Hi all,
First of all thanks to szupie for the idea. We've a new irc channel for this board on Dal.Net - try joining any of the dalnet servers (irc.dal.net) and join the channel #AstaHost - it's up for a test run and we've had quite a few of the mods already visiting the place. Let's give it a shot for a few days and see if we can use this to help out in the Hosting Support Program... plus it'll act as a much faster alternative for the shoutbox. Flip side is, if this works out well, the shoutbox here will almost die out.. Let me know your opinions/views.

This sounds like it could be a nice idea but I have a question: What is an "irc channel"? Please forgive my ignorance but I'm not familiar with the concept of "irc". I get the impression that it's some sort of instant messenger or chatroom. Just a reminder: When introducing new ideas/concepts, please don't assume that everyone is familiar with all technical terms and abbreviations.

I'm eager to learn about this new "irc" thing and give it a test drive. So I pasted irc.dal.net into my browser but it timed out. Am I doing something wrong?

All right no probs :D First grab an IRC Client: mIRC (www.mirc.com) is the best, according to me.. Once you have that, start it and type /server irc.dal.net and you'll connect to the desired server. Next you've to type: /join #AstaHost and you'll be placed in that channel.

OPaque suggested we create a channel called Xisto and get all members from AstaHost, Trap17 and ComputingHost to come together there... All three channels and existent now. Feel free to join any of them. Joining is done by: /join #channelname.

Hey, I did it! Thanks m^e! Another new toy--I mean tool to work with! I'll have to spend some time learning the features. I hope it offers audio, video and free donuts!

You guys are really getting intense here. I stay away from irc because it’s addictive and you burn up a lot of time, especially in the warez department. The kind of devotion I see here you guys all deserve a medal. I have too much responsibility to devote this kind of time.

Good luck with the project it’s a good one.

"Warez"--now there's another concept I'm not real familiar with. All I know about that, is that it is some kind of illegal/unethical software.

Agree with Rudy - irc burns your up completely.. it's the most addictive chat among all... but lets behave like grown ups (lol) and try to limit ourselves to the real purpose of this channel.. lol.. yeah, I can clearly see how far we're going to go :D

So, can I logon with a "logging bot" :D unless someone is going to post excerpts and logs here for me to read :D

I have opened up for IM but I don't think I can put a mIrc client on my work computer ;)

I used to go on mIrc about 13 years ago and I stopped after all the exploits there got to be to many to keep track of.

We can also have meetings take place on IRC, as it is easier to do so in a chatroom style... chatting... protocol... That is, IF we would have meetings... but if we do, it'd be great to do so with IRC.

Oh i got stats working now also so look at them :( :)

Hey, Can I get ops in the channel??

It is kind of lonely there right now..... :)

What I would also like to see is a mod/admin there 24/7, not the same person, but someone that could answer questions about the site, get reported posts, and the like, so that there is always a Astahost face in there for people to chat with, I could make time to fill the night shift.....

First of all, I don't mind IRC. Well to some extent I do, since I've had loads of issues with it. But my question is.. will it not take the attention away from the boards? I mean, most people who post an issue here want a fast response, knowing that IRC is chat, which is usually faster than forums, will that not make them go to IRC faster instead of posting it here? Which then could lead to us answering the exact same questions all the time... I hope I am making myself clear in this.. I don't want to say I don't like the idea, but maybe only for mods? Or something?

I clearly see the advantages for mods and admins, but my fear is that members will use the IRC channels more than the forums in the end simply to get "help" faster. And that is something I want to avoid.

Don't worry about the channel taking away the attention from the board. I thought so too at first. But if you take a second look - it's not quite possible to make large reply posts such as here on irc. That place is for some quick help regarding hosting & other issues - or answers to some short questions regarding this board. On IRC you can't:

1. Post good tutorials
2. Explain a big setup/installation/problem fixing process step by step
3. All the rest of cool stuff that we do at this forum and the way we share our ideas.
4. Get web-hosting ;) (lol) - you can't do that on IRC for sure. Now we come upon the biggest motivating factor (for most) to keep posting here. No Posts, No Host ;)
5. Think of some really convincing reasons on your own and add them in here .... :)

Other than that +factors:
1. This represents stream of conciousness which is important for building a strong community where everyone knows each other
2. We could provide help much faster if we were using live chat :(
3. For unix lovers - IRC's one of the best mediums to get started on unix and know a whole lot about it. Also great place to learn scripting in the various scripting languages that *NIX offers.

Ok, you convinced me :( So it's ok. I just had to bring that up huh? LOL. Anyhow, can I get ops too LOL. It's kind of odd to be "normal" there while even just Hosted have Voice and I don't :)

I don't know what seems to be wrong... it is irc.dal.net::6667 right?

Does your ISP block certain ports?

   Mon Apr 4, 2005    Reply

Yeah, szupie's right, it would be a much easier format for meetings, but, well I'm not staff :P, but that would obviously only apply if you had meetings.

Jipman and Dooga, if you're still having trouble, try using a different port, like, I dunno :6668?

try to disable any firewall .. if that dosent help, check if ur IPS blocks some ports as Trekkie said. If everything else fails, err .. i think you could use a proxy bypasser and get through, a little illegal i know, but if nothing works thats ur last resort.

cheers

IRC ports range from 6667 - 7002. So try any of them if you can't connect to one. Also try out the various DALNet servers that there are. You'll get the whole list precompiled in mIRC.

ok well, most of the people that come on astahost dont see "IRC" unless its on a post. I myself didnt see it till 2 days later after joining in. If we need people to join us there, we need a visible link to IRC on the website. almost 30% users are the beginners in computers so what link you give them they click there. rest 40% are the daily web surfers, time is imporatant to them. and the rest 30% are like me :D always on asta or on the net doing something or the other because of the holidays.

It would be nice if you did something about IRC because apart from posting, I guess there should be some means of communication and fun between members. May it be just chat or games on IRC, either ways it helps keep people glued on.

Cheers .. :D

This is really cool Irc chat on the website. I only hope it works at my school cause the real irc like mirc gets blocked. I tried some webchats also but my school has really strict network rules :S
