I would suggest three things.
1- get a spyware protector to stop spyware downloading itself. For this i would suggest either spybot (which i have and have found very usefull) or adaware which i have heard great things about.

2-get a popup blocker. I have never tried one and dont actually know whether it will work.

3-get a personal firewall. For this i strongly suggest Zone alarm, (You can either downlaod a free version or pay for one with a few more features). This firewall is very good although anoying sometimes with the amount of warnings.

I hope this helps you with your problem.

1) Get a pop-up blocker.
In Windows XP Service Pack 2, there is an integrated pop-up blocker with Internet Exploder. However you may not have SP2. In that case I highly recommend you download and get the Google Toolbar. It has a pop-up blocker built in.
2) Get a Spyware/Adware Removal utility.

Spybot search and destroy is the best i've seen
3) Get a firewall (to prevent your computer from being intruded by hackers)
Although SP1 and SP2 both have firewalls, getting a discrete firewall is a better solution.

Zone Alarm provides a good, free firewall. (Zone Alarm Basic)

I have one other suggestion to add. Now I'm not accusing anyone of this, but avoid porn and warez sites if you really don't want any nasty little bugs on your computer.

"Every popup starts a new virus."
From experience, if you're just casually surfing along, that's not the case... Unless you end up at a "high risk" sites (a la pr0n), where you're likely to find a lot of code trying to screw up your computer.

Surfing the net is analogous to sexual intercourse. Sure, you can use contraceptives (ie. firewall, antivirus, etc), but avoiding risky behavior altogether will reduce the risk of pregnancy (ie. spyware, virus, etc). In other words, it's still possible to get a trojan with a Trojan laughface.gif

Ok, bad joke... :)

OMG ROTFLMAO!!!!! :) Well said! lol gotta show that one to my friends :) hehehe...
Oh yes, and do be careful of what you see in AIM profiles. The infamous "I cant' believe I found such and such's picture here!" message. Its a trojan but the site claims its not a trojan. There's also a not removing removal tool on the website.

Stay away from suspicious sites!!!! especially ones that look corny! (like when you type a domain and a site pops up that says the domain is on sale)

agreed. or if you prefer not having an extra thing hanging around in your browser, try the mozilla firefox browser; it automatically blocks all popups.

i'd say get a good anti-virus program as well.

Anti-Virus won't help anything but block viruses from coming into your computer. But also Norton Internet Security has an integrated pop up blocker that works quite well.
Opera also has a popup blocker built in as well as the Mozilla web browser

I use new yahoo toolbar, it has spyware remover and pop up blocker.
http://toolbar.yahoo.com

It stops about 95% of popups and gives you chance to open the last few it has blocked, and lets you select sites that you wish to receive popups from.

Hope this helps a lil.

You probably need to turn off the messenger service. Go to control panels and services and find messenger and disable it. Note: this is not windows messenger IM.

A good popup blocker is Panicware.

Also, if you use Mozilla Firefox, there is a popup blocker included with the browser.

There are a lot of popup blockers out there- even MSN offers a little blocker that works, more or less. Personally, I use Safari, which has a popup blocker included- just one less thing to worry about ^__^

I recommend Ad-aware and Spybot for getting rid of the spyware/adware.

I also recommend the Sygate Personal Firewall

(All three are free.)

But the best thing you can do, is stop using Internet Explorer, and use Mozilla Firefox as your browser. They have no popups and no spyware/adware!
