I feel stupid for asking this but I can’t figure out how to use file manager. How do you open folders and view the file in it? When I click on a certain folder the options does not include opening it. And can you upload file from the file manager? I’ve been using FTP to manage my files so far.

Here's my advice to you- Use web2ftp.com if you want a web-based FTP service.

I had trouble with the built-in stuff too, so I googled "free web based FTP" and came up with web2ftp. It's really easy and simple. You can open and close and navigate really easy. Don't bother with cPanel for uploading and that kind of stuff. It's too slow and frustrating.

Really, use that website. Here's a link. Go check it out! just try it once to see if you like it.

As suggested by austiniskoge you can go for some other software. But if you want to use the cPanel's File Manager, and are facing the problem of not being able to open directories, then here is the solution.

You need to click on the folder icon (that is to the left of the filename) and not the filename itself to open it.

I know it is that simple and even I felt like a bummer when I was trying to crawl around in the begining when I got my AstaHost account.

Really nice !
I never used the file manager in cpanel (because I love ftp), so I never saw this problem. And, yes, I would rather try to click on the foldername, and never on the small icon at the left of the name ! Nice uncoftable design, and nice warkaround, thanks Vyoma!

Not at all a problem doudou, I am glad I could be of help.

I came to know the ins and outs of cPanel as I had to use it from all kinds of obscure networks where I do not have FTP access. So, I can now use the File Manager of the cPanel quite well, but yet, it is not a 'walk in the park'.

Yeah, my first host that used Cpanel was quite different... it also took me a while to figure out how to use the File Manager... I wish they would re-design it... it is sorta confusing.

Same here. I was quite confused when I first used cPanel. I kept on clicking on the folders and noticing that it never went into the folder but just showed some folder settings in a frame to the right of it. Then, out of some accident, I clicked on a folder icon and realized that that was the pathway to the inside of the folder. smile.gif They should probably have instructions that say, "Click on the folder icon to access the folder" or something. Much easier that way.

if you use a mac there are no FTP features but you can download firefox and there's an add on called FireFTP which is really cool and it's a really good proper FTP system. It's also really easy to use which is a massive advantage.
