My friend's system crashed.
He brought his computer (without monitor) to me
and asked me to re-install Windows XP for him.

ok, that is a easy job.
Everything is fine. But I set the screen resolution as 1024*768.

He connected his old monitor to that computer after he got it back.
His old old monitor does not support 1024*768 screen resolution.

He said he cannot see anything other than a black screen.

I guide him to modify the setting in safe mode, but fail.
and he does have other monitor.

How can the screen resolution be modified to 188*600 in this situation???

err .. what do u mean ? .. as in does he have another monitor or he dosent ? .. well if he has one .. i assume its a better one that supports 1024x768 .. if not .. then i suggest he get the comp back to u .. and u can connect it to ur monitor and change the settings to 800x600 .. Well there isnt a hard reset as such .. not of which i know .. so this would be the best way i think ..

Well if thats the case then i told ya m8 .. get the pc back from him and fix the stuff on ur comp and let him go connect .. again if sumone does have another way to do this .. plz feel free to get more info ..

What kind of fail? In my opinion this absolutely HAS TO work! I cannot imagine what should go wrong here. If he changes the settings in safe mode, the changes should be kept for the next reboot!

Did he check the graphics adapter? I mean ist it still deep in it's AGP or PCI slot? If it's not, this would explain the black screen.

Of course it has to work.

Jedipi: Ask your friend to boot it up and tell him to keep pressing F8 repeatedly. He will come to the Windows startup options. Then select 'Safe mode'. What do you mean by it's not working? Do you mean to say, you can't even see the POST screen? If the monitor is showing a complete blank even before windows starts, as hazeshow said, it's not a problem with the resolution. Some more info about the computer will help.

Well, I'm not absolutely sure on what the problem is and where is it. First, these are my guesses:

1. Graphics driver
Old graphics drivers MAYBE cannot support high resolution settings. As well as old computers. I've never seen 'True Color' or '1024x768' on Windows 95. Hahahaha!!

2. Monitor
If you have a really old monitor, it's the time to buy a new one. I'm serious because it's worth your money! Why don't you try to find the cheapest but stylish LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor (flat ones, of course)? Maybe you can find one on Ebay or your closest computer hardware store.

Personally, I would rather buy another monitor and upgrade my graphics driver.

1. Get a GeForce 2 MX 440 - 64 megabytes of DDR RAM - enough to play games and stuff!
2. My 19'' LCD monitor from ProVision (I live in another country, note that) and I got it for about $250. Not a bad price!

You really have to visit South Korea sometimes. If you go to an IT mall, you can find the top quality and the newest hardware stuff for the lowest price! W00T!1!! o_O

There is no 188x600 mode...

Yes, there actually is True Colour and 1024x768 resolution in Windows 95.

Every single SVGA monitor I have ever come across, even ones from around 1987-88, have been able to support 1024x768 resolutions, and even 24-Bit colour. It may look a little fuzzy on some, but they can do it. I really doubt he has an EGA monitor...

I've got the same problem. The problem is that I can't save the resolution from safemode. Because the resolutiun can't be changed in safe mode!

I am having a vary similar problem. I can start up my computer and log in but I was an idiot and decided to change my resolution by clicking on the balloon in the bottom right and now my monitor shows everything just fine when I log in until just before the balloon shows up then it goes blank again.I have tried to change it before the balloon shows up but failed in my attempts. I also have tried to resolve the problem in safe mode but once I try to bring up the settings for the Video card it states it is not installed and that this message is here because it is not installed or I am in safe mode T-T

hey guys the easiest way to resolve high res and black screen issues is to do a system restore (xp,vista) if you are running an older version of windows, just go in safe mode, remove the monitor from device manager, windows will find the monitor as new hardware and set the res. Upon reboot.
