For those of you who don't know, Panther, Apple's newest OS (Mac OS 10.4) is coming soon. Apple has said that it will be released in the first half of this year, so within 3 months. But some sources say that the release date may be announced this Friday (April Fools, so maybe it's just a joke?) and it will ship during April. I'm very excited about this new release. I've been waiting to get my new iBook until this latest OS comes out.

Is a Mac worth getting, seriously, I was thinking of it, they do look kinda nice, are they worth it though?

No body can realy tell you if a mac is worth getting, everyone has their own opinions.
I for example, would say that the Anti aliased desktop, and pretty zooming taskbar arnt important to me, and you would be better off using FreeBSD with your existing x86 PC. (or a bit more distant relative of the Mac / BSD.... Linux
)

I guess we all agree that it depends on what you are going to use it for.
For working, macs are more stable (no one can argue that).
And for games, downloads... etc pcs are better (more compatible).

but if its only Stability and securety you want, you should use FreeBSD. that way you can keep your computer (no need to buy mac hardware) and you can dual boot windows for your games / whatever.
Apart from that MacOSX taskbar, macOSX and FreeBSD are ery very similar, only FreeBSD runs on PPC and x86.

Those featres look really handy and well done.
I like that Apple doesn't just try to follow other systems and try to do their things better. That's no way to gain ground, but going into new innovations will.
I hope these new things will get more people in the Mac world. I'm not in it, but hey anything's better than Windoze.

Actually no its not, Windows is doing great for me, stable and running for about 4 days now (maybe not a lot) it hasnt slowed down and does what I ask it to, its a lot better than it used to be, I know linux/mac/bsd's are probably more stable but I wouldnt put windows down so much, it can if properly setup and used work like a charm.

Urm, don't want to sound picky, but the new OS is called TIGER. O-o. Panther is the CURRENT OS.

To be honest though, it's very hard to explain why exactly the mac is so appealing to some people. All I can really say is, please just try one out for like a month or so. Everyone loves their mac for different reasons, and sometimes I don't even know why I love my mac, but I know I do. So much more than all of my previous PCs.
My principle is always: Don't diss what you haven't tried. Not saying any of you have been complaining about macs in general, but Trekkie101, just try a mac out, if you're already that curious. I've had friends who are equal parts Linux and Mac lovers, one of them had a Sony Vaio before he got a Powerbook and ran all types of flavours of Linux on it (he told me about distrowatch), and when he switched over to the Mac, he still told me, yes, the mac is so much better. He now dual boots the Mac OS X and Linux on his powerbook.
Although... stable and running for 4 days is a good sign? O_o. I've had my Mac for a year now, and only now it's having some problems, and I think it's because I dropped it on the battery side and the battery is dying. Back when I had my PC, the two months mark was the furthest I could go before something cropped up and I had to clean up the computer. If Windows wasn't stable and running for 4 days, perhaps died on the third, I'd be very worried for Microsoft... O-o. I don't want to put windows down too much, I've lived and coped with it for what, ten eleven years of my life? But seriously, compared to windows, Macs are a haven to me.
On a not-so-related note, taking up my own advice of not dissing what I haven't tried, REALLY feel like kidnapping my brother's computer and installing linux on it.

Now, yes, you can use existing x86 hardware to run linux (which I am currently doing), but I'd much rather be running on PPC or SPARC...x86 will never be able to stand up to good ol' RISC...only thing it has going for it is that it's cheaper technology, but really, i feel that the x86 should have been retired ten years ago...along with Windows. Now back to the topic..
Yes, the new Mac OS X on its's way is Tiger. But, Even to this day, I have had yet to even touch or get within 100 feet of a computer running OS X. I've seen the screenshots and such, and I also noticed this supposed "NeXTSTEP-inspired interface" (although...that dock is in no way similar to NeXTSTEP whatsoever..), and honestly, I don't really see myself ever moving over to OS X. Maybe I would if they gave you the option to use the Classic interface...eye candy is okay UP TO A POINT. Now it's absolutely ridiculous! not to mention unnecessary...Anti-Aliasing...okay, I can deal with that. transparent windows? Sure that's okay.....but buttons that look like jello, and all these "effects" that actually slow stuff down...I hate it. Oh wow, when you open explorer, everything is animated in when a new folder is opened, but it takes more time. But hey, I guess some people consider blocks and sharp edges painful on the eyes...what do you want next? The icons to dance? Give me a break..None of these new features of graphical interfaces are actually doing anything useful.

I didn't mean that Windoze is total crap, it was before 2000 pro. I'm running 2000 pro in this system and it is really stable, it barely never crashes. Sure it does funny stuff now and then and gets a bit jammy at times but hey it wouldn't be windows if it didn't
. The sad thing for MS is that once they got a decent OS done, then they went for the wrong direction with XP. It's not the windows' instability problems that I'm basing it for, it's the unwise designs in it's architecture which on it's behalf has increased the security problems. Windows is kind of started to build from the wrong end; fancy walls and decorations before a good base.

So much more than all of my previous PCs.You do have to try it to really see if you like it. I don't know anyone who has actually used OS X and didn't like it. It's different. You have to give it a chance. But, yes, it is worth it, especially with the new Tiger features.

4 days?!?! Not so great. I am running an iBook G4 800Mhz:( with 384 RAM. Also Tiger 10.4.1. My uptime: 9 days, 19 hours and 40 minutes.
Try THAT on a Windows box.
