Starting this new topic here until a better place can be found.

This is in reference to
Mambo Open Source Content Management System.

OpaQue has suggested that he would like to make some changes to the way that the Xisto websites work. These aren't hosting changes or anything that will affect the overall concept of the posting for hosting system.

As I gather, he is interested in pulling all of the various domains together into a more easily managed website. Basically, every change to the AstaHost forum needs to be made to the Trap17 forum as well. This doubles the effort needed to make changes. Finding a way to merge the two scripts or even forums would make it easier to manage both forums.

Other benefits as I see them:

  • Better control over users that attempt to cheat the system.
  • Larger repository of tutorials.
  • Better organization of certain topics.
We'll need for OpaQue to better explain his ideas before we can really get into the How To but he is interested in using Mambo to tie things together.

End or Recap.

QUOTE (OpaQue)

What I wanted to do is, organise the Classic tutorials and posts in a good fashion where they will always be easily accessible. I am still confused, but once I get time, I will think over it.

The next thing is, I was thinking about combining the forums. Currently every change I make to any forum needs to be changed on the other site. Maintaining is also difficult. I was thinking of making a CHANELLED forum. Where, the main forum index will contain 3-4 Categories i.e. Trap17, Astahost, Antilost etc. Then members can go into any of these categories. Basically.. I just wanted to integrate all the sites and their information under one name. However, this is just a thought and I would very much like to know your opinion. This system has its advantages and disadvantages.

But my main priority is, Getting the good information and discussions asidee so that they get the proper attention that they deserve. Then I had a thought about setting up an ADspace thing so that members dont use IMAGE servers for posting images. Which is not soo reliable.

I think we make a seperate topic and discuss about things that need to be changed here :-)

I think that the idea has promising results but there will be some things to consider.

  • Merging all of the websites will effectively reduce the overall web exposure by 200% to 300%.
  • There may be some serious user issues when combining forums.
  • A server error will shut down the entire site instead of just Trap17 or AstaHost.
Like I said before, Mambo is really nice to use but the invision4mambo bridge is very very thin and would need several new modules to be created to really get it working well. Invision does have a CMS that would work right out of the box and considering the level of quality that Invision usually releases, I'm sure the CMS is quite nice but more than likely beyond the budget.

IPB modules for Mambo would be too difficult to create with the help of the IPB SDK script. Basically the SDK is a bridging script that will allow IPB functions and classes to be called easily from new scripts. I am working with something similar for Mambo SMF to move all of the menu buttons from SMF to Mambo for a complete integration.

The biggest hurdle to jump with the invision4mambo bridge is that there will need to be a new search bot written for Mambo to search IPB. There are many search bots already written for Mambo to be used as a template but I'm not the man for that job. Writting a search bot for IPB to search Mambo on the otherhand may not be required but if it is wanted might prove quite difficult.

Okay, enough with the negative.
Now for the positive.

A good CMS like Mambo would really create a nice cover for a classic novel. Having things organized with a CMS would make it easier to explain the posting for hosting system to new users. With a CMS, we could more easily guide new users through the process before they get to the forum.

I really like the idea of having a most useful or classic tutorials section in the CMS.
Writting a few Mambo bots would drop content from the forum into the CMS if we used Mambo. Then we could display the most recent posts etc.

There are many options that a CMS would provide that haven't really been considered yet.

We'll need more input on suggestions for integration as well as how to implement changes.

Happy Integration, :D
