i download image files every now and then, usually large files 700MB+... now i want to download LinuxMint Debian (~1GB) and i know the best way is to download the torrent but my Modem usually freezes when torrent load gets heavy... so i usually download my images just via web browser (http)... a few times i had to download images twice or so as errors sometimes creep in to ruin the long process of downloading such large files.. so i'm wondering if i can get pointers on an easy to use download manager

You want the download manager for Linux or for Windows? Or maybe for other operating system?

I recommend the use of the plugin DownThemAll if you use the Mozilla Firefox browser. It supports parallel downloading as well as many other features that traditional download managers do. I find that it works quite well for downloading files from HTTP/FTP sites.

I have been using Internet Download Accelerator on my Windows machine for quite a long time and I am just about satisfied with it. There are a few glitches but none too serious. The best part is that it is completely free and you get premium like features without explosive advertisement (like in DAP free version). It can manage multiple connections and the download speeds are generally very good. The categorization of downloaded files is done automatically and pretty handsomly, though at times you may end up searching for your files within a few folders.

The overall experience is pretty awesome and suggest you to give it a try.

How does it behave in case of Ethernet connexion loss? Does it resume whe network is back, or when program restarts? Or does it restart from scratch, like standard IE downloads?

For normal http downloads, in case of connection loss or any other problem, it starts the download from the point where it was halted. In other words, it resumes the download. But it should be kept in mind that certain services like mediafire, hotfiles etc don't allow the file download to be resumed if the connection is broken. In such cases, it cannot resume the download and you will have to start from scratch.
