I didnt find a suitable catagory for this tutorial so posting it out here, Mods please find a suitable place for this if i am wrong.

Allright, lets get started.

Almost everyone now owns a Nokia, and out of that almost 70% use SymbianOS phones (S60). You can change the themes the wallpapers etc on your phone, but i assume that a few of you would like to change only the Font. Nokia uses its default font called the NokiaSans. This is hard coded and set in the ROM of your phone, so that whenever we format the phone, the same font is taken and used. Many of you might have seen that sometimes some themes come with different Fonts, well those fonts are installed the same way i am about to tell you, but its done automatically behind an installer.

Enough Chit-Chat, Lets change Fonts biggrin.gif ...

First let me list out the things you would need for this tweak:
1) FExplorer
2) Easy GDR Creater ( To Make your Own Fonts ) [ See Link Below ]
3) FontRemover ( To Uninstall the Fonts, and get back to Default ) [ See Link Below ]
4) Brains laugh.gif

>> DOWNLOAD ZIP FILE << Easy GDR Creater.exe , FontRemover.sis & Test Font

STEP 1 :
Make shure you download the latest stable build of FExplorer. Its NO virus and millions of Symbian users use this piece of software. It is essential if you need to take a peek or do a few changes ( cut/paste/copy ) between folders that you cant normally see by default.

STEP 2 :
Send the file FontRemover.sis to your phone ( via bluetooth, Infrared or Cable ). Install the file. After installation open the program, It should ask if you want to delete the Font or not, hit YES. It should then ask you to reboot, DO NOT reboot.

STEP 3 :
Install Easy GDR Creater on your PC. Start the program. I dont know what language this is but just assuming its Thai. Dont worry. After you have the program open, you need to select the font location, just click on the ????? (5 Question Marks) beside the text box that says "TTF Font" , select the font and hit ok. INCASE this dosent work on some PCs then you have to manually type in the font location.
eg: C:\Documents and Settings\Dhanesh\Desktop\times.TTF ( Times New Roman )
C:\Documents and Settings\Dhanesh\Desktop\arailbi.TTF ( Arial Bold Italic )
NOTE: you can find the ACTUAL name of the font by dragging and dropping it on your desktop. Remember to drop the font back in the fonts folder !!

After you are done selecting the font, hit the next button ?????? ( 6 question marks ) and you will be able to see a preview of the font you just selected smile.gif

You can change the Size / Unicode-ASCII / Symbol-Unicode options to suit your needs. The OTHER tabs on the top are for other window options on the phone. For instance the Text messaging font, the Menu font, the options font etc. There isnt a full help provided on this, but if you set your mind and hang in and play around a bit with this program, I bet you would know how it works. When you make changes in each and every tab in Easy GDR Creater, the programs compiles the changes and saves it in 1 GDR file.

After you are ready, hit Compile to GDR and save the .GDR file.

STEP 4 :
Now send this .GDR font file that you created to your phone. Open FExplorer and go to C:\system and create a folder named as "fonts" so your path should look this way:
C:\system\fonts
Now go back to the Mailbox ( in FExplorer ) and find your .GDR font. Cut and Paste it in C:\system\fonts , so your path would look like this C:\system\fonts\times.GDR

STEP 5 :
Exit FExplorer and NOW Reboot your phone. ( remember: no reboot after you remove the font with fontremover :: Step 2 )

You have successfully changed the font on your S60 phone smile.gif

Any doubts or questions would be welcome, I believe there is only one tutorial on this topic on the net, I made my part to make it easier to understand and with LOADS of changes in it ( How to use GDR Creater ). Credit goes to the person who first found this tweak.

Will post more tutorials in future on mobile tweaks, sorry if there are any mistakes in this one, because this is the very first time i am ever writing a tutorial so please give me feedbacks and question, i'd be glad to answer everyone.

Regards
Dhanesh.

