this is my first tutorial, i hope people will like it.
it's basically a way to find out how old the content in a specific website is, it works with javascript.This is a very short tutorial, because it's very simple.
You just type the javascript in the adressbar:
javascript:alert(document.lastModified) en press enter. you will get:


ofcourse, you can put it on your webpage too, but i myself don't like prompts too much.

i hope you will find this tutorial useful, and would like all kinds of comments. Even the negative responses, but please, be subtile, and don't slap me with a wet fish, (you know what i mean, Nils,sorry about that )


btw: the prompt i used was Google's last modified.

Often i find myself reading documentation and tutorials on the internet that doesnt hve a date, doesnt have a software version number, and i dont know how dated or usefull the information is.

once i was trying to get a modem driver to work with a 2.6 kernel.
the instrctions i found were very well writtem, but turned out to be for the 2.0 kernel, and therefore useless.

this will be very usefull to me!

Neat tip. It should come in handy from time to time.
Does it still work on pages generated on-the-fly? Or just give the date and time that the page was requested.
Still a cool trick none the less.

This would make a great plug-in button for Maxthon!!! Typing in the address bar every time would be a bit of a hassle. But if there was a button on your toolbar that you could click to get the info, that would be awesome!

I'm going to take this to the Maxthon user forums and see if it can be done. It may already be there or someone may already be working on it so I'll find out.

my dear friend... this is not java... its javascript. These two things are totally different and not related to each other... lot of guys get confused between the two.

cryptonx may have confused java and javascript but I think he's right when he says it's not gonna work with all sites. When I tried it, the popup box just gave me the date & time that the webpage downloaded to my computer (in other words, the current time). Is this due to the site or my browser or something else?

I just realized that it did the same thing for me, only giving me the date and time of when it downloaded to my computer. And I already posted in the Maxthon forums. Grrr.

Is there something that can be changed in the code to give the ACTUAL last modified info???

yeah, i tried it on some webpages ive written, and it always flashes up current time.

maybe i should have tested this more before i approved it

To partially answer my own question, I got a plugin from the Maxthon forum that I will try later today when I'm on my regular computer. If the results bear any relevancy to this thread, I'll post them later.
