I've been watching this Webcast on Novell's website about the "merger" between Microsuck and Novell. If you haven't realized it, it's Microsuck's attempt to spread it's evil monopolist ways into a GOOD company. The entire thing is BS. Microsoft interested in Open Source software (SuSE linux)??? NO WAY! Not only can't Steve Ballmer say "Free software" (see this slashdot article: http://it.slashdot.org/it/06/11/13/1432221.shtml) but he can't even pronounce "SuSE". He says about 5 variations..

Also, SuSE Enterprise Linux is going to have "subscriptions" so you get support from both NOVELL and MICROSOFT and they're supposed to be working on a way to run MS apps on Linux sort of like on Mac, you know, running IE without WINE.

Plus, if you listen to the Webcast, hint Novell & Microsoft's favorite keywords: proprietary, software patent, licensing, patents, open source, subscriptions.

Great, my life dream: to soon start pirating Linux. I never thought I'd see the day.

You can see the brainwas.....err... webcast here: http://www.novell.com/linux/microsoft/webcast.html

WARNING: It's filled with BS. It makes me mad that Microsoft, a company that HATES open source, is now trying to develop NEXT to it. dry.gif

It makes me want to create my own linux distro, if I only knew how to do such a thing.

They're not merging, they only reached an agreement.

They are still rivals, and Steve Ballmer's answer to computing is still Windows.

Novell is a strange company. All (OK - near all) it products slowly gone. So i hope SUSE Linux will be exeption. Hope die last.

I was first very suprised about their announcement. Why would Microsoft want to do something like that...

Well after giving it some thought I see there's two alternatives:

1. Microsoft now sees open source as a real threat and they want to secure bases. If Linux based operating systems at some point take significant piece out of MS's market, they can at least in someway benefit from it. That it see like MS office or games for Linuxes...

2. They smell another way to do money. They give little to Novell and expect to get lots. They want to spread their dominance to Linux realm too.

My friend made a quite funny comment about this partnership... He wondered when Novell will integrate IE to a "Linux" kernel and SuSE will start leaking like Windows.

I understand why SuSE people feel betrayed and disappointed. But it's not the end of the world if you lose SuSE to Microsoft, there's plenty of other distros and MS can't take over them all.

well, I don't think Microsoft would take over Novell. They are still competitors but they have just came together in an agreement.
