Microsoft has been trying hard to regain its position as the pioneer of mailing services, for that it has to compete with Google's mail giant Gmail, which possibly has the highest number of users across the world.
Microsoft, probably has spent time studying the factors which pull more people using mail towards the services of Gmail. It has ultimately taken its stand after its research is done. The veteran service of Hotmail has been ripped off and replaced by the company's latest presentation Outlook.com . The new mailing reportedly resembles the features of Gmail , like a user friendly interface , but unlike Gmail, which only provides preset integration to its home company's social site Google+, Outlook.com comes with the integration of other sites which witness heavier activity such as Facebook and Twitter and no ads would be displayed to users after identifying keywords that are used the most by the users, delivering a blow to Gmail's policy of showing ads.
The step directly points to the competition of the tech giants again, the similarities of Outlook.com and Gmail and the former going one step further with some updated features. Actually, Hotmail could be considered as one of the founders in mailing services, it started in the mid 90's and then when it was about to complete a decade's time, Google came up with Gmail and undoubtedly with features like Hangouts, it by far passed the attainment of people's preference.
Microsoft's Outlook.com has some great features to look out for like
Its cloud friendliness lets you remain in touch with your email irrespective of the device you use or the location you are in.With the feature of SkyDrive in it you can attach documents and images of any length.
It promises that the number of messages in your inbox would be more visible , about 30% more than the other mailing services.However, the interface has resemblance to that of Gmail, as mentioned earlier.
The integration of social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Skype etc. gives it a clear edge over Gmail.
The service offers free office Apps like Word, PowerPoint, OneNote etc. to transform it into a corporate service.

My first eva email account was with Hotmail... back then everyone uses msn for chatting so all my friends had hotmail account to use with msn... now msn can be used with any email account, but unfortunately there's a lot of other messenger tools available now... and also when Gmail first came out like 10 years ago they were only invites only because they started with the 1GB email space and increasing
now i've been using Gmail for that long i don't think i would ever use hotmail again...

The reason for the whole effort to come up with a new design altogether is to regain the lost users and to reinstall the faith in the users, they were after all the pioneers in mailing service. I think there is no harm in trying the new service as even Gmail was new sometime and though the registration wasn't that simple, everyone gave it a try. So, with such a renowned name like Microsoft creating a new design with integration of social media, the service deserves a shot, at least that is what I think.

Do you remember, some years ago, people did not ask "do you have internet?" or "do you have an email?"
Pople asked "do you have hotmail?"
People bought an internet connection only in order to read their mails, and "hotmail" was the first provider they were thinking about.

quite true... hotmail was a standard emailing service that most people would use... i remember when "what is your msn?" was the question thrown around between people

Yes, even today there are people that I know who simply pay charges for an internet connection simply to go through their mails, I know that from an uncle of mine who probably maintains that internet and a mailing service is identical, funny isn't it. Moreover, he doesn't seem to have any sort of interest in any other thing that the internet offers and hardly tries to listen to me when I try explaining to him. This makes me realise how important the mailing service would have been back in those days.

Back in those days, yeah, but still today! How many mails or SMS do you receive every day? Mail is so naturally part of your daily life, that we don't realize any more how important it is. It's a strong way for being linked to the external world. I have seen people sending mails from their smartphones, simply asking "where are you?"/"I arrived, I'm just at the corner of the street, I can see your car". Simply imagine how you would feel if you spend a couple of weeks without mail access!

yip... email, sms, social networking... imagine if suddenly facebook pulls the plug? that wouldn't be so cool... quite a lot of people have included facebook and social networking as part of their daily lives just like email and all other messaging services

Indeed, many of us also criticize that the internet has taken over or made us forget the traditional ways of socialising, yet there are so many of us that can't even imagine that we won't be able to connect to Facebook, like the internet has become an important part of our lives, being a part of the community over the internet has attained almost equal importance.

outlook.com then what? is Microsoft really struggling with its online mail services? years back hotmail was the shizzy (and msn) and then live came along and now outlook, either they are struggling or they are just expanding their service for too many customers or spams?

I think Microsoft is trying out new ideas and tech to see what people like and need. I also think that they are getting ready to push towards rolling out their internet based apps to replace their Office suite and Windows OS. I remember awhile back a rumor that Microsoft was getting ready to offer their Office suite as a internet app suite and this could be their first real push towards that, or a revisioned version of that same idea.
There is a huge potiental for success, and failure, for microsoft with this new service.

yip moving to the web and cloud seems logical, there's a green future on web and cloud - google's already got their own going (have been for few years now) with their google docs

I agree, there is a huge future in cloud based apps. However I'm not sure that I'm completely onboard with the whole idea. After all I'm and old school computer geek, and I like having my own copy of the software I'm using on storage media and everything I'm doing on my local computer. Having to access and run my productivity software from a web server somewhere kinda rubs me the wrong way. I know its the future, I know I'm going to eventually have to get used to it, but I see lots of security issues that will have to be addressed and are being addressed.
The good thing for something like this is the possibility of the apps being able to be used on a charge by use basis for people that don't need or can't afford to purchase it as a program for home use. It also will allow for use on tablets and such as they won't have to have huge data storage needs as they can use them as a web based app.

i believe there will be a time when networking speed will be fast enough that we will go back to the dumb-terminals
we live with it everyday but it isn't powerful and effective enough yet, thats when all we need is a screen while processing is all done on the server!
imagine have to watch a movie played from a server somewhere but only fed the display to your screen... and this will be a tablet like device but only as light as a piece of paper
cloud is still young, with time it will rule the world lol that is until some genius (or company but not apple lol) will come up with something much more awesome
