I just had a discussion with opaque and it seems there are lots of so-called "Tutorials" which consist of just 3-4 lines of text summarizing some well-known windows settings tweaks - now these can hardly be considered as tutorials. We're planning on setting a minimum word limit for posts to qualify as a tutorial - initial suggestion is 500 words. Most of our good tutorials are way above that word limit - so we won't have problems accomodating them. What do you guys have to say about this - any other suggestions ?

In case this goes into action here's a page where you can find hundreds of cool freeware Word-Count utilities to assist you in this job..

Awaiting your quick response.. :D

500 words is moderate, I think. But I'm guessing there should be exceptions allowed, because sometimes a tutorial might not need that much explaination, especially if they use pics to show how to do something.

So that brings up the question... if a picture is worth 1000 words... would that qualify for a very good tutorial? :D

LOL...We can modify that word count a little making it so that a picture can be worth more or less then 1000 words :D :D

Good idea though......But what would be the minimum letter count for each word.? 4letters? cuz thats atleast 2500 characters :P

Now those would make for good tutorials.

Heh, there's another saying that says one word is worth a thousand gold. That would make one picture 1000x1000=1,000,000 golds!!!

At first I thought 500 was a lot, but when I went to my tutorial (1516 words) and word counted my longest paragraph with word, I found that it was 332 words, so I think 500 would be a decent amount. Nice idea, but maybe you should add something like "500 words is easy, you'll know once you tried it!" so that new tutorial makers will not panic and decide not to write them.

I don't see 500 words as a "hard task", of course it depends on what you want to write a tutorial about :D So trying to set a standard for tutorial this way would be a good thing. I mean, as m^e said, there are indeed a lot of tutiorals that are not quite tutorials.

Maybe splitting up the HOW TO's and TUTORIALs would be handy. Since a how to can be very much shorter than a tutorial. I am just throwing with some ideas here LOL
