1. What is D5 and D9 ?

DVD-5 (Single Side Single Layer)
D5 holds around 4 700 000 000 bytes and that is 4.37 computer GB where 1 kbyte is 1024 bytes*. DVD+R/DVD+RW and DVD-R/DVD-RW support this format. This is the most common DVD Media, often called 4.7 GB Media.

DVD-9 (Single Side Dual Layer)
D9 holds around 8 540 000 000 bytes and that is 7.95 computer GB. DVD+R support this format. This media is called DVD+R9, DVD+R DL or 8.5 GB Media. A DVD-9 (dual layer) disc and hold 240 minutes of continuous video.

2. Why to Compress DVD9 to DVD5?

From above we can know the most important difference between DVD9 and DVD5 is capacity, the capacity of DVD9 is twice as DVD5, and many wonderful DVD movies are DVD9 format. But now why we need to compress DVD9 movies to DVD5?

First, DVD5 is cheaper than DVD9. If you want to make more copies(It's limitted to no-commerical use) of your favorite DVD movies, you'd better choose DVD5 disc to backup, it will save a lot of money.

Second, also another important thing: D5 is reusable and environmentally friendly disc.
You can see the disc you bought, which always display DVD-RW, DVD-R, etc. on their covers. A DVD-R is a write-once format, once you've burned the data onto that DVD platter, the disk is forever frozen with that information. Add the "W" to that, and you'll find that DVD-RW can be erased or rewritten up to a thousand times. In a similar way, the DVD+RW is defined as "DVD ReWritable" and DVD+R is defined as "DVD Recordable".

The DVD-RW and DVD+RW we always see at the market are DVD5 disc, it means that if you want to rewrite your DVD disc, you should choose DVD5 disc to backup your DVD Movies and data, you can reuse your DVD5 disc to backup different movies or data, such as write, erase, write, erase, again and again. Now the problem is if you own the DVD9 movies, how to compress a 7.9G DVD9 movies to a 4.3G capacity DVD5 disc? Do not worry, you can try the professional DVD Copy program, it supports to Copy, Compress and Burn DVD9 to DVD5 with high quality!

3. How to Copy and Compress DVD9 Movies to DVD5 Disc?

Follow the step-by-step guide on how to compress DVD9 movies to DVD5 disc on Mac.

Step1. Launch the professional Mac DVD Copy program, which can fast copy and compress DVD9 Movies to DVD5 without losing quality.
You can free download it from the link here: http://www.imediacreator.com/mac-dvd-copy-pro.html

Step2. Insert your DVD-9 Movies Disc.

Step3. Select the Option "D9 to D5 Compression".

Then, there are also 4 types of mode to output your movies: DVD Disc, DVD Folder, ISO, and DVD Media. Here you need to choose "DVD Disc".

Step 4. Start Copying DVD9 Movies to DVD5 Disc.

It will take you about 70 --- 80 minutes to finish the whole backup, compression and burning process, (the time needed depends on your DVD movie file size.)

Now you can wait and watch your DVD on your home dvd player after burning finish.

If you want to make more copies of your favorite DVD movies, you'd better choose DVD5 disc to backup, it will save a lot of money.

Please remember that, on behalf of intellectual property laws, it his forbidden to made several copies of your favourite disk.
The reason is simple : a given movie is like a book, it should not be watched by two persons in two different places at the same time.
Please note that, in most of countries, going against these law can lead you to very disagreeable situations, including jail.
The only thing the law allows you, because you paid a lot of money for your DVD and you could damage it if you put some marmalade on it during your breakfast, is a security backup.
The security backup has to be performed the following way.
You take your original DVD, you create a backup.
After that, you put your backup in a safe (for instance in your bank) where nothing bad can occur.
And you watch your favorite movie by means of reading your single copy.
If your single copy dies (after looking at your movie two thousand times or after a confusion between your dog's Frisbee and your move DVD) you take your original movie DVD out of it's safe and you create a new single copy.
That is what you are supposed to know, and no judge will accept that you did not know that.
Knowing that, the only reason why I don't remove your tutorial due to our forum TOS, is that we could imagine that your burner is unable to to burn a DVD9 DVD. In that case it is not against the law to compress your DVD9 movie to a DVD5 disk.
However, if a policeman enters your house and sees that your burner is a DVD9 one and you have blank DVD9's available, this reason doing that will not be acceptable.

Come on Yordan! There are many problems for Police to worry and bother about, why will they just waste time for silly things like who is burning additional dvdīs, who is compressing them. The probability is almost 0 (Unless someone who compliant police). Thatīs too silly, to be included in TOS too.

It's a vary serious problem in lot of countries. Around here, when the cops happen to stop a car, they are looking for forbidden things, and blank disks or burned disks are amongst these things.
And a forum site TOS is something important because some websites have closed because they were not compliant with local laws or even foreign laws.

Hmm... that's strict... very strict. Here we just burn as many disks as we want, the laws here in my country are very old. By the way, are you from Europe? (Don't think otherwise, asking you casually)

In india, you can burn as many disk as you want. Also due to population and the cops allotted in given region ratio is very unbalanced. Because of this hardly any case of catching people doing piracy. Also, police very rarely knows personally about people in particular region. For example, if anyone migrated from one state to another. But this is not the case in US/Europe/Canada. Sheriff and other cops knows about people in their town and people migrated to particular region allotted to them. So if by some chance they stop-by and visit particular person and check their home. Then chances are that they'll catch people who are burning dvd's. This is not the case in India, hardly any cop is technically competent enough to catch people doing this. Also even if they're competent or suspicious about some person they'll catch people with legal dvd's and cd's and will lock them out for no reason. Yeah, so play safe no matter in which place you're in the world.

Exactly. First of all we recommend you to play safely, or at least be fully aware of the risks. Some friends of mine had problems because they were thinking "If it's possible, then it's legal". No, sometime forbidden things are easy and possible, but they remain forbidden.
Secondly, astahost is an international site, with worldwide technical teaching ambitions. Probably most of you even don't know where our servers are located. So, our TOS claim that we only intend to teach fully legal tips. People wanting to learn or to teach illegal things are kindly asked to look somewhere else.

I agree. Topics like HD/Blue-ray protection breaking, IPB & VB null scripts, Warez are more of trouble to forums. Because of such topics more SPAM is attracted to forum. And if one such topic is allowed then new members are likely to create new topic/threads based on such illegal findings. They'll even ask for keeping topic/thread cause of their country don't catch or have no problem with such stuff. But for international forum or any internet sites faces problem because of posting such topics. Problem comes when advertisers remove forums from their service cause of discussing such topics. Agree with you on last part, if they meant to share warez/illegal stuff better find some other forum.

Thatīs right. Already there are many DRM breaking tutorials flying around here. Such methods of cracking and hacking tutorials have to be stopped/deleted, because they encourage new members to follow that way, as starscream said. Keep this forum clean and fill it with good and useful stuff guys. Astahost means a lot to all of us.

I would say that your experience means that, with the movie you have at one side, the burner you have and the player you have at the other side, the safest solution would be to make a 1-to-1 copy for your non-commercial move, seems to be the only way of having it working on any player.
