page, and I discovered that Gmail has popped the chat box out again, and my friend was talking to me. It seems that the line I sent through Talk didn't go through. Is it the same for you guys too? |