Ok first off ..
* Did you follow Step 2 ? It says No reboot even if the software asks for it.
* Did you make mordern.sis your self ? If no .. as i assume its a .sis installer file which you have downloaded off the internet. (err .. untrusted source). I wouldent trust a .sis file unless i am shure about it.

No harm done .. Heres what you do ..

1) Restart your Phone. (Just do it wink.gif)
2) Uninstall the Font Remover App (If you have installed)
3) Go to c:\System\Apps\Fontremover folder (if you have installed in Phone Memory) or e:\System\Apps\Fontremover (if you installed on Memory Card)
4) Delete the Fontremover folder (if exists) with any file that exists in it too.
5) Restart.
6) Download and Send the FontRemover.sis file i have uploaded >> HERE << to your phone.
7) Install the FontRemover.sis file on your phone as you would normally do BUT make shure that you install it in PHONE MEMORY.
8) Start FontRemover and when prompted to remove the font say OK and REBOOT.

This is the normal procedure to remove a messy font install through a .sis file. Please make shure that you DONOT install fonts that are included with an installer .sis smile.gif

If you still are having problems, i would suggest a slightly brutal and long but effective method smile.gif lol ( no not formatting ).

Dhanesh.

You need to Install FontRemover to the Phone Memory. And my tutorial was for .GDR files that you create yourself and not for .sis files. You installed a .sis file which was downloaded off the internet (i.e untrusted source) , possibility is that it might have installed the font with a virus too (cause it was an installer file).

Its hard to tell you all possibilities for a virus infected phone, but a few can be:
- Calling Credits Lowering without calling anyone.
- SMS being sent without your attention.
- Eating up LOADS of battery ( thats like you charge the phone and the phone switches off in 3 hrs or more approx with no usage )
- Your phone slowing down while accessing the menu or programs etc.

I would suggest you get a good Antivirus ( I never thought i'd say this one day .. lol ) for Nokia S60 Phones. Check for viruses first then proceed with the following:
- Install FontRemover on Phone Memory.
- Run the program and hit "yes" to remove the font and "yes" again to "reboot".

See if this works .. if not .. then i'd suggest you back up ur contacts by saving em on ur sim or take em on our computer .. or just do a full back up with Nokia PC Suit including sms pictures etc and format with the following code ..
*#7370#
Default password is 12345 .. or if you changed the password type in that password and it will clean format the phone and bring it back to as it was when u first bought it ..

I am sorry cause this is how far i can go to help you in this case, since your file was not a .GDR file that YOU created .. there is always a risk of virus when you use .sis installers (Unless the provider is trustworthy and easily approachable like me tongue.gif). I'll do a little experiment on my phone .. if it works i'll let you know and give you the results and tell ou how to do it too .. till then please do the above ..

Regards
Dhanesh.

1. Run FExplorer
2. Goto C:\System\Fonts
3. Rename 'Fonts' folder to other name (e.g. Fonts1)
4. Delete the files inside the folder
5. Reboot your phone

The font change i mentioned earlier was tester on Firmware Versions 5.03.08 or lower, Since you just mentioned that the firmware is updated to 6.03 .. i guess i might have to update mine too. Once done, i'll try it out and let you know about the changes.

About the Font Changing part, well it should change the font for everything because if ur removing a system font and adding one of your own, the OS has no choice but to use the font thats present in the Fonts Folder. Hope you went according to the tutorial correctly. If you made any mistakes then use the uninstaller and remove the font, and try installing it again. For Fexplorer, i think he has embedded the font into the program, many do that for their own reasons.

Regards
Dhanesh.

Hello everyone
This is my first post. I found a tutorial at Tech[dot]Blog for changing Fonts on Nokia S60 3rd Edition mobile device. My question is are the names of these fonts same across all Nokia S60 mobile devices??

nosnr60.ttf = Nokia Sans S60 Regular
nssb60.ttf = Nokia Sans S60 SemiBold
nstsb60.ttf = Nokia Sans S60 TitleSmBd S60
S60ZDIGI.ttf = Series 60 ZDigi

Can someone shed more light on the default fonts??
