I think it shows a lot of maturity that the post in the first link didn't ignite another negative reputation war.

I think posts like this are very good and it helps raise peoples awareness when it comes to alternate OS's and even show that there are other views out there.

If a post like this turns into a "Reputation War" we should remind people that we are for free speach as long as it does not involve illegal sites or activity...

Be careful so you don't get busted with php in school.

Any opinions on this? is it a controversy or is it healthy?

The difference is tone, for one. The first link isn't as aggressive. The second link is trying, hard, to piss people off, complaining of the whining and such, not to mention saying 'your other OS's are not good enough'. He is attacking the people who use that OS rather than technical issues inside the OS itself or the company that makes it(if that matters).

The first link instead gives more personal preferences for linux use without putting down others.

Thus, I would still mod the cryptonx post as flamebait, whereas I would ignore the other one.

Hmmm.....Well it seems more like he is not only trying to get attention but also a few good posts....Cuz long arguemnts like that get a lot of credits if you are active in it and it is easy to ramble on about any give thing and how much you hate it...Although I do agree with him in the sence that there are so many people that do bash windows on this site opposed to people who bash linux, directly or indirectly. Also I approved of his methods of straightforwardness but he should be more considerate when posting...It's like he's centering something out and being very harsh on the subject when he could have easily written it a lot nicer...Like the linux people may bash windows but they atleast back up there bashings...His post he doesn't even back it up...But then again I contredict myself because I do like the freedom of speech and such things...But he's using his freedom...Erm...how should I say it...Irresposibly? Cuz Some of his other posts also sound like that...But thats just my opinion.

Also Tree I think you might have espicialy deemed that thread as flamebait because he centered you out and said something along the lines of "im just trying to shut up frog?" dunno...I only read the first page....Way to tired right now...It's 1:36am n I still gotta do two projects. But yeah Umm..tree it sounds like you n cript might not get along well? Not sure...I'm tired...

I try as hard as possible to stay away from such topics and concentrate more on questions for help from users. It’s my nature to help people the reason for my twenty plus yeas as a Red Cross volunteer. I did not even look at any of those posts at all.

I used this as an example so we see what is going on and how easy it is for a topic or an opinion to get out of hand. I don't agree with the poster but I think it shows us that we have a healty community when we can overcome differences. I know that a lot of the users are not of english background and english may be a second or third language. I try to help when they seem to have an interest and they are trying hard to master both the language and the topic.

English is a second language to me, right now it's the only language I use and I can see where some people are struggeling to create a quality post. I was there at one time. still am in some cases....

I agree with all the reasons you gave on why they are different. Rudy, I'm like you when it comes to topics where there may not be a common ground and the only thing discussed are opinions. I concentrate on questions and helping. I love to post when I have something I can share or I just answer, comment on posts that interest me.

One little thing. Use the +1 reputation point when you see a user with quality posts, don't use the -1 one if they need to be warned, warn using the tools we have to set the warning level. The -1 reputation point is a way for us to see if members don't agree with the poster.
