Okay, here is what confused me...

Now, am I so bad at math that I didn't realize that -1 + -1 = 2, or is my rep thing wrong???

It's not a problem, you read the Pipe symbol... First number is your score

Reputation :: Member Ryan: 0 [ + | -0 | 2 total votes ] if you see he's got one positive and one negative

Example is Ryan
