Those who want to avoid the extensive process of setting up a shoutbox on your own web-site (messing around with a whole bunch of PHP Code and MySQL Databases in the process) - can grab one for FREE rightaway from YellBox.
I found out about their site a couple of hours back - and it's looks real good. Check out:

I have to suggest Shoutmix. It is probably the best you will find on the internet. I think registration is still available, but you can read the news as to what has happened there. they have over 20,000 users in under a year i think. the service is fantastic i have heard, i haven't used it as i always make my own.I tried Shoutmix one time. It was not that bad, but I find that it loads slowly. The feature I like from it is that you can "moderate" directly. You don't need to go on the site, log in like myshoutbox.com
I use myshoutbox.com which is not bad at all.
Interesting I might give it a try when I free up some space on my site....
This is Snecx from ShoutMix. Thanks to Overture for the information. Yes ShoutMix was previously slow because it was on a shared server and the user base grew very large, larger than expected.
Until a point where it is too large for the small server, I have no choice but to go for a better server. It is expensive and I had to switch the site to provide free & paid service to keep the existing users and also to support the site in the coming days.
The site is now on a dedicated server as said by Overture and it is definitely much faster and more reliable. It is running fine since the move and it'll be able to support approximately 20x of the amount of users now (which is quite a number to achieve!).
I'm always available to provide support for my users. I hope this post will clear some confusion about the reliability of ShoutMix.
Best Regards,
Snecx

I used to use one of those shout service for a short time and realised it's hard to upgrade those shouts into new system.
There are a lot of free tutorial out there helping you create one. I found that most of them written in PHP and may or may not use a backend database like MySQL. You could have a look at my tutorial of making a shout box with text file as your database. Then what, your shout box will be database independent. All you have to worry about when seeking for a hosting service is whether they support php or not. I'm prettty sure that 90% currently hosting service support php.
Anyway, this is just my idea which may not be 100% agreed by people who are not very good at web programming stuff. Thanks to those free services. I used to use them when I were a noob (at shoutbox stuff). So, a nice shoutbox with the least of effort, it's worth to have a go. Maybe you will learn something from them and create your own unique one in a near future.
Good luck
With ShoutMix you can setup an archive script with PHP (script provided) and this is intergrated with ShoutMix. Once it is setup properly, each post made to the shoutbox will also be sent to the archive script and that way the owner can keep a copy of all the shouts, given that the owner has his own webspace with PHP support.
Initially ShoutMix also started as a shoutbox that doesn't use IFRAME, it is supposed to be XHTML 1.0 Strict compliant. There is an option that uses the shoutbox as inline element (h3, p, span, etc.). However, the IFRAME method is there since majority of bloggers wanted that.
I must say it is best to get a system on your own server that embeds to your page but making a shoutbox might not be an easy task for everyone especially those who just make static HTML pages or bloggers who don't own their own server space.
Free hosted service is still a good solution for some of the people out there.
Good luck too, to everyone.
