Port number is not required. Your IRC client will automatically find the next free port in the range (6667-7002) and log on.. You don't really need to specify any on your own.
well if you are using some linux/unix versions, and you are using irc application included with them, you will probably need a some sort of script so you dont need to type everytime irc server name and port number... that was loong time ago, when I used to like IRC, and consume it very much... Anyway if I remeber correct you will need to change your shell to tcshrc, (cos it's the simplest and best shell) on unix/linux) then you will need to get some .tcshrc shell script that has some predefinied functions like 'cd..' instead of 'cd ..' and all other bunch of stuff... and finaly you will need an script for irc, so your IRC-ing would be less painfull, as I remeber, one of the best scripts for linux/unix was Schlong. You may try to google-out all that junk that I told you now, but don't be angry if you don't find them, many of stuff has changed since I went to IRC.
anyway, this is usless info if you are just wondering which are irc servers port numbers, and you are using PC with windows.

These are the commands you need to type into your irc client:
/server irc.dalnet.com
/join #channelname
Replace channelname with the channel you wish to join!
Want to leave a channel?
/part #channelname
Hope this helps, any questions PM me im an old hat when it comes with IRC.
