Hey everyone.

Some of you may know that at conceptart.org, I maintained a digital sketch book that I updated once a week. Because of my busy class schedule, (which, unfortunately contained no digital painting in the curriculum) and the fact that my last server went down and took my site with it, I could not update as regularly as I'd have liked... In fact, I got so frustrated with disorganized classes that lacked focus; and professors who told me that there's no future in digital art or conceptual design (most of them believe that it's still the 1970s) that I spiraled into a pretty big rut. Now with my site back up and with it, the ability to share my work online where I can get feedback from people who know the field (Mostly at forums like Conceptart.org and cgtalk) I decided to give it another go.

Anyway, ranting aside, the process works like this; I make at least one finished and refined digital painting weekly to post here. The rule is that I post whether I like what I've done or not and since I hate publicly displaying work if it's glaringly not up to snuff (to me anyway), I'll have that little bit of added incentive to devote the time I need. Constructive criticism is strongly encouraged and would be appreciated. I’d certainly recommend that any artist here does the same with the medium that they’re devoted to. It’s a great process especially if you hold yourself accountable, and the idea of displaying what you’re working on really makes you push yourself. As one of the better teachers here said,“You can take expensive classes and buy good materials but ultimately you’re only as good as the time you put in”

Here's what I've completed from the beginning of my last run up to when my site and stamina went down.

Here's a of six digital self-portraits that I had been doing for a little while. They were all pianted from life with a mirror in fron of my computer... No cheating.

Now that this is up to speed, expect my first realtime installment on sunday evening. Again, I'd seriously recomend that anyone give this a try.
Thanks.

Wow, these are great! You are a very talented artist. Did you use your mouse to do those? How long does it take you to do each of them?

   Mon Feb 28, 2005    Reply

Thanks! Did I use a mouse? Heck no! I've seen a rare few who can pull that off. I don't figure it's worth the trouble. I use a wacom tablet and Corel Painter. Basically these allow me to utilize the computer the same way I would with a traditional medium. It's all hands on so-to-speak.

   Mon Feb 28, 2005    Reply

Yeah, I figured that anyone who can do this with a mouse wouldn't belong here... Hmm... Do you think a touch sensitive would be better or worse than a tablet in drawing? I mean, if you were able to put the screen on the table flat. (Although that was an subordinate clause, it still kinda makes sense...)

   Tue Mar 1, 2005    Reply

I'm not sure. I know Wacom makes a very pricey piece of hardware called the Cintique which is pretty much an LCD monitor that you draw on directly with the Wacom pen, but I don't know of anyone who is insists that it's a necessity... Let alone anyone who's rich enough to buy one. For the most part, the number one tablet is the Wacom Intuos which comes in a variety of sizes to fit your needs and budget. I think once you get the feel of it down and use it regularly enough, the fact that you're not making marks on an actual surface doesn't even really occur to you.

i like this. this is really good! i love this style of drawing on the computer. you must be very creative to be a concept artist. i remember they only used pens, pencils, and papers for the concepts.

now its a whole new step on the computer system. it makes the pictures a whole lot sharper and clearer.

anyways, GREAT WORK!!

Again; well done on the artwork. I really like the horse on your last picture. Was the Samuri (or however u spell it) inspired from the film The Last Samuri played by Tom Cruise? cos that is what i first thought of when i saw it.

My second favourite and probably my overall favourite is The Dunes (that is what i named it) one, with the very ickle man and the vast sand and hills (or whatever they are called when they are made out of sand :)) i love the perspective in that one. you can almost think what he is thinking (FU** me that is a SH*T load of sand! :().

Well done.

