I would call my OS Microapple... a mixture of Windows and Macintosh... how pimp would that be???!!!

I dunno but my OS would be built using Firefox as the explorer , pure all my code, open source, non-*nix and non-win and non-apple just purely mine and if I can do that I would code all the programs I needed. Surely some of my friends would help me aswell.

Well, this may sound like a backwards step (starting it out simple)
But it will be "non-*nix, non-win, and non-apple" (the last two are kind of "duh")
It will be a modified version of Bell Labs' Plan 9 for the 68000.
The computer it will be run on is one I am building, which is actually using a 68010..
but either way...it will be quite unlike some things ever seen..

I would say an ideal OS is when the OS is completely cutomized... you can change every and anything on the OS or switch it back to default...

My goal is to change the visual interface of the OS to something out of this world.. I dont like the fact that windows are all the same and nothing is different...

Although you could use softwares like windows blinds or change the windows shell, but still, you are really limited to what you could really do though... I guess the only way is to program your own, but thatll take a lifetime to do for me.. haha

My ideal OS would be something like AmigaOS but for PC. The people developing AROS are essentially doing this, though, so it's only a matter of time before my wish is a full reality. Heck, AROS already boots and has a working GUI... Just needs USB and sound support...

In reality, how difficult would it be to create your own OS completely from scratch? I've been considering this for a long time, and am curious as to what it would take to pull this off...

What my OS would be is that it is as customized as Linux, works w/ all UNIX commands and that it's POSIX standardized. Another thing is that it will have a GUI faster and looks better than Mac OS X. Of course it will run on my favourite type of processor: the IBM G5 Processor, but of course I won't be as protective as Apple and make it open.

Realistically, constructing an OS from scratch is far more complex and daunting than you think. You need to be incredibly affluent and profficient in Assembly Language, C++ and/or in other powerful programming languages.

You don't just snap your fingers and voila, you have an OS! It involves a lot of hard work, persistence, patience, and possibly outside assistance from others. I'm not trying to come out sounding like a know-it-all nor am I trying to discourage you from partaking in this task, I'm just trying to make it clear - it's not a piece of cake.

Hell, people have a hard time creating paint programs and text editors let alone OSs. Don't think that I'm trying to put your programming skills into question either, because I don't know where your skill level is at honestly. If you pull it off, all the more power to you. Okay, I've said enough.

Ya... it is a little bit of work. Windows is like how many 10's of millions of lines of code? If I could just snap my fingers and have an OS on a cd on the desk in front of me, I would want it to be open source, have a completely encrypted file system, a built in perfect heuristic antivirus, and have a beautiful and extremely usable and speedy GUI. It should be able to emulate windows API's and open EXE files flawlessly as well as be able to run linux apps.