Keep 'em coming.

edit: if it is not a desert i apologise :) i haven't slept much --tired smiley here--

wow! dude you really have some really good talent... thats really good. i don't even know how to paint in real life.. painting in a pc is too much for me... i'll stick to programming and web designing ;-)

harriko: Thanks for the kind words. Actually, where I attend classes anyway, there's still a lot of controversy over digital mediums. There are a multitude of ways professors will try to discredit it too. "There's no evidence of your hand", "there's no one original piece that acts as a template for your prints" etc. It's kind of hard explaining to them that it's not like pushing a few magic buttons to get a solid piece or that when you use a Wacom tablet, there is evidence of your hand as you're using your own brush strokes and pressure.

overture: Thanks. Actually, I'm a big fan of samurai movies in general. Check out anything with directed by Akira Kurasawa or starring Toshiro Mifune.

wwheeler: Thanks. You ought to post some of your writing sometime.

amkint: Thanks. Actually painting on a computer isn't too different when you have the right tools. I love how with every passing year the line becomes more blurred.

great work, all of them. I especially like 'dune' and 'griffin'.
Is that griffin based on some kind of real animal or dinosaur, or did you make it up yourself? and i like your drawings, but how good can you draw portraits, really? i mean, maybe you look really different, and you suck at portraits :) (just kidding) but could you post a photo... :) thanks.

and just one thing, maybe you shouldn't post images hosted on your astahost account. if a lot of people look at this topic, you will lose quite some bandwith.... i'd go to an imagehost for that, at imagecave.com (http://www.imagecave.com/) you got 1,024.00 MB of bandwith every month, and that way you're sure your own site will stay online... just a suggestion :(

love the paintings, keep up the good work!

Thanks. The Griffin was done for a conceptart.org design challenge where the object was to redesign a mythological creature.

I've been meaning to put a picture of myself on my site for a while but I can never seem to remember to barrow my fathers digital camera whenever I go home.

Anyway, Here's my latest. It's kind of a metroid-inspired aquatic blob monster. That's the best title I can think of right now.

Very good , what progamme did u use?
I am always using painter and photoshop
I like the layer system in photoshtop and the brush in painter

   Tue Mar 8, 2005    Reply

Thanks. I use Corel Painter almost exclusively. I really only use photoshop for juxtaposition with layers and compressing my images for the web. Painter seems to be awfull at that for some reason.

well, I missed updating this week but that's because I'm working on something a bit larger in scale that will ultimately be part of an even bigger undertaking. It's an idea that I've had for quite some time but I've always had some sort of excuse to keep myself from starting it. In short, I'll be a little late but I have a good excuse. You'll have to take my word for it. :D

Thank you for posting those images but isn't it eating up your bandwidth like crazy?

@ndhill: i was wondering something what blender in Painter would be best for getting a good skin texture, nice and smooth. I cannot seem to get the right turn out for it, it usually blenders way to much or when i alter the settings it doesn't do it enough.

Or if possible do you know a good tutorial on the matter. I will keep trying, it is just a big change from Photoshop like i have mentioned before somewhere on here.

thanks

oh WOW, I just noticed this thread and your site. This stuff is amazing man, awesome work!

I also read through the tutorial on your site...great stuff. I don't know how you do it though, even with the pen thingy. All I have is a mouse, and I would die trying to do this stuff :D

Everything looks terrific, you should hook up with some game mods and be a concept artist or something. I can do digital art, but not so much along the lines of making my own stuff/drawing, but rather digitally coloring and creating using brushes or other images. (hence my site, unreal wallpapers)

once again, good work dude!

Cheers, and keep it up :D

spacewaste: Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. I have the upgraded hosting package which is about the same in terms of bandwidth as what I had with neopages (my previous freehost). I've been posting my stuff in every forum imaginable... My site traffic is usually so low that I can afford to, unfortunately. Thanks for the tip though. I'll be sure to hook up with them once things pick up. As long as I don't have to go back to photobucket...*cringe*

overture: I have a lot of blending brushes in my personal brush library which you can down load here. But I think just about any blender will do the job as far as texture is concerned. The secret of skin tones lies within the color and value, though. I think it's probably impossible to master. All I could really tell you is that a little bit of red highlight goes a long way. It's a very complicated subject that has stumped aspiring painters for millennia. As far as blenders are concerned in general though, go to your brush settings window and open up "well." The higher you set the bleed to resat ratio, the more smeary your brush is and vice versa.

Ignition: Thanks for the vote of confidence man. I've actually been involved with a few small projects, all of which sort of turned me off of mods. "Free projects" usually mean that everyone involved is busy making a living at something else, including me so they usually never see completion. I've also a variety of other things for free or at least for the prospect of seeing a commission but unfortunately, they never went anywhere either. My one piece of advice to anybody doing freelance work over the net is this; never work without a contract.

Anyway, here's my latest.

This is an illustration based on my all-time favorite novel, Frank Herbert's Dune.

Wow...that is beautiful. A sandworm?

That looks terrific.....I love the eyes and the gaping mouth. Awesome detail put into all the little ridges along the body....how do you do it man? :D

That's imply amazing. Good work...wish I had a digital pen to draw with.

Cheers! :D

I really like the bold strokes you use on your work. i always seem to end up blending them all the time lol i really wish i didn't. i guess i need to practice, practice, practice! but so busy with college programming work :( so dull.

anyways very nice work... again :)

overture: Thanks man. Actually I'm just a slob naturally. I just figured 'why fight it?' What are you studying? I'd say the road to any good painting starts with a foundation of in-class life drawing. I'd seriously recomend it to anyone. You can find brief sessions open to the public for a few hours at just about any school with an art program if you can't afford the class.

anyway, as the folks at conceptart.org always do, they helped me find some things that needed to be fixed. Mainly constrast and depth issues. That's probably always been my biggest week area. So here's the update. Enjoy. Contrsuctive critique is always welcome here so don't hesitate.

hey ndhill, that image looks better than the original :). i am studying Software Programming at college i am coming to the end of my 2nd year which will be the end of the course in about June or July.

I planned to go to Uni to study Graphic Design but i was not accepted due to some cock-up by some people, they didn't tell me something which was required for me to have a chance to get into Uni. :(

i am just practicing in my spare time at the moment with lighting in Painter.

   Fri Mar 25, 2005    Reply

Thanks. You'd be surprised by how many times I end up going back to redo something even after it's been on my site for months.

That sucks about uni. I know there are schools that I'd definitely love to attend but distance and cost prevent it. You can really accomplish a lot at any school though, if you really invest yourself. That's something I found out pretty quickly here at USM. No matter how bad the professor is, what you get out of the class is proportional to what you put in. My schools art program has no clue as to where to scratch the surface on digital painting so in that area, I'm 100% self-taught. It's the disciplines like traditional life-drawing, painting, color theory and 2-D design principles that really lend themselves to my work here, which I do separate from school.

Keep at it, man. That's really the only thing that works in the end.

thanks noel. i have been practicing all i can in my spare time at the moment being as it is coming to the end of the college year got a lot of work to finish. i have been sketching a lot on figure drawing 'cos i haven't actually focused on it that much before. it is going good, there are many(x infinity) techniques out there, when i am back at college i will probably checkout some books on figure drawing.

also at my college they have no idea about where to start with digital art either. they have digital slices in their courses but that is just 3D stuff. it's a shame.

overture.

Sounds good. We all have to start somewhere. If it's books you're interested in, check out anything by Andrew Loomis. He's got some of the best texts on the subject of figure drawing. They're not so much a substitute for life drawing classes as they are helpfull companions that help you interperet what you're seeing in front of you. That's the real key. Unless you're observing the figure from from life, you're pulling images of the figure from a mental stock. The goal is to get those mental images as close to the real thing as possible or else you'll simply just be arranging parts. The figure is such a complex thing that requires attention to countless aspects and relationships. The ways muscles connects and interact with eachother, the way flesh composes itself under different positions and different orientations with respect to gravity, skeletal mechanics, etc.

Speaking of life drawings, here are a few figure studies and gestures done in class.
